March 2011
Welcome to the second edition of GLIDES for 2011. We are coming to the end of
the term and it only seems a few days ago that we began the school year. I am
happy to report that our students have settled into the year very quickly and are
working very hard toward achieving their course outcomes. Teachers are very
happy with the progress of the students and there are many exciting things
happening in classrooms and in the school.
NATIONAL PARTNERSHIPS
Our school will participate in National Partnerships for low SES Communities for
four years beginning in 2012. This four year project will focus on transforming
our school to a 21st learning community, where students are engaged in their
learning in a variety of different ways preparing them to function effectively in a
modern world. The whole school community will be involved in a numerous
strategies to assist in building our students’ learning and skills. To assist us to
make this transformation the school will receive considerable funding from the
federal government over the four years.
During the next term, a team of teachers will be putting together our plan for the
next four years. We need to explore information about our school including our
results from all external examinations including NAPLAN, School Certificate and
the HSC. We will also look at information to do with attendance and truancy. We
will be asking students, parents and community members to complete a number of
surveys and participate in a number of focus group discussions. This will allow us
to be well informed in order to address major issues that the information is telling
us. It will be an exciting time.
LEARNING IN THE 21ST CENTURY
To be successful learners and to be effective citizens in the 21st century the
following skills are what people will need. Ask yourself how well you perform in
the following ...
 problem solving and decision making;
 creative and critical thinking;
 collaboration, communication and negotiation;
 intellectual curiosity;
 finding, selecting, structuring and evaluating information; and
 having motivation to be a self starter who is self regulating, responsive
and reflective.
BULLYING
Our school has a zero tolerance toward bullying. Through our welfare and
integrated class programs our students are being skilled in knowing about
bullying. We spend a lot of time talking about all different kinds of bullying the
effects, what to do and results of bullying.

March 2011
Ms Burton, Ms Papayiannis and Mrs Pearse made a very courageous presentation
at our special bullying assembly a few weeks ago. The message was very clear. If
your child encounters any bullying tell someone so we can address it. Students
should not use the internet to bully as the digital footprint is very easy to follow.
We take all matters of bullying very seriously.
HARMONY DAY
Harmony Day was marked on Wednesday 23 March in a wonderful day
celebrating the many cultures of our school and to show the world how we can
value our community with the many cultures that enrich our lives. Our
celebrations of culture and harmony were also celebrated in our Indigenous
morning on Friday 25 March where we were visited by Auntie Mae who shared
her story with us and inspired our girls to be strong women like her and achieve all
dreams in life. She is such an inspiration to us all.
LATENESS TO SCHOOL
I will remind all families that students need to be at school by 8:45 am when the
first bell rings. There are too many students who are arriving quite late. Students
who are continually late will face disciplinary action. We need to instil in all of
our students the importance of punctuality by arriving on time. I will ask for those
students who are continually late to school to please attend to getting to school on
time. Students who are unavoidably late need to have a note to explain lateness.
OPEN AFTERNOON
Year 6 students by the end of the term, have to make a selection choosing which
high school they wish to go to next year. To assist students in the local area we
opened our school doors to the Year 6 students interested in finding out about our
school. The formal part of the afternoon saw some students telling about their
experiences at the school, the school choir performed, and prospective students
were introduced to Liverpool Girls’ High School as a very viable choice. Our
visitors toured the school in small groups to see students actively working in
classrooms on a range of activities. I would like to thank all involved in the
afternoon promoting the great things that our school has to offer our students. I
was very proud of both our students and staff who gave up their time to share their
school with our prospective students.
We now come to the end of term. May I take this opportunity to thank the
wonderful staff that we have in the school who work very hard to provide your
daughters with a magnificent education and learning experience at our school. I
wish you all a happy and restful vacation period. School for our students will
resume on Thursday 28 April 2011. Happy Easter!

