Shaggy Days Class Descriptions
May 9, 2015 at 8:30 AM at the Fairgrounds North Arena
Presented by the Kootenai/Shoshone 4-H Youth Horse Council
Ride a Buck (provide your own dollar) – Riders enter the arena bareback and will place a $1 bill under their thigh as instructed. Then riders will
perform various movements at various gaits as instructed, without touching or readjusting the dollar bill. If a rider looses their dollar bill or is unable
to perform the task requested they will be disqualified and retire to the center of the arena. The participant who keeps their dollar bill the longest
wins.
Boot Rings – Riders will enter along the rail, riding bareback. Riders will have a twine ring placed on each boot. The objective is to keep the rings
on both feet as long as possible. Riders will be asked to perform various movements at various gaits as instructed, without touching or readjusting
the boot rings. If a rider looses both boot rings or is unable to perform the task requested they will be disqualified and retire to the center of the
arena. The rider who keeps one or both boot rings the longest wins.
Ribbon Race (partners) – Riders will enter as teams (horses may be under saddle or bareback). Riders will be given a length of toilet paper (the
ribbon). Each team member will hold one end of the ribbon, without physically touching themselves. The announcer will instruct riders to perform
various movements at various gaits. If a team breaks or drops their ribbon they will be disqualified and retire to the center of the arena. The team
who goes the longest without breaking their ribbon or losing it wins.
Simon Says – Riders will enter along the rail at a walk (under saddle or bareback). Once all riders are in the arena the announcer will begin asking
riders to perform specific gaits, execute certain movements, or touch the horse in a particular spot. Some commands will begin with “Simon Says”
and some will not. Riders are to follow the commands that begin with “Simon Says”. If riders do not follow a “Simon Says” command or follow a
command that does not begin with “Simon Say” they will be disqualified and retire to the center of the arena. The last rider remaining after all the
commands are given is the winner.
Thread Reins – Riders will enter along the rail at a walk (under saddle or bareback). Once all riders are in the arena they will be pick up their tread
rein (to be provided by the show staff), and lay their regular reins down (on horses neck or saddle horn). The objective is to keep the thread rein
intact as long as possible. Riders will be asked to perform various movements at various gaits as instructed. If a rider’s thread rein breaks or they
pick up their regular reins they will be disqualified and retire to the center of the arena. The rider who is able to ride with their thread reins longest
wins.
Trotting Race – Riders will line up at one end of the arena (under saddle or bareback). Upon the announcers command riders will begin trotting to
the opposite end of the arena. If a riders horse breaks out of a trot they will have to return to the starting line and begins again. The goal is to have
the fastest trot from one end of the arena to the other without breaking gait.
Red Light, Green Light – Riders will line up at one end of the arena (under saddle or bareback). Upon the announcers command (Green Light)
riders will move their horses at the designated gait towards the finish line. The announcer will randomly announce Red Light and riders will have 3
seconds to stop their horses. If a horse and rider break gait during a green light or fail to stop in time during a red light, they must return to the
starting line. The first rider to reach the finish line wins.
Egg & Spoon – Riders will enter along the rail (under saddle or bareback). Riders will be given a spoon with a plastic egg on it. The objective is to
keep the egg on the spoon as long as possible without touching it. Riders will be asked to perform various movements at various gaits as instructed,
without touching or readjusting the egg on the spoon. If a rider looses their egg or is unable to perform the task requested they will be disqualified
and retire to the center of the arena. The rider who keeps the egg on the spoon longest wins.
Musical Sacks – In the center of the ring sacks will be arranged in a circle. There will be one less sack than there are riders. Riders will ride around
the outside of the sacks (under saddle or bareback) at the designated gait while music plays. Once the music stops riders will need to dismount and
stand on a sack. The rider who is left without a sack is disqualified. One sack will be removed and the cycle will be repeated until there are only 2
riders left. The final two riders will be lined up at a starting line and upon the start of the music will proceed at the designated gait to the final sack
(at the opposite end of the arena). The first rider to the sack wins. During the race riders must always move in a forward direction and must not
break gait.
Water cup - Riders will enter along the rail at a walk (under saddle or bareback). Once all riders are in the arena they will be given a clear plastic
glass with water in it. The glasses will be marked with the start level and a minimum level. The objective is to keep as much water in the cup as
possible. Riders will be asked to perform various movements at various gaits as instructed. If a rider’s water level falls below the minimum or is
unable to perform the task requested they will be disqualified and retire to the center of the arena. The rider with the most water at the end of the
commands wins.
Phone Book Race - Members will line up at one end of the arena (under saddle or bareback). Upon the announcers command they will need to
travel at the designated gait to the opposite end of the arena. At the opposite end they will need to dismount and find the requested page in the phone
book. Once the rider has found and ripped out the page they will mount their horse and travel at the designated gait back to the starting line. The
rider who returns to the start line first with the correct page wins.
Figure 8 partner relay – Two poles will be set approximately 100 feet apart with the first being approximately 20 feet from the starting line (pole
A). The rider will cross the start line, ride down the side of the course to the second pole (pole B), turn around pole B, ride to pole A, turn the
opposite direction around pole A, ride back to pole B, turn around pole B in the opposite direction from pole A, and ride back to the finish line, tag
the second rider, who will perform the same pattern (is not required to turn the same direction, so long as they follow the pattern). Breaking pattern
or knocking over poles will disqualify the team. Time will begin when the first rider crosses the start line and end when the last rider crosses the
finish line. The team with the fastest time wins.
