Australian Standards, Load and Duty Ratings Explained
Australian Standards
The Australian & New Zealand Standards are a collective of individuals who meet to discuss the communities’ expectations
in relation to specific issues. Through a consensual approach more than 9000 representatives from selected industries reach
agreement on various topics and strive continually to ensure that the Standards accurately reflect the views and opinions of all
stakeholders.
The Australian & New Zealand Standards for Ladders are considered to be the toughest in the world... and they need to be.
When it comes to ladders, safety is paramount and no compromise can or should be made.
Rigorous testing is undertaken to ensure that the ladder’s performance meets the minimum requirements of these stringent
guidelines.
Ladder products sold in Australia and New Zealand must comply to the following standards:

Part 1 Metal
Part 2 Timber
Part 3 Reinforced Plastic
Part 5 Safe Use and Care
Duty and Load Ratings
Ladders manufactured to Australian & New Zealand Standards AS/NZS 1892 must clearly display a Duty Rating and a Load Rating.
These are clearly defined in AS/NZS 1892.1 – Portable Ladders, Metal.

Duty Rating:
The duty rating is assigned by the manufacturer based on the design capabilities of the ladder. There are 2 duty ratings;
Domestic and Industrial.
DOMESTIC
INDUSTRIAL
A ladder designed to be used by a householder for
construction, maintenance and repairs carried out at a
private dwelling for non-commercial purposes.
Any ladder other than a domestic ladder
Domestic duty rated ladders must not be used on
commercial or industrial sites.
Industrial duty rated ladders can be used in domestic and
industrial settings.
DUTY RATING
DUTY RATING
Industrial duty rated ladders are suitable for use on industrial
and commercial work sites.
The differentiation between duty ratings is set in the design criteria to assist in setting the ladders performance and durability. This is
based around maximum dimensional requirements for each rating and minimum testing and performance levels required for each.
Load Rating:
Load rating – Is the maximum load including the weight of the user, materials and tools that the ladder is intended to carry,
in kilograms.
Domestic ladders shall have a load rate not less than 100kg.
Industrial Ladders shall have a load rate not less than 120kg.
Load ratings can be increased for each duty rating, but the ladder must still meet the General, Particular and Performance
requirements of Australian and New Zealand Standards AS/NZS 1892.
Werner, as the manufacture of ladder products has chosen the following criteria of Duty and Load Rates for its products to meet:
