MAYOR’S NEW YEAR’S EVE RUN FOR FOOD
Mayor Paula Dierenfeld is at it again!
She has issued a challenge to Johnston
residents this holiday season. The
Mayor will run one mile (beginning on
New Year’s Eve) for every bag of food,
personal items, or $10 donated to the
Johnston Partnership Food Pantry
between December 1 and 30. The
community delivered in a tremendous
fashion last year, and the Mayor ended
up running 191 miles. Thank you so
much for your generosity. Let’s see if we
can top 191 bags this year!

Food Items - Fresh, nutritious produce, and healthy, nonperishable, unexpired food items.
Monetary donations are always welcome, as the food pantry
is able to purchase needed items in bulk and cheaper than
the rest of the public can buy the same items. Your dollar is
stretched further when given to the Johnston Partnership.
The Johnston Fire Department is once again a part of
the public safety campaign known as “Keep the Wreath
Red,” which promotes fire safety as thousands of Johnston
residents begin to decorate for the holidays.
Firefighters have placed two wreaths outside the Public
Safety Building, located at 6373 Merle Hay Road, and
decorated each with a string of red lights. If a fire occurs
in the city that can be attributed to holiday decorations,
firefighters will replace one of the red lightbulbs with a
white bulb. The mission for our community is to safely
display holiday decorations and “Keep the Wreath Red.”
KNOW THESE IMPORTANT TIPS FOR WINTER IN JOHNSTON
Johnston’s snow ordinance is in effect any time snow removal operations are in progress, which means that parking is
not allowed on public streets at any time during snow removal operations in the city. When vehicles are off City streets,
Public Works crews can clear streets more quickly. Please remember it is also unlawful to place, throw or push snow onto
City streets from private property. You could receive a fine if you violate these codes. Please watch the City of Johnston’s
Facebook page, Twitter feed, and website for updates during snow events.
Clearing snow from all sidewalks adjacent to private property is the responsibility of the property owner. Sidewalks must be
cleared of snow within 48 hours after a snowfall. If snow accumulates to the point it covers a fire hydrant, please clear the
snow around the hydrant. This will save precious time in the event the fire department must access the hydrant during a fire.
TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE JOHNSTON POLICE
DEPARTMENT’S VACATION WATCH PROGRAM
The Johnston Police Department’s Vacation Watch Program is a great way to keep your home

at 515-278-2345 to sign up today. The JPD also suggests asking a trusted neighbor, friend, or
relative to watch your house while you are away and warns against posting or sharing your plans
on social media sites. Learn more at www.cityofjohnston.com/vacationwatch.
