Seduta Numru 198 11111/2014 Document 1 The following food and beverage items listed hereunder are always subject to the nutrient levels as established within the parameters set in the Nutrient Based Guidelines for Food and Drink Providers. FOOD AND BEVERAGE STANDARDS List of Permissible Foods SAVOURY ITEMS Fresh and toasted sliced sandwiched bread, rolls, baguettes, ftira, a selection of buns, ciabatta, pocket bread, pittas with healthy fillings1 preferably using wholegrain breads.2 Ħobż Malti - Maltese bread preferably wholegrain filled with tuna, tomatoes, onions, lettuce, beans capers, olives and fresh herbs. A selection of pizzas with healthy toppings, preferably using a wholegrain dough base. Hot dishes, such as baked rice and pasta and vegetable lasagne. Couscous and pasta dishes. Pies and fillings3. Baked potatoes; jacket potatoes with healthy fillings such as ricotta or cheese with less than 25% total fat, tuna, vegetables, corn and pulses. Soups low in fat and salt, made with fresh or frozen ingredients including a selection of vegetables, pulses and lentils Quiches with healthy Burgers made from 100% lean meat. Burgers grilled or baked but not fried. Fish patties made with healthy ingredients such as tuna, salmon, vegetables, potatoes and grilled/ baked, not fried. Boiled/poached egg. SALADS AND DIPS A selection of salads with minimal amount of light dressings. A selection of low fat/low salt dips vegetable, tuna, ricotta, bean, bigilla, hummus. 1 Healthy fillings or toppings can include one or more of the following: a variety of fresh or frozen vegetables, tuna, sardines, mackerel, salmon, chicken, turkey, ricotta, baked omelettes and patties, skimmed mozzarella, low/ medium fat cheese, hard boiled eggs, traditional Maltese bigilla, beans and lentils, kunserva (no added salt), low fat spread, low fat and low salt dressings. 2 Wholegrain products include those made with wholegrain flour, wholewheat flour, cracked or bulgur wheat, graham flour, wholegrain corn flour or corn meal, whole oatmeal, whole rye, spelt, quinoa, wholegrain brown rice flour. The terms ‘multigrain’, ‘stone ground’ and ‘pumpernickel’ do not necessarily mean that the product is wholegrain. 3 Pies and Quiches with healthy fillings and having only a pastry base. These should not be eaten often and portion sizes should be small 1 SAVOURY SNACKS SWEET SNACKS Galletti, water crackers, crackers, rice cakes and crispbreads, preferably wholegrain and low fat, low salt varieties. Fresh or frozen yoghurts (containing less than 2.5% total fat, 1.5% saturated fat and less than 12% of sugar). Nuts and seeds, not fried, without added salt or added sugars3. Fruit breads. Air-popped popcorn, butter or salt. without added Sweet Snacks should be eaten less often and Desserts should only be offered occassionally. The higher up in the list these ingredients occur, the higher in ‘added sugars’ the product is. 2 Document 2 FOOD AND BEVERAGE STANDARDS List of Permissible Drinks Still Water. Fresh milk or UHT, preferably fresh and local For Primary and Secondary school pupils containing: 2.5% or less total fats. (children under 5 years of age should not consume skimmed milk) Oat, rice, barley and other cereal drinks with less than 2.5% total fats, 1.5% saturated fat and 12% total sugars. We also have a Catering company who prepares lunches and delivers in hot cupboards. The food consists mostly of healthy lunches and generally they will always include vegetables. All the above products are as approved bv the Health Promotion Directorate. The tuck shop offers fresh home made tuna and fruit salads, Maltese bread with tuna, rice salads, nuts, yoghurts and warm freshly baked farinaceous dishes. As for sweets, we follow the menus given on the HELP document. Drinks are water, milk and iced teas with no added sugar. Moreover the tuck shop sells snacks such as cereals, snack bars and pop corn.
