Service for the printing industry
Moving step by step
How an industrial
production tool came from
an unusual vision
(HK) Jürgen Vetters prints and processes
8 and 16-page products in A4 format in
the quiet German town of Radeburg. This
works surprisingly well despite
(seemingly extremely) tough competition
from high-volume presses. Business is
so good that the company grows continually and it was necessary to extend its
comprehensively equipped 8-page
Octoman.
These presses can no longer be
purchased new on the market. So what
was to be done? Printing company
Druckerei Vetters also had a somewhat
ageing Zirkon Supra. However, its folding capabilities were not satisfactory.
There was also an Octoman in a poor
state, but with the right configuration.
Considerations began: Could someone
make the press required from these?
Everything came from the same
company, in close cooperation and within
the time specified. New electronics for
the section of the Octoman from the
cooling unit on, a newly designed gear
and drive concept to connect the
Octoman was developed, the entire
mechanical, electrical and pneumatic
overhaul of all components took place,
and finally everything was put back together.
Today the decade-old press is operated
via a cutting-edge touch panel and software from PHS. Even the operating staff
enjoy working with the ‘new’ press.
The SUPman was finished.
Sounds easy, but when you look at the
details you soon realise that this was an
extremely challenging task. Nevertheless, one month before the deadline the
team from PHS was able to certify the
quality of the press with a printing and
folding test by the Saxon Institute for
Press Technology.

The first step was to purchase components needed cheaply on the market and
relocate.
This is where PrintHouseService GmbH
(PHS) came in. It had already taken over
various services for the company on-site
some time ago. Initiating the relocation,
evaluation, complete disassembly and
repairs were the next steps. A Zirkon
does not fit to an Octoman at all in terms
of electronics and its drive technology. Its
folder was also in a condition to be
expected after several decades. Everything had to be completely overhauled. Is
that possible? Is that economical? How
long would it take? What are the risks?
Jürgen Vetters had to first find the
answers to a lot of questions. Opinions
varied widely, even those primarily from
Supra in front
within the company. Time was running
out as the newly compiled technology
had to be up-and-running by March 2016 The folder in particular delivered far better results when it came to folding tolerat the latest.

Octoman behind
This is a great achievement for Druckerei
Vetters and the team from PHS.
Jürgen Vetters: “I enjoy working with professionals and in our case we have seen
that it pays off.”
“PrintHouseService naturally has a
broader service spectrum than when we
first entered the market a few years ago.
Nevertheless, we have remained a small
and powerful team with a wealth of
expertise,” says Harald Klein, head of
System Service.
Timo Valentin, head of the PHS site in
Plauen, is pleased with the outcome:
“With this project we were able to show
how a seemingly exotic project can be
implemented cost-effectively and quickly
with the right know-how. We look forward
to further projects from Druckerei
Vetters.”
