Message from the Executive Director
Dear Valued Supporters of Power To Be:
Thank you for supporting Power To Be. In 2010, we experienced the most successful fundraising campaign to
date: exceeding $1 million dollars in revenue. This translates into direct spending on core programs, which grew
15% and reached more than 400 families.
Power To Be continues to fill the widening gaps in health, education and social service sectors for people
facing significant life challenges. We empower these people to discover their own ability though kayaking,
camping, rock climbing and other outdoor activities that translate into other parts of their lives, such as school,
family or community involvement. Their belief in their own ability is our commitment.
Looking forward, our biggest challenge is meeting the increased demand for programs while tackling a looming
economy. In 2011, we project to raise $1.2 million to extend our reach on Vancouver Island and in the Lower
Mainland. To attain our target we need to increase support from our volunteers, grow our giving platform, and
above all, remain collaborative within our community.
Power To Be is in the business of changing lives and we could not make a difference without the unyielding
generosity of donors, volunteers and staff. We hope you will continue to support our mission with your dollars,
time and resources to help the youth, adults and families we serve.

Dear Friends:
These have been tough but inspiring times. Never in Power To Be’s history have we seen so great a need
among families and individuals seeking our important services. In fact, 2010 saw record levels of demand for
our charitable services. I am most pleased to report that Power To Be is responding to these demands in more
efficient and impact-full ways than ever before.
On behalf of the staff, Board of Directors, advisory board and participants in our programs, I want to express
our sincere gratitude to our donors for supporting Power To Be. Additionally, our staff and volunteers are to be
commended for another year of hard work, and exceptional and safe service delivery. It is the commitment and
capabilities of the Power To Be staff that enable the organization to have the sustained positive impact that
is has. Meanwhile, the Board and its committees keep a watchful eye on the governance and policies of the
organization. We are proud of the efficiencies that Power To Be demonstrates each day with low and effective
administrative spending, and over 76% of our expenditures being well spent on the delivery of our services. 2010 marked my fifth year as Chair of the Board and it has been my distinct honour to serve Power To Be in
this capacity. I’ll be passing the torch of Board leadership in 2011 to Claudia Blum. Claudia will most certainly
provide Power To Be great Board leadership and I look forward to working closely with Claudia and our other
dedicated directors over the year to come.
We are always grateful for the shared commitment on the part of our donors, supporters,
volunteers and staff to provide our much-needed services to our communities. We hope to
have your support again next year, and look forward to another year of positive contributions
to the children and families we serve.

The Power To Be Adaptive
Recreation Program
The Adaptive Recreation Program is a positive response to the
community need for inclusive, nature-based recreation activities
for people living with a barrier or disability. Within the Adaptive
Recreation Programming, Power To Be services a wide range of
people, to explore and discover their unique abilities.
2010 successfully delivered Adaptive Recreation for youth with
autism, families living with an acquired brain injury, people who
are deaf or hard of hearing, people living with type 1 diabetes,
oncology patients and youth adults and families living with
developmental, cognitive or physical disabilities.

The Power To Be
Wilderness School
The Power To Be Wilderness School is a five-year program for
youth that fosters positive social development and life skills
through outdoor adventure activities. Enrolled participants are
challenged and encouraged to engage in leadership activities
and connect with the wilderness through outdoor education.
The process instills confidence, creates stability and builds
structure so they can succeed in the school, at home and in
their communities.

Financials: Building Our Future
2010 has proven to be the strongest fiscal year for Power To Be to date. With the
return of numerous donors and many new supporters, Power To Be grew revenue
by 14.5% over 2009 to exceed $1 million for the first time. Donations from individuals,
corporations and foundations grew by 11.6%, which remains the strongest source
of revenue, representing 62.5% of total money raised. Power To Be continues to use
contributions wisely through disciplined spending, extensive use of volunteers and
creating synergies by way of community partnerships. Additionally, predictable
sources of funding through multi-year corporate sponsors continue to rise,
ensuring the sustainability of Power To Be.
