COST: $110 per person NEW ITINERARY HOLLAND AMERICA: ICELAND (4 ports of call) & NORWAY (3 ports of call)/ SCOTLAND (2 ports of call) Sunday-Sunday, July 16-30 Join us mid-summer as we explore the cool green ambiance of some of the world’s most spectacular scenery aboard Holland America’s premiere ship ms Zuiderdam. We start and end in COPENHAGEN, DENMARK — one of the easiest European capitals to fall in love with. Its old buildings, cobbled streets and the tower- and turretdotted skyline lend fairy-tale charm to the home of author Hans Christian Andersen. Built on a series of islands, Copenhagen balances tradition and kinetic energy while the Little Mermaid keeps a thoughtful watch over the harbor. Our first port of call is BERGEN, NORWAY. Norway’s second-largest city is one of the most popular ports of call on a cruise up the fjords. Step off the ship into the medieval Bryggen wharf area, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, where evidence of the city’s rich maritime tradition goes back nearly 1,000 years. The city is one of Europe’s oldest settlements and its cobblestone streets and narrow alleyways lead to emeraldgreen parks, medieval cathedrals and stone fortresses that kept enemies at bay centuries ago. ÅLESUND, a quaint fishing town of approximately 45,000 in western Norway, has been called Norway’s most beautiful city. A fire in 1904 destroyed the town. A year later, Norway gained its independence from Sweden, leading to a campaign to build a “Norwegian town” to mark the occasion. Colorful buildings feature castle-like turrets and spires with intricate facades of ornamental flowers, gargoyles and Viking-inspired decorations. Nearby is the Geirangerfjord, another UNESCO World Heritage site, known for its beautiful waterfalls. ICELAND beckons with AKUREYRI and ISAFJOROUR ports before the laid-back and effortlessly cool world’s most northern capitol REYKJAVIK. With geothermal water pumping through its veins and the staggering backdrop of gnarly lava fields, majestic glaciers and rainbow-colored houses, there is no mistaking this iconic landscape. World class museums and art galleries give way to a thriving Nordic cuisine alongside international dining establishments. DJUPIVOGUR is a quiet fishing village with fewer than 500 residents sitting on the eastern coast of Iceland and dating back to the days of the Vikings. What draws visitors to this remote corner of the country is its dramatic natural setting. Located on Berufjörður it is near stunning natural wonders like the Hofellsjökull Glacier and the Valley of Waterfalls. The village itself is home to intriguing sites like Langabúð, a log house built in 1790 that now houses artifacts related to Iceland’s long-held folk traditions, including a belief in “hidden folk” who live in the ancient windswept landscapes of rock, glacier and lava. You can journey to nearby Papey Island and meet some of eastern Iceland’s seabird population including cute and quirky puffins. These birds are so beloved in Iceland they were long the symbol of the national airline and actually outnumber the country’s human population by some 25 to 1. Departing the breathtaking vistas of Iceland we travel to a more familiar landscape and homeland to millions of Americans — SCOTLAND. Our welcome to the Highlands begins at INVERGORDON, wildest and least trammeled region in the entire UK. A trove of Scottish and Celtic history resides here including the world famous legendary Loch Ness Monster. Our final port of call is SOUTH QUEENSFERRY/ EDINBURGH. Our days at sea will be full of options including Holland America’s newest partner in their Culinary Kitchen, 3 the Food Network. There is also an array of entertainment and dining options aboard this moderate size luxury liner (capacity 1,900). This is a grand tour for those travelers who have “seen it all”— destinations you can’t forget even if you can’t pronounce. ONLY UNPACK ONCE; have a diversity of dining options and shore excursions from active to rambling; and some of the most unique and breathtaking scenery in the world. If you haven’t heard of the JACK-O-LANTERN SPECTACULAR that has fast become a Louisville area tradition you are missing a truly remarkable experience. This event was voted the “#1 Halloween Event in the Country” by Country Living Magazine. You will be staggered speechless by the 5,000 professionally carved Jack-O-Lanterns that decorate in wild abundance a 1/4 mile woodland trail in Louisville’s Iroquois Park. More than 30 artists from around the country spend the month in Louisville carving thousands of pumpkins. Each year there is a theme guiding the artists to carve people, places and things easily recognizable to those walking the path. It can take anywhere from 6-14 hours to carve just one pumpkin, making this NEW ITINERARY an all-the-more-incredible effort. And best of all, proceeds go to benefit the Louisville Parks Foundation. But before we are entertained by the artistry of the pumpkins we explore another famous haunt of Louisville — the historic and elegant SEELBACH HOTEL. Our guided tour includes the story of the tragically romantic “Lady in Blue” as well as the famed and infamous who have haunted these halls, including F. Scott Fitzgerald and Al Capone. Our tour starts with a historic treat concocted by the Seelbach’s drinkologist and ends with dinner in the grotto-like elegance of the Rathskeller Room. As our afterdinner pumpkin peaking will end too late for a reasonable journey back to the Queen City, we’ll overnight in LAGRANGE, KY. Next morning we’ll be joined by a local guide to show us the highlights of this quaint and historic little town, including the home of ROB MORRIS, founder of the Eastern Star Lodge. A chance to wander the shops and cafes of LaGrange with time to grab a bite of lunch is included before heading back home.
