A Message
from
H e a d m a s t e r M i k e N o ta r o
Dear Brookwood Family,
Of its 43-year history, I feel this past year was one of Brookwood’s best. We began the year with a record enrollment, we kicked off fall athletics
with a new stadium and concession facilities, and we experienced a year of exceptional student success. Students in our AP programs continue
to score well above national averages. Nearly 75% of the Class of 2012 graduated with honors. This class also received over $2.55 million in
scholarship awards, excluding the HOPE. Our Middle School continues to offer a diverse experience to our students, from Pi Day to showing
off ballroom dancing skills at their annual Spring Fling. We successfully launched our new Junior Kindergarten program, and our Lower School
enrollment continues to stay near full capacity. These few exemplary highlights speak to our remarkable students and Brookwood family.
These successes would not be possible without the support of our parents, grandparents, former parents, alumni, faculty, staff, and friends. Gifts
to our Brookwood Fund help us with annual expenses that are not covered by tuition dollars. Teachers’ continuing education, new technology
programs, facility maintenance, and library upgrades are all made possible through your Brookwood Fund gifts. Your generosity continues with
gifts to our Financial Aid Fund, Annual Auction, Booster Club, and Ambassadors for the Arts. This support is all vital to providing the traditional
Brookwood experience to our students.
The 2011-2012 school year is the third year Brookwood has participated in the Georgia GOAL Scholarship Program. This program allows Georgia
taxpayers to redirect a portion of their state income tax to Brookwood. In turn, we use these dollars as financial aid for qualified, deserving students
transferring from a public school or those who have never before been to school. Our community support of this program has exceeded our
expectations, and we look forward to continuing this program next year.
Summing up an entire year in a few words is always difficult, but I think most will agree that the 2011-2012 year was one of success, growth,
and giving. Our students thrived, our campus and community grew, and as always, we were blessed by your generosity.
Everyone at Brookwood is looking forward to the 2012-2013 year, and we are working diligently to make this next year better than the last one. Thank you
again for your continued support of our school and our family. My door is always open, and I welcome the opportunity to chat with you all.
Blessings,
Mike Notaro
Headmaster

A Year of Growth
Our Campus Is Growing
Attractive brick columns and iron fencing now line the entrances and boundary of Brookwood School. All power lines formerly leading to the
front of the school have been placed underground, and the poles that supported the old utility lines have been removed. The entrance to the
independent, college-preparatory school on Cardinal Ridge Road, south of Thomasville, now includes an impressive brick-columned gateway
that complements the school’s traditional architecture.
Improvements Upgrade Warrior Stadium
Over the 2011 summer, new bleachers were installed on the west side of the football field to accommodate fans of visiting teams. New
bleachers, that hold up to 750 fans, were erected on the Brookwood side. Other improvements included considerable changes to the former
hillside landscape and extensive new foundation work. The new seating stands on both sides of the football field replaced the bleachers
originally installed in the early 1970s.
In addition, a new brick concession stand replaced the old facility. Here, Booster Club members sell food, beverages, clothing, and spirit items
during football, baseball, softball, soccer, and other outdoor games.
Another brick building was completed to house restrooms in convenient proximity to all the playing fields.
Academic Programs are Growing - Record Enrollment
Brookwood began its 42nd academic year by welcoming 499 enrolled students. In the fall of 2011, we unveiled our new junior kindergarten
program for four-year-old students. The former pre-kindergarten program has gone through several revisions and is now known as Junior
Kindergarten.
Thanks to a fellowship from the National Association of Independent Schools, the Brookwood Lower School Director, Ashley Harper,
participated in sessions at Emory University in Atlanta during the 2011 summer. Harper discovered that what Brookwood now offers in
the junior kindergarten is in line with the four-year old classes of independent schools such as Charlotte Country Day School, Louisville
Collegiate, and the Pinecrest Schools of California. Junior kindergarten introduces the first of a four-year reading curriculum, “Happily
Ever After,” which continues through second grade. These revisions are the foundation of 14 years of Brookwood’s coordinated
curriculum that prepares students for success in higher education.
Unlike most preschool programs, in Brookwood’s junior kindergarten children attend classes in Spanish, technology, music, art, physical
education, and visit the library, just like older students.
