Support staff includes School Nurse Assistants/ Screeners and Audiometricians, who undertake height, weight, vision and hearing screening in schools. All School Nurses have specific training and experience in children’s development and their physical and emotional health. The School Health Team works closely with Family Doctors, Health Visitors, Hospital Paediatricians, the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service, Hearing and Eye Clinics, Hospital Specialists, Community Dental Services and Therapists - Physiotherapy, Speech and Language and Occupational Therapy. Healthy children have a better chance of learning The School Nurse works in partnership with children/ young people, their families/carers, teachers, and other agencies, offering help and support with any emotional or physical concerns you or they may have. Starting School This is an important change in the life of your child and the School Health Services aim to ensure that this is as smooth and easy as possible. The School Nursing service is available throughout the time your child is at school to discuss any concerns you may have. These could include specific medical concerns, which might require specialist support in school, problems with speech, vision or hearing. Screening and immunisations will be offered in accordance with local and national policies which may change from time to time. This means that most children will have their eyes tested and height and weight measured in Reception class and height and weight again in year 6 but may include further checks at other stages. If your child is in reception It is important that you complete the enclosed health questionnaire and return this form to the school as soon as possible. School Health Services You may ask to see a School Nurse at any time whilst your child is in school. The Nurse may also be involved in your child’s health education programmes and will offer drop-in sessions or appointment, for pupils in secondary school. The vision screening undertaken in school does not replace the thorough eye examination available free to all children at the opticians and which should be accessed on a regular basis. Head lice is a common problem among children. Please ensure that you check your child’s head regularly and contact the School Nursing Service for advice if necessary.
