Year 6
Term 6 2015
MATHEMATICS
ENGLISH
In maths children will be further developing their
calculation methods as well as applying all of their
maths skills learnt this year to a range of real life
problem solving contexts.
In English, we will be using talk for writing based on the
‘Willow Pattern Story’ which is set in China. Children will
be focusing on developing characterisation by getting
into role. They will write a range of text types including
a diary, letter and a description. They will then be
innovating the story by changing the setting, before
writing their own invented story which follows the same
story pattern.
ART
SCIENCE
In Science we will be looking at
living things and their
environment and at the
classification system in more
detail. Children will learn that
groupings, such as microorganisms, plants and animals can
be subdivided. Through direct
observations where possible, they
will classify animals into
commonly found invertebrates
(such as insects, spiders, snails,
worms) and vertebrates (fish,
amphibians, reptiles, birds and
mammals). They will discuss
reasons why living things are
placed in one group and not
another.
In art children will be drawing a
section from the Willow Pattern
story. This design will then be
transferred to a 3D plate or pot
which they will make out of salt
dough. They will use watercolours
to paint their design.
DT
Children will be designing a talking
textile based on a memory they
have from their time spent at St
John’s. They will learn many
different sewing techniques before
applying their skills to create a
layered textile of their design. This
will be completed during arts week.
COMPUTING
In computing we will be
developing the interface for an
APP.
We will also continue to translate
questions into effective search
criteria and look at information
from different viewpoints and
analyse resources.
PE
In PE we will be developing
ball skills within games
including tennis.
RE
 In RE we will consider the
question: Can we know what
God is like? Raise and suggest
answers to questions of
meaning, purpose and truth.
PSHE
In PSHE we will be learning about
relationships and puberty.
MUSIC
All children will be performing our
end of year production of ‘Porridge’
involving singing four part songs.
FRENCH

recognise and read out a few
familiar words and phrases - e.g.
from stories and rhymes
the date
the weather
