School Health Service
The School Health Team:
All schools have access to a Community
Paediatrician and School Nurse.
Support staff includes School Nurse Assistants/
Screeners and Audiometricians, who undertake
height, weight, vision and hearing screening in
schools.
All School Nurses have specific training and
experience in children’s development and their
physical and emotional health.
The School Health Team works closely with
Family Doctors, Health Visitors, Hospital
Paediatricians, the Child and Adolescent Mental
Health Service, Hearing and Eye Clinics,
Hospital Specialists, Community Dental
Services and Therapists - Physiotherapy,
Speech and Language and Occupational
Therapy.
Healthy children have a better chance
of learning
The School Nurse works in partnership with children/
young people, their families/carers, teachers, and
other agencies, offering help and support with any
emotional or physical concerns you or they may have.
Starting School
This is an important change in the life of
your child and the School Health Services
aim to ensure that this is as smooth and
easy as possible.
The School Nursing service is available
throughout the time your child is at school to
discuss any concerns you may have. These could
include specific medical concerns, which might
require specialist support in school, problems
with speech, vision or hearing.
Screening and immunisations will be offered in
accordance with local and national policies which
may change from time to time. This means that
most children will have their eyes tested and
height and weight measured in Reception class
and height and weight again in year 6 but may
include further checks at other stages.
If your child is in reception
It is important that you complete the enclosed
health questionnaire and return this form to
the school as soon as possible.
School Health Services
You may ask to see a School Nurse at any time
whilst your child is in school. The Nurse may
also be involved in your child’s health education
programmes and will offer drop-in sessions or
appointment, for pupils in secondary school.
The vision screening undertaken in school does
not replace the thorough eye examination
available free to all children at the opticians and
which should be accessed on a regular basis.
Head lice is a common problem among children.
Please ensure that you check your child’s head
regularly and contact the School Nursing
Service for advice if necessary.
