Watching our students grow, both physically and academically, has been a very exciting and rewarding experience. As Devers’ outstanding teachers continue to seek mastery at all levels, evidence of your child’s academic growth should be observed. At Devers School, we celebrate and recognize many holidays throughout the school year. As each holiday approaches, I ask that you do not bring treats in for students unless the teacher sends home a note requesting specific items for the class. The Mid-Atlantic district focuses on decreasing unhealthy snacks at school. As you know, attendance is vital for the success of your child’s education. I encourage you to wholeheartedly support us by allowing your child to remain in school for the entire school day. DoDEA has adopted a quarter day policy which affects attendance. If students check-in after 9:00 a.m., they will be counted absent for that portion of the day. If students check-out before 2:50 p.m., they will be counted absent for that portion of the day. We encourage only emergency check-outs after 2:15 p.m. Thank you for your invaluable support and involvement in Devers Elementary School. Together we will continue to achieve great things! 01 – Doughnuts with Dr. McBroom 03 – NO SCHOOL - CSI Teacher PD Day 06-10 – Terra Nova Testing 09 – End Pre-K Trimester 2 10 – NO SCHOOL - Pre-K Students: Pre-K Teacher Workday 16 – Pre-K Trimester 2 Progress Reports Sent Home 20-23 – Book Fair 23 – Book Fair/STEAM Night 30 – End Quarter 3 Report Period K-8 31 – NO SCHOOL - Teacher Workday The Devers School & DoDEA Mission Educate, Engage, and Empower each student to succeed in a dynamic world. To do so, we ask that you update the list of adults who can pick your child up from school. If we do not have them on your list, we cannot release your child to them. Any adult must have proper ID to be on school grounds; this includes friends picking up children. Remember, we maintain a 100% ID check policy to enter the building, pick up a child, or visit a classroom. This is the time of year when music education becomes the focus of schools across the nation. The purpose of MIOSM is to raise awareness of the importance of music education for all children and to remind citizens that schools are where all children should have access to music. To celebrate MIOSM Devers Elementary students will be joining the biggest virtual school chorus in the world. Students will sing the inspiring anthem, "Power in Me" by Rebecca Lawrence. Students will also learn about notation, rhythm, melody and part singing, listening, phrasing, choreography and so much more through song. The curriculum is engaging, fun, and exciting, with arrangements of standard choral literature to familiar rock and pop songs, to others of hope, inspiration, and empowerment. In addition to the largest virtual choir Devers music students will be celebrating with recorders, dance movements, musicals, and learning to sing and act out simple stories they know. March 2nd is Dr. Seuss’ birthday. This year Dr. Seuss would have been 113. Dr. Seuss is most famous for his children’s books like Cat in The Hat, Green Eggs and Ham, and The Lorax. These three books were turned into films. Dr. Seuss was born with the name Theodore Seuss Geisel. He wrote and published more than 60 children’s books. In honor of Dr. Seuss and “Read Across America”, Devers Elementary School will have Seuss-themed dress up days, guest readers, and a parade. In addition, Devers’ students will complete a scavenger hunt each day. The students will also receive a book and a bookmarker to continue to promote reading, at school and at home. FLES News Art News During the month February the students learned about foods and emotions. In March they will be learning about spring, clothing, and transportation. You are welcome to visit our Spanish class. Students can access Spanish educational video in Kids You- Tube. Students can access Onlinefreespanish .com to practice their Spanish skills taught in class. All grade levels are finishing up a painting unit. We have viewed artwork from Wassily Kandinsky, Vincent Van Gogh, Georges Seurat, and Franz Marc just to name a few. We will begin a printmaking unit in a couple of weeks. In April we will begin working with earth clay. Students will be making hand built pottery pieces that will be fired in our kiln and glazed. There are many exciting projects ahead. Please encourage your children to talk about what they are learning in the art classroom. Email: kim.mcbroom @am.dodea.edu Phone: (910) 907-0204 The Counselor’s Corner TERRANOVA TIME! Test Dates: March 6-10, 2017 SUGGESTIONS FOR PARENTS • Be sure that your child is at school on time. The late bell is at 8:20 AM. Rushing and worrying about being late could affect performance on the test. Testing will begin exactly at 9 AM each day. • Encourage your child to employ good study habits that are useful in test-taking as well as in other work. These habits include following directions carefully, avoiding careless errors, and rechecking work. • Explain that the purpose of the test is to find out which skills students have learned and which skills need further development. Remind your child it is an opportunity for students to show what they have learned in school. It gives the teachers information that helps them know what to teach. • Let your child know that the test is a “snapshot” of the many things he or she has learned so far. Studying at the last minute for the test won’t help very much because the test will cover more than can be learned in a few extra hours. • Let your child know that you consider the test important, but encourage him or her not to become too anxious about it. Students who are calm and selfconfident do better on tests. • Be sure your child gets plenty of sleep and have a good, nourishing breakfast and lunch. Stay away from sugary cereals and provide high protein meals. Test taking is hard work and takes a lot of energy. • Remember to ask your child about the testing at the end of each day. When the results are available, you and your child should review and discuss all comments. Any unclear comments should be discussed with the teacher. • Meet with your child’s teacher to discuss his or her progress. Ask the teacher or staff at school to suggest homework activities that will support your child’s overall education, improvement, and education.
