Function
●
●
●
The function of the digestive system is to convert food into nutrients that
get absorbed into the body and then move the leftover food/waste out of
the body.
It’s a process of turning the food you eat into nutrients.
It takes anywhere from 12 to 72 hours to digest
food completely, depending on what the food is.

Analogy
●
The digestive system is like a post office it receives mail which is like the
food in the digestive system, gets processed, and then is sent out.

Major/Accessory Organs
● Large intestine: Its job is to absorbs water from the food and
then gets rid of anything unneeded. 1.5 meters
● Small intestine: Its job is to absorb the nutrients out of what
we eat and drink. 22-24 feet long
● Accessory organs: The salivary glands create saliva, the
pancreas creates digestive enzymes, and the liver creates bile.

Diseases: Gallstones
➢ Solid material that forms in the
gallbladder
➢ There are two types, one is made
of cholesterol and one is made of
pigment
➢ Blocks bile ducts

➢ They are removed by getting your gallbladder surgically removed
or by taking medicine that dissolves it

Diseases Celiac Disease
★ Reaction to eating gluten
★ Caused when the immune system creates
antibodies to gluten which then attack the
intestinal lining
★ Produces inflammation that damages the small
intestine

Interactions With Circulatory
● The circulatory system carries the absorbed nutrients
in the bloodstream to all the body cells.

Interactions with Muscular
● The muscles in the muscular system

Interactions With Endocrine
When we digest carbohydrates,
they’re converted into sugars,
then the endocrine system
yields the hormone, insulin, to
control how much sugar is in the
blood flow and the amount at a
certain time.