Term 1 has been a very busy and productive term full of many exciting events that
have showcased the talents and abilities of our students and the harmonious and
inclusive nature of our school. They have also demonstrated the range of extracurricular activities students are exposed to or participate in.
On March 1st, Year 7 participated in a Mind Matters Day organised by Mrs Pearse,
Head Teacher Welfare. The day included a performance by Brainstorm
productions on ‘Verbal Conflict’ where issue of friendship building and antibullying strategies were exposed.
Year 9 will have their Mind Matters Day on 26 May. This is a compulsory
seminar and activities day for all students. Year 8 will have their Mind Matters
Day in Term 3.
We have been fortunate that Mrs Pearse has been able to arrange talks for all
Years by representatives of the Police Force. Years 7 and 8 will have their talks in
the week commencing the 4 April and will include topics such as cyberbullying
and personal safety. Other Years will have their talks next term.
On Monday 28 March our Writer in Residence, Nadia Wheatley author of the
picture book ‘My Place’ returned to work with Year 7 students. Our students
thoroughly enjoy Ms Wheatley’s workshops and have benefited from her expertise
in writing and literacy.
On the 23 March we celebrated Harmony Day. This whole school annual event
celebrates the diversity of our school community and students were able to enjoy
cultural performances and taste the food of different cultural groups. Students and
staff thoroughly enjoyed the day.
A Careers Fair was held on Wednesday 30 March for Years 10, 11 and 12.
Representatives from Universities, Private Colleges, Liverpool Hospital, Aviation
Industry, Police Force, TAFE and the Academy of Beauty Therapy, provided
students with information on a variety of careers to assist in their subject
selections and career choices.
On 30 March we also held an information afternoon for prospective Year 7
students in 2012. Faculties showcased student work and arranged activities for the
visiting Year 6 students and their parents. Students gave up their time to perform
in a range of activities during the afternoon. Thank you to all the staff and
students who helped during the afternoon showcasing the wonderful work that
happens daily in the school.
I’d like to thank everyone for their hard work during the term and wish you all a
safe and happy autumn vacation.

On the 28 March 2011, Year 7 had a great experience to meet a very
successful author “Nadia Wheatley”. Nadia was in her late 20’s when
she released her first book “Five Times Dizzy”. In total Nadia has
released 20 books since the commencement of her career as a writer.
During her talk she spoke about how she got her ideas for her books and
how as a child she wanted to make writing her job. She also talked
about her popular children’s book “My Place”. The Year 7’s have used
this book for the first six weeks at High School.
Nadia Wheatley is a role model to many children as well as adults. On
behalf of Year 7, I would like to thank Nadia for her time and effort in
visiting Liverpool Girls’ High and wish her all the best for her writing
career.

All Year 7 Visual Arts classes made wonderful dragons in response to
“My Place” by Nadia Wheatley, and they only used paper! Fantastic.
The creative classes made the dragon to celebrate Chinese New Year,
that is celebrated every year in February. The dragon 7E made took
them 4 periods to make and finish. Their art teachers, both Ms
Coleman’s, encouraged them to finish the dragon so that it could be
displayed in the school office.
The dragon is now displayed in the office along with the other dragons
made by other creative classes. Well Done! They all look magnificent in
the school office!

Anney Bee- zine artist , former student of Liverpool Girls high school
made a visit to the Year 9 visual arts elective classes. Anney is a
painter and is in her third year at college of Fine Arts, Uni N.S.W.
Anney shared her stories with the classes and taught them how zines
are made and the story behind zines.
A zine is an abbreviation of the word fanzine or magazine. It is a self
published magazine usually reproduced via photocopier. Zines can be
about anything. An example is how Anney showed the class one of her
zines which represented “a day’s laundry”. She also showcased her
sisters most popular zine which was about her experience with
Sydney’s trainline.
The Year 9 classes were very grateful for Anney’s visit. They are
currently studing Alice in Wonderland and are making zines based on
their study.

Harmony Day 2011 was busier than ever! The day started with a
multicultural display of national costumes/outfits and then moved onto
Zumba and Cultural performances. The SLC sold over 1,000 drinks,
painted about 200 faces and sold many MANY tokens to be used on the
day.
In Week 9, Kajal, Mele and Nevena attended the Regional SLC Meeting
at Fairfield where they connected with SLC students from the South
West Sydney Region, learnt new strategies for improving the school and
interacting with other students. Mele was actually a State SLC Leader
and so she had extra responsibilities of coordinating the day.
Week 10 will see the District meeting at Ingleburn High School and
planning for future events. Term 2 already has many different things
booked in! The SLC in 2011 is working harder than ever, wanting to

On Monday March, I was lucky enough to be invited o the Opening of Art
Express at the Rocks. Helen Pham of Year 12, 2010 had her work selected for
this prestigious exhibition and as her teacher I was invited along with Helen to
the opening. After a lavishly catered afternoon tea with live background music,
the exhibition was opened by the President of the Board of Studies, who
praised the outstanding work of the HSC Art students on display in this
exhibition.
Helen has one of the best venues in the exhibition with her work on display in
the Craft Gallery window. The exhibition curator commended Helen’s work
for its “quiet, intimate charm and excellent drawing skills”. In the audience
was the well known Australian actor, Brian Brown and his wife, Rachel Ward,
as well as many teachers, principals and of course, the talented students.
It was very pleasing for me, as her teacher, to see Helen’s wonderful work on
display. I was so very proud of the talent revealed in the beautiful artwork she
had created and even prouder when it was recognized as being one of the very
best of the 2010 HSC Visual Arts works. Congratulations Helen and enjoy
your studies at the University of Western Sydney.
