Comments
Site is on Radio Hill, in the southeastern area of the Elysian Park. Power is available, but freewave is required.
Site location is a compromise with a local citizen activist group (“Citizens to Save Elysian Park”) that opposes development of
any kind within the park boundaries. Site is within 20 feet of a large metal antenna tower (~175 feet high) that is located
northeast and east from the GPS antenna. Sky view is good to the south and adequate to the north.
Additional costs reflect the need for a security fence around the GPS monument, and construction of a nature trail kiosk
requested by the host and local citizens group.
A percussion drill rig is recommended for this site.

-The site is underlain by 0 to 3 feet of artificial fill placed to form the level building pad for the building and antennas.
-Bedrock unit below the fill is sandstone of the Tertiary-age Puente Formation. The sandstone is well-bedded and
medium- to coarse-grained. Structurally, the site is located on the south flank of the N60W-trending Elysian Park
anticline.

Liquefaction is not a concern at this bedrock site. Subsidence as a result of groundwater or oil extraction has
not been reported in this area, even though two active oil fields (Union Station, and Los Angeles Downtown)
are located within 2 km of the site. A third oil field, Boyle Heights, is also located within 2 km of the site, but it
is abandoned.
Ground water is not expected to be encountered in the borings drilled for the GPS monument.
Some amplification of seismic energy is expected on this topographic high.
Additional
geologic
information
One landslide has been documented on the steeper northern side of Elysian Park. The original slide was
probably created by the cutting action of the Los Angeles River; the slide occurred even though bedding dips
into slope. The slide was reactivated when RIverside Drive was graded. No landslides have been mapped in
the GPS site area, however, geomorphic indicators suggest a possibility of landslides in some areas on the
south side of Radio Hill. In this area, the bedding dips steeper than the slope (EW strike and dips to the south
of between 43 and 55 degrees; slope is 25 degrees from horizontal).

Sky view to the south is good with trees masking sky view to approximately 10 degrees height.
Sky view to the north is hampered by the large communication tower that is located in a range of
N45E to N100E from the GPS site. The building, overhead lines, and a few antenna poles also
affect the north sky view.

Summary of Reconnaissance
PKRD
unknown
Los Angeles County Parks & Recreation personnel do not know of planned changes/improvements to the antennae towers. They,
along with the Citizens group plan to develop Radio Hill as a park with nature trails, and have requested that SCIGN provide an
explanatory kiosk regarding the GPS site. The site is isolated; a moderate number of homeless people live on Radio Hill.
Power can be obtained from the nearby building; Parks and Recreation prefers electrical boxes/instrumentation to be mounted on the
building. While this is a communication antenna complex, there are no known phone connections in the building. There is also no wate
for drilling purposes available at the site.
This is an environmentally and politically sensitive site.
