Adaptations Learning Objective: I can identify, describe and explain the adaptations of Polar Bears and Camels which help them survive. Learning Experiences: I can identify and classify examples of living things, past and present, to help me appreciate their diversity. I can relate physical and behavioural characteristics to their survival or extinction - SCN 2-01a This activity introduces your pupils to the physical and behavioural characteristics of Polar Bears and Camels that help ensure their survival in different climate environments. It gets them to think about how Polar Bears and Camels are adapted to live in particular climate zones, and invent some adaptations that would need to happen if they were to survive elsewhere on Earth! Get your pupils to work in teams and match the cards up to the correct animals below. Adaptations I have thick fur which helps keep me warm I have very wide and large paws to stop me falling through the ground I walk on My fur acts as camouflage in arctic environments My paws help me dig deep dens to protect myself from the harsh weather My feet are flat and large to stop me falling into the sand I can close my nostrils to stop sand getting into them I have 11cm of blubber (fat) to help me stay warm I have sharp teeth and claws to help me hunt I have thick fur on the top of my body for shade I have thin fur on most of my body to help me stay cool Adaptations What changes would you make to a Polar Bear so that they could survive in a Hot Desert? What changes would you make to a Camel so they could survive in the Cold Arctic? Draw your Desert Polar Bear and Arctic Camel below! Adaptations This is my Hot Desert Polar Bear.
