ES - accomplished litigator, diverse practice, law clerk to Judge Wilkinson, strong letter from Lee Rosenthal WBJ - Paul Hastings. Lee Rosenthal.
Resume a million pages long. TH - Best letters ever, and married to Bennett Boskey's niece
James A. Feldman, James A. Feldman, Attorney at Law, Washington, DC (Rating Avg. = 1.0)
ES - law clerk to Justice Brennan and Judge Skelly Wright, Assistant to SG, 45 Supreme Court arguments. Detailed and extraordinary letters, including
from Seth Waxman. Harvard Law Review President. Humbling. WBJ - Solo DC practice. Sex Waxman proposes. Brennan clerk. We should ask him if
he is willing to participate..
Catherine M Recker, Welsh & Recker, P.C., Philadelphia, PA (Rating Avg. = 1.2)
ES - Litigator who started her own firm. Strong and effective letters from Judge Lee Rosenthal, Judge Diane Wood, Judge Gene Pratter WBJ Rosenthal/Diane Wood. White collar defense. YGR - Lean to elect but 2nding letters are very brief
Jim Odell Stuckey, II, SCANA Corporation, Columbia, SC (Rating Avg. = 1.4)
ES - solid nominating letter from William Hubbard, very active and well respected in SC practice and bar activities. WBJ - Deputy GC Scana Corp.
William Hubbard proposes.
Heath P. Tarbert, Allen & Overy, Washington, DC (Rating Avg. = 1.0)
ES - "one of the five leading banking lawyers of his generation," law clerk to Justice Clarence Thomas and CJ Douglas Ginsburg, strong government
and private practice experience, including as associate counsel to the President, WBJ - Allen Overy firm. Catherine Struve seconds. Gigantic CV.
Banking law. "one of the five leading banking lawyers of his generation." Ginsburg/Thomas clerks. Seems like he could be outstanding.
To Be Discussed (9)
Turney Berry, Wyatt, Tarrant & Combs LLP, Louisville, KY (Rating Avg. = 1.2)
Yes - 10 ES - senior trusts and estates lawyer, solid recommendations from ULC work
WBJ - Partner KY law firm. Probably don't have many members from KY. Sitkoff/Stein. Uniform Law Commission. Trusts and Estates.
Kim - Sitkoff needs to better proof his letters - this is Turney not Spica. [FYI Rob saw typo and sent corrected letter, which is now
available in Membership Dept. upon request]
Discuss - 1 TH - I mark "discuss" because we have two similarly situated nominees in a narrow field - trusts and estates
Adam Raviv, WilmerHale, Washington, DC (Rating Avg. = 1.2)
Yes - 10 ES - Judge Stanley Markus law clerk Fulbright Scholar, strong letters of support from Anton Hajjar, Seth Waxman, and ICA project
reporter Catherine Rogers
WBJ - Wilmer Hale. Anton/ Seth Waxman. Arbitration and appeals.
Discuss - 1 TH - Good letters and a really fascinating person; great educational experiences and several high quality extracurriculars in addition to
day to day practice. I mark "discuss" only because Adam is not a partner, and we tend to view partnership as an important factor for
practitioners.
Craig R. Bucki, Phillips Lytle LLP, Buffalo, NY (Rating Avg. = 1.3)
Yes - 9 ES - solid academic and professional credentials, impressive and substantive local bar involvement, note that his father is my colleague
and friend
WBJ - Buffalo law firm.State and municipal government. Thorough recommending letter. 33 years old.
Discuss - 2 Ken - At 33, might be a little young?
YGR - Do we need more people from Buffalo? If so, then elect
Tom Alan Cunningham, Cunningham Darlow LLP, Houston, TX (Rating Avg. = 1.5)
Yes - 9 ES - state chair, American college of trial lawyers, extensive trial experience, very strong letters including from Mike McKetta
WBJ - McKetta/Keasler
Kim - Personally know; one of the best.
Discuss - 2 MS - Too many letters saying nothing
SB - Refer to RAG?
R. Stanton Dodge, Dish Network Corporation, Castle Pines Village, CO (Rating Avg. = 1.5)
Yes - 9 ES - GC DISH Network, state court of appeals law clerk, thoughtful supporting letters
WBJ - GC Dish Network, CO. We are light on GCs (I think) and he seems impressive.
WH - 2 letters from same firm.
Kim - Worthy candidate - should avoid two letters from the same firm for a client.
TH - Can our corporate counsel subcommittee take a look at this too, please?
Discuss - 2 YGR - Not very distinctive but maybe OK because it increases GC numbers
SB - Don't oppose but seems relatively weak candidate.
Richard O. Cunningham, Steptoe & Johnson LLP, Washington, DC (Rating Avg. = 1.3)
Yes - 8 ES - international trade lawyer, short but strong letters from Carolyn Lamm and Lee Cooper
WBJ - Steptoe law firm. Carolyn Lamm/ N. Lee Cooper. International trade.
Discuss - 3 MS - Will he get involved?
YGR - Why now
Kim - Why now; letters do not address. This is a 48- yr. lawyer.
James P. Spica, Dickinson Wright, Detroit, MI (Rating Avg. = 1.4)
Yes - 8 WBJ - Dickinson Wright Detroit. Sitkoff worked with him in connection with Uniform Law Commission Directed Trust Act.
Kim - Letters addressed my concerns.
Discuss - 3 ES - Solid but it seems that much of his support connects to his work on the Uniform Probate Code with the ULC. Helpful to get broader
view from RAG?
YGR - Comments/insights on MCG interactions?
TH - I mark "discuss" because we have two similarly situated nominees in a narrow field -- trusts and estates.
Christopher Edward Appel, Shook, Hardy & Bacon L.L.P., Washington, DC (Rating Avg. = 1.5)
Yes - 6 WBJ - Shook, Hardy. Victor Schwartz/Mike Green.
Discuss - 5 MS - Not a partner?
ES - solid in many ways but note that he is not a partner and query whether his tort law advocacy is client based?
YGR - Likely to be a good contributing member but only seems to be a protege of V. Schwartz. Plus we have 14 candidate of which only 2
are diverse
Kim - Brilliant lawyer, but this one is close for me. He is still an associate. His work and participation in ALI are great and Schwartz has
great credibility. However, is this one where we wait for him to become a partner, which should be soon if he is as great as they say. I am
ok in admitting him but this is right on the cusp.
TH - Not a partner. As a mentee of Victor Schwartz, he has been participating in ALI MCG and annual meetings for several years without
being a member; I'd like to discuss this as a group. Setting aside this ex officio ALI work, I would view this as a "wait for later" application.
John P. DiTomo, Morris, Nichols, Arsht & Tunnell LLP, Wilmington, DE (Rating Avg. = 1.8)
Yes - 6 WBJ - DE Morris, Nichols. Penn Law 2004. Letters are so so. He is young but accomplished I'd elect but would not mind deferring for a
year. He became partner in 2013.
Discuss - 5 MS - No notes for discussion.
ES - solid Delaware corporate litigator, law clerk to former Chancellor Chandler, short but strong letters from preeminent Delaware lawyers,
but just not sure if there is enough here? maybe one to check with RAG?
YGR - No notes for discussion.
TH - This relatively young DE corporate lawyer is not as strong as our other candidates, and the accompanying letters are relatively brief.
SB - Refer to RAG?