Should students enter the school later than junior kindergarten, Brookwood provides support services necessary to integrate wellqualified candidates into the classroom.
A Year of Giving
A Guide to Giving
Brookwood School presents “A GUIDE TO GIVING” to provide you with a better understanding of our annual fundraising efforts. We
hope this calendar will help you in your decision-making and timing to support Brookwood School. Also, we have provided a brief
explanation of our two primary campaigns:
The Brookwood Fund
Our annual fund. The Brookwood Fund is the most important fund you can support. Monies are used in the fiscal year in which they are
obtained since tuition alone does not cover all our day-to-day costs. The Brookwood Fund accounts for 3% of our annual operating budget.
A high parent participation rate is often a requirement for many of our grant requests. Every gift matters, regardless of size!
The Georgia Goal Scholarship Program
GOAL is a tax credit program. If you pay Georgia State Income Tax, you may be eligible to participate in the GOAL program. Participation
and support of the GOAL program allows us to allocate other dollars to our important financial aid fund. Only students who are transferring
from public school, or who have never before attended school, are eligible for consideration of a GOAL scholarship.
Another essential fund is the BROOKWOOD SCHOOL FINANCIAL AID FUND.
You may contribute to this fund year round.

2011-2012 Fundraising Report
• 2011-2012 Brookwood Fund
$148,775 - The Brookwood Fund is our annual campaign and the most important fund you can support. Gifts to the Brookwood Fund off-set the day-to-day expenses of
running a school. Without your generosity, tuition rates could potentially increase approximately 3-5%. Brookwood Fund donations grant our teachers access to continuing
education courses, provide students with advanced software and technology updates, and allow avenues for maintaining our beautiful campus.
• Financial Aid Fund
$142,145 - The Financial Aid Fund provides assistance to families demonstrating financial need. The school believes that a financial aid program is vital to a diverse student body.
• 2011 GOAL Program
$220,167 tax credit contributions received. The Georgia GOAL Scholarship Program provides an opportunity for Georgia tax payers to redirect their tax money to Brookwood
School. These funds serve as financial aid for qualified students who have never before attended school or who are transferring from a Georgia public school. Participation
in the the GOAL program is a phenomenal opportunity for you to personally choose what your tax dollars support.
• Parent Council
$25,425 - The Parent Council exists to further the School’s mission through volunteer work within the School, through fundraising in coordination with the overall School
development plans, through promoting communication within the community, and through special events that bring the School community together. The Parent Council
facilitates the Lower School’s annual magazine sale. Funds from the magazine sale are used to supply items that fulfill classroom needs, such as desks, tables, SMART
Boards, and RITE, which is a reading intervention program for Lower School.
• 2012 Auction
$87,708 - The annual Brookwood School Auction is a night of fun with friends with all proceeds benefitting Brookwood School. The 2012 Brookwood School Auction,
“New Horizons Over Sand and Sea,” netted over $87,000! A portion of those funds helped implement our new iKids program, providing our students access to over 30
iPads in the Lower School and a MacBook cart of 25 laptops for our Middle School. A percentage of these funds are designated for the operating budget.
• 2011-2012 Booster Club
$75,780 - The Brookwood Booster Club plays a vital role in supporting all the athletic programs at Brookwood School. Booster Club funds help offset team travel expenses,
meals, equipment, and other supplies needed for an outstanding Warrior season.
• Ambassadors for the Arts
$520 - Brookwood School offers many ways for our students to participate and learn through the arts. The Ambassadors for the Arts program has been formed
to enhance that experience. Their primary goal is to pool the talents and financial resources of supporters and focus attention on needs and activities of the
arts program at Brookwood. Our students participate in many wonderful experiences such as the school musical, One-Act Play, Lower School plays, Christmas
Concert, Literary Meet, and area art competitions.
• Capital Campaigns
Capital campaigns are held on an as-needed basis as our campus continues to grow. During the 2011-2012 fiscal year, capital improvements were made to
the Brookwood School entrance as well as to Warrior Stadium. Pledges and gifts were also secured in preparation for the new multipurpose building that is
anticipated to be complete by spring 2013.
