Things you need to know!!!!
As you all know we have started our fundraising
efforts to benefit the Alzheimer’s Network of
Oregon. Our first fundraiser is selling Shamrocks
for $1.00 to be followed by eggs in time for
Easter! Your name will be put on the eggs and
hung on the wall to show your support.
Again, we would like to extend the offer to all of
you to contribute letters, gifts (such as candy,
beef jerky, socks, underclothes) or any other
items you may like to send to the troops
defending our country.
Congratulations to our employee of the quarter,
Irene Beltran!!! Thanks to all of you for your
input and your votes. Irene’s sunny disposition
and compassionate, caring attitude make her a
true asset to our building as many of you stated.
I hope you all enjoy this beautiful spring
weather!! Please make good use of your
BBQs…we will!!!!
And don’t forget to take a minute to smell the
flowers!!

Man’s New Best Friends
These days, kids don’t beg their parents for a
dog or cat. Times have changed and so have
pets. On April 18, Pet Owner’s Day, don’t be
surprised if you see pet owners walking these
strange animals down the street.
Sugar Glider – This tiny
marsupial, or pouched
animal, comes from the
forests of Australia.
Like a flying squirrel,
when it jumps from a
great height, it spreads
its “wings” and glides
over one hundred feet.
Anteaters – P it’s crazy, but people do keep
these exotic animals as pets. One owner
explains that these animals need lots of
attention or they will cry. Also, they must be
walked once a day on a leash so that they don’t
climb a tree or hide under a car. And of course,
be sure to feed them ants, perhaps in a soup
with avocados and blue cheese.
Teacup Pig – As the name implies, these
miniature pigs fit into a teacup at birth. Owners
gush over their intelligence and cuddliness.
While most pigs grow up to 300 pounds, when
fully grown these weigh in at a mere 60 pounds,
which make them perfect for city-dwellers living
in small apartments.
They say that owners resemble their pets.
Does that mean that strange animals have
strange owners? Not necessarily. The actor
George Clooney owned a 300-pound potbellied
pig named Max for eighteen years, which
Clooney says is the longest relationship he’s
ever had. Even presidents have owned exotic
pets. John Quincy Adams owned a crocodile,
and Benjamin Harrison owned a pet goat
named Old Whiskers. This goat proved to be so
ornery that the president once chased him down
Pennsylvania Avenue. How’s that for taking
your pet for a walk?
Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease
Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD)
(pronounced CROYZ-felt YAH-cob) is a
rare, rapidly fatal disorder affecting
about 1 out of 1 million people per year
worldwide. It usually affects individuals
older than 60.
CJD is one of the prion (PREE-awn) diseases.
These diseases occur when prion protein, which
is present throughout the brain, begins to
assume an abnormal three-dimensional shape.
This shape gradually triggers the protein
throughout the brain to fold into the same
abnormal shape, leading to increasing damage
and destruction of brain cells.
Recently, “variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease
(vCJD)” was identified as the human disorder
believed to be caused by eating meat from
cattle affected by “mad cow disease.” It tends to
occur in much younger individuals, in some
cases as early as their teens.
Symptoms of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease
The first symptoms may involve
impairment in memory, thinking and
reasoning or changes in personality and
behavior.
• Depression or agitation also tend to be
early symptoms.
• Problems with movement may be present
from the beginning or appear shortly
after the other symptoms.
• Symptoms progress rapidly and death
typically occurs within a year.
• There may be characteristic changes on
an electroencephalogram (EEG, or “brain
wave” test).
• There may also be a characteristic
substance called “14-3-3 protein” in the
spinal fluid.
•
Treatment of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease
(CJD)
There is currently no treatment for CJD or vCJD.

Heros Born Down Under
When World War I erupted in Europe in 1914,
Australia and New Zealand were young countries
on the other side of the globe. By 1915, Australia
and New Zealand shed their innocence and
joined the war on the side of the Allies.
Under a plan by
Winston Churchill, the
newly formed Australian
and New Zealand Army
Corps, or ANZAC,
shipped out to the
Gallipoli Peninsula in
Turkey with the aim of capturing Constantinople,
the capital of the Ottoman Empire. On April 25,
the ANZAC force landed at Gallipoli and began
an eight-month long struggle that ended in
massive casualties and defeat. Out of the rubble,
though, emerged the “Anzac Spirit,” a legacy of
the ANZAC troops’ bravery that redefined
Australia and New Zealand’s national identity.
Today, Anzac Day is celebrated on April 25 to
remember Australian and New Zealand soldiers
of all wars, past and present.
The “Anzac Spirit” captures the persona of the
ANZAC soldiers. They were strong, courageous,
loved each other like brothers, fought with
reckless valor, dismissed authority, and laughed
no matter how dire the odds. One war
correspondent wrote of their storming the
Gallipoli shore, “They waited neither for orders
nor for the boats to reach the beach, but,
springing out into the sea, they waded ashore,
and, forming some sort of rough line, rushed
straight on the flashes of the enemy’s rifles.” The
Gallipoli Campaign marked both the birth of
nationhood for Australia and New Zealand, as
well as the birth of their proud national
characters.
"The fool doth think he is wise,
but the wise man knows himself
to be a fool."
~ William Shakespeare (born April 23, 1564)
April’s Charms
When April scatters charms of primrose gold
Among the copper leaves in thickets old,
And singing skylarks from the meadows rise,
To twinkle like black stars in sunny skies;
When I can hear the small woodpecker ring
Time on a tree for all the birds that sing;
And hear the pleasant cuckoo, loud and long –
The simple bird that thinks two notes a song;
When I can hear the woodland brook, that could
Not drown a babe, with all his threatening mood;
Upon these banks the violets make their home,
And let a few small strawberry blossoms come:
When I go forth on such a pleasant day,
One breath outdoors takes all my cares away;
It goes like heavy smoke, when flames take hold
Of wood that's green and fill a grate with gold.
~ W.H. Davies (Welch poet; 1871-1940)

April Birthdays
If you were born from March 21-April 19, you
are an Aries, the Ram. If you were born from
April 20-May 20, you are a Taurus, the Bull.
Aries live life head first, butting ahead. They
are confident, impulsive, and use courage to
overcome fear. A Taurus is patient, reliable,
industrious, and persistent. They respect
property, avoid falling into debt, and enjoy art.
