TO OBSTRUCT OR IMPEDE THE FLOW OF
AN INLAND WATER BY MEANS OF
IMPOUNDING WORKS.
Notice is hereby given that an application is being
made to the Severn River Authority by L. B.
Thwaites, Esq., of Hurdiss, Harbury, Leamington
Spa, Warwickshire for a licence to obstruct or impede
the flow of a tributary stream to Tach Brook by
means of an earth embankment approximately 400
metres south-east of Chesterton Church, in the
parish of Chesterton, Leamington Spa, Warwickshire
at Map Reference, SP 359 578. The object of
impounding water by means of the works is to form
an ornamental lake.
The capacity of the reservoir at overflow level will
be approximately 22,700,000 litres (5,000,000 gallons).
A copy of the application and of any map, plan
or other document submitted with it rr)ay be inspected
free of charge at the Farm Office, Hurdiss, Harbury,
Leamington Spa at all reasonable hours during the
period beginning on 1st September 1972 and ending
on 29th September 1972.

made to the Severn River Authority by Leverhulme
Estates, Estate Office, Thornton Hough, Wirral,
Cheshire L63 IJD to vary the licence, serial number
18/54/4/938 to abstract water from a borehole
100 ft. deep at NCR. SJ. 595268, Hopton, Hodnet
Parish, Salop:
The variation applied for is:
To increase the quantities licenced from 400
gallons per day and 146,000 gallons per year to
2,000 gallons per day and 730,000 gallons per
year and to add six properties to the source and to
change the use from domestic to private water
supply.
A copy of the application and of any map, plan
or other document submitted with it may be inspected
free of charge at the Estate Office, Thornton Hough,
Wirral, Cheshire at all reasonable hours during the
period 4th September to 29th September 1972.

The West Ward (Elland) Smoke Control
Order, 1972
Notice is hereby given that Elland Urban District
Council, in exercise of the powers conferred on them
by section 11 of the Clean Air Act, 1956, on the
23rd August 1972, made the West Ward (Elland)
Smoke Control Order, 1972, declaring the area
described in the Schedule hereto to be a smoke control
area, which Or4er is about to be submitted to the
Secretary of State for the Environment for confirmation.
Subject to the exemption provided by virtue of
section 11 (4) of the Act, if, .on any date after the
Order has come into operation smoke is emitted from
a chimney of any building within the smoke control
area the occupier of 'that building shall be guilty
of an offence and liable to a fine not exceeding
£20 unless he proves that the emission of smoke
was not caused by the use of any fuel other than an
authorised fuel.
The authorised fuels include
anthracite, coke and other carbonised fuels, gas and
electricity.
- If confirmedt the Order will not come into operation before 1st October 1973, or before a later date
determined by the Secretary of State for the
Environment.
Copies of the Order and of the map referred to
therein may be inspected free of charge at the office
of the Clerk of the Council, Council Offices, Elland,
at all reasonable times during the period of 6 weeks
from the 5th September 1972.
Within the said period any person who will be
affected by the Order may, by notice in writing to
the Secretary of State for the Environment, 2 Marsham Street, London, SW1P 3EB, object to the
confirmaition of the Order.
SCHEDULE
The area comprising the whole of the West War-d
of the Urban District except that part which is
included in the Elland (Nos. 1 and 2) Smoke Control
Areas.

The Borough of Middleton (Alkrington No. 18)
Smoke Control Order, 1972
Notice is hereby given that the Middleton Borough
Council in exercise of the powers conferred on them
by section 11 of the above-mentioned Act on the
2nd August 1972, made an Order entitled:
The Borough of Middleton (Alkrington No. 18)
Smoke Control Order, 1972, declaring the area
described in the Schedule hereto to be a smoke
control area, which Order is about to be submitted to the Secretary of State for the Environment, for confirmation.
Subject to the exception provided' by the Order
and by virtue of section 11 (4) of the Act (including
without prejudice to the generality of the foregoing,
those provided by the Smoke Control Areas
(Exempted Fireplaces) Order, 1957), if, on any day