• Miscellaneous Gifts
Each year Brookwood is fortunate to receive a number of gifts to benefit specific program areas. These special gifts allow us to provide opportunities to our students that
might not otherwise be possible. Donations also come in the form of goods and services that fulfill needs of our students and school. These varied gifts include plants
and trees, books, memorial gifts, buses for special trips, costumes for plays and activities, and assistance on the athletic fields. These gifts of time, talent, and treasure
provide many of the extras our students, faculty, and staff enjoy in the classroom and on the playing field.
Thank You
Support from parents, grandparents, alumni, and friends is essential to Brookwood’s success. Without your support, we would be extremely
limited in what we can offer our students, faculty, and staff. Thank you to all of our supporters of the funds listed on the previous pages and
for those who gave through other avenues. We also thank our many volunteers who help with day-to-day activities and events at Brookwood.

Q’s & A’s
Regarding Brookwood’s Financial Policy
What is the annual operating budget?
The annual operating budget of Brookwood School for 2011-2012 was $4,384,565.
What are Brookwood’s guiding financial principles?
We operate under sound financial guidelines and controls.
We have a balanced operating budget.
We do not incur debt to operate the school.
We do not put the burden of capital expenses on our parents in the form of tuition; rather, all capital expenditures will be covered by separate capital fund drives.
We hope those who can afford to will contribute to fundraising efforts, but it has never been mandatory.
We do not obligate funds that we have not collected, have fully committed as pledges, or have covered by the Endowment.
We raise funds to cover Financial Aid rather than to give discounts or including it in tuition paid by other families.
How is tuition used?
We aim to keep tuition as low as possible. Tuition is used for operating costs only, and the goal is for tuition to cover personnel costs (salaries and benefits),
which is approximately 80% of the total budget.
Brookwood has a low tuition compared with nearby independent schools, Maclay and Deerfield-Windsor:

Why does Brookwood ask for donations?
Like most schools, the most significant challenge we face is financial, and we must operate on a balanced budget. The primary source of revenue is tuition, but this
income covers only 80% of the school’s annual operations. Every child at Brookwood School is subsidized between $1,000-$2,000 each year by funds raised and
Endowment support. The Endowment contributes approximately 50% of the remaining 20%, thus helping us “close the gap” between what parents pay in tuition
dollars and what it actually costs to educate our students. Gifts to the Brookwood Fund, our annual campaign, provide approximately 20% of this difference, as do
contributions to Financial Aid, which are also raised independently. The balance is made up through the Auction, Parent Council, Booster Club, Ambassadors for
the Arts, and various student organizations and class fundraisers. Combined, these funds help us keep tuition as low as possible.
An important point about the Brookwood Fund is that each gift, regardless of size, is important. We cannot all give at the same level, but we can all
participate. A high rate of parent and alumni participation is an important measure of the involvement of the school community. Also, this support helps
to influence the grant money we receive from foundations and corporations.
How does Brookwood fund capital improvements?
As noted previously, we will not put the burden of capital expenses on our parents in the form of tuition; rather, all capital expenditures are to be covered
by separate capital fund drives. We do hope that those who can afford to will contribute to capital campaigns. A part of each capital campaign includes
raising funds for the Endowment to cover increased costs of overhead associated with capital projects. We will not break ground on any capital project
until all commitments are secured, and we will not obligate funds that we have not collected, have fully committed as pledges, or have covered by the
Endowment.
What role does the Endowment play?
Our goal is to provide a quality education for our students at all levels. We believe this goal means having good facilities, a safe and appealing environment
for learning and development, and excellent teachers and staff. As noted, the Endowment contributes approximately 10% of the annual operating budget
of the school. Often, the contribution is significantly larger as it provides funds to help maintain and improve the facilities. This Fund has a significant
impact in helping to keep tuition down.
How can I support Brookwood?
We hope that you will continue to support Brookwood School by telling others about the school; letting us know about prospective students/families;
sending us your thoughts and ideas; thinking of Brookwood when you read an interesting book, know of an interesting speaker, or have a visiting guest
who might be of interest to our students; and most important, giving of your “time, talent, and/or treasure.” There are so many ways to become involved
as a volunteer. Additionally, you may also make a tax-deductible contribution to one or more of the following:
