Raising Crops in Zimbabwe

R aising Crops in Zimbabwe
Jane Irwin’s Pilgrim Walk
through Portugal and Spain
Your kind donation will contribute towards a farming and agriculture project in
Zimbabwe. Gifts will go to TEAR Australia, and their partner Foundations for Farming (FFF),
to help bring a sustainable future, and food security, to rural communities in Zimbabwe.
What does the project do?
Over 30 years ago, Brian Oldreive was a
successful tobacco farmer in Zimbabwe. After
becoming a Christian in 1978, he felt called to
give up farming tobacco, and to concentrate on
growing foodstuffs. The switch in crops ended
in devastation for his farm. However, by working
as a farm manager for several estates, he began
to experiment with different farming techniques
which were ideally suited to Zimbabwe’s soil
and climate conditions. Oldrieve discovered two
approaches that could significantly increase crop
yields: stop deep ploughing, but rather hoe by
hand; and stop stubble burning after harvesting,
but rather use it as mulch.
As a result of high yields from these techniques,
and Oldeive’s passion, Foundations for Farming
was formed to help train and encourage farmers
and their communities to adopt this approach.
Much of the work is focused on sustainability
through agricultural training, with some start-up
provision of seeds and tools. Over the last 12
months FFF has worked with 10,000 smallholder
farmers across 50 ‘model sites’, to ensure
that they get the best from their crops, for
themselves, their families and their communities
Who is Foundations for Farming?
Foundations for Farming was initiated by River of
Life Church, Westgate PVO (RoLW) in response
to the food insecurity in Zimbabwe, which was
once known as the bread basket of Africa.
FFF is a partnership between RoLW and the
Evangelical Fellowship of Zimbabwe (EFZ), which
comprises over 100 denominations.
Who is TEAR?
TEAR Australia is a Christian agency that
supports development, relief and advocacy
projects that give priority to the rights, interests,
needs and capacities of the poorest and most
marginalised people. These projects seek to
address both the symptoms and the causes of
poverty through activities that produce tangible
changes. TEAR’s work is implemented in
partnership with local agencies.
