A Word From The President
A full summer of events are taking place both on the
lake and regionally. Everyone waited a long time for
warm summer days as they really promote a summer
of fun on the lake. There’s a full schedule of events in
here. The Association supports and promotes lakewide events -- the boat parade, the lake-wide picnic
(both on July 5th ) and the association Annual Meeting
on July 12th at 9 am at the Silver Creek Twp hall.
Attending the meeting will be Jennifer Jones, the lake
management consultant and Deputy Clint Roach to
discuss lake safety. Come join us at the meeting, this
is your chance to ask the experts the questions that
have been on your mind. Anyone with an interest in
Magician Lake should be at the Annual Meeting. See
the details in here.
Our Legacy
I frequently talk about the lake legacy we leave
behind. The building blocks of this are many- fold.
They involve the health of the lake which means the
cleanliness, minimizing invasive weeds, the shoreline,
the environment, the safety and the fun. The fun helps
make up the happy memories left behind. Your kids,
grandkids, your spouse, friends and parents will talk
about these days on the lake forever because they are
indelible. Remember when you were a kid—the happy
memories that stick in your mind of fun with family
and friends. I’m sure our kids and grandkids in
particular will think of these days as though they
existed for decades even though it may be for a shorter
time.
If you want to see what a Magician Lake legacy in the
making looks like this is it…She may for the rest of her
life talk about fishing with grandpa. Maybe it only
happened for a week a year but hopefully to the little
person, it will seem like forever…..

Boating Certificate Class Schedule is
Cancelled
The previously published boating-safety certificate
class schedule has been cancelled. The head of the
Cass County Marine Patrol, Deputy Clint Roach
reported that potential boaters have been taking the
certificate program online and have not been showing
up at the class locations. To take the class at home on
your own time, there are two approved online class
certificate sites:
http://www.BoatEd.com
http://www.BoaterExam.com.
If you have any questions or would like further
information about the Marine Division please contact
the Marine Patrol office at (269) 445-1225. The
Marine Patrol uses a combination of boats and jet
skis to patrol the lakes of Cass County. Marine Patrol
Deputies enforce all marine laws..
MLIA Annual Meeting
Magician Lake Improvement Association
Annual Meeting, Saturday, July 12th at 9 am.
Don’t miss it. Anyone with an interest in
Magician Lake should be there.
Magician Lake Improvement Association is registered
with the State of Michigan as a not for profit
corporation. Officers are: Jim Sullivan, President,
Craig McCoy Vice-president, Bill Boehnlein,
Secretary, Dick Morey, Treasurer, and Cynthia Polk
Muller, Jim Dudley, Nick Barnes and Dan Kuruzar,
trustees.
counter-clockwise direction around the lake. No
exceptions. Boats going in the opposite direction may
have a head-on with another craft. People are
distracted when pulling tubes or skiers and an accident
like this can cause a disaster. The most frequently seen
are PWC’s and fast boats from fishing tournaments
launched from the public boat ramp but there are
others. Reminder: Anyone born after 12/31/78, MUST
have a boating safety certificate to ride a personal
watercraft. And a new law last year (2013), anyone
born after July 1st must have a boating safety
certificate to operate any vessel alone. For the details
of Michigan Boater Safety Laws, contact Michigan

made up the summer population. The history of many
locations on the lake go back before 1900. Maple Island
residents for example created their association in 1895.

Postcard collector R.L. "Rick" Rasmussen turned to Floyd
Jerdon of Dowagiac for vintage images of Sister Lakes for
the first pictorial book ever published about the 11 lakes.
The result is "Sister Lakes," available from Arcadia
Publishing at www.arcadiapublishing.com or (888) 3132665), at amazon.com and at area bookstores. In 1903 an
aerial photo was taken of the west end of Magician Lake,
where the 3 islands are prominent.
Voting in Michigan
Remember, if you are a Michigan resident, the primary
is August 5th. Polls are open 7:00a.m.- 8:00p.m. There
are 2 proposals and a state candidate choice.
EWM Treatment In Keeler
If you live in Keeler Township, you should know that
significant progress has been made in reducing EWM in
the treated portions of Keeler but we are behind the Silver
Creek portion because that was started 2 years earlier.
Also, not all portions of Keeler were treated—there are
only 80 homeowners in Keeler and some have not sent in
their money for treatment. If you have not supported the
program so far, surely it is an oversight but this is not fair
to your neighbors who have worked to support the effort.
Our Magician Lake is a beautiful lake and we must all
take care of it. For the upcoming year of treatment, please

Watercraft Safety
When a watercraft stalls, the steering is gone. We see
folks heading and side slipping their personal
watercrafts toward docks and rafts. It may look like a
fun way to splash folks but it's dangerous for the rider
and the on-lookers. REMEMBER;NO POWER NO
CONTROL.
There must be many new boaters on the lake since quite a
few go the wrong direction. All boats must travel in a

A shoreline
Another vessel
Any moored or anchored vessel
A dock or raft
Any marked swimming area or person(s) in the
water"
This was evidenced on Round Lake, two tubers were
severely injured when a boat was towing 3 tubes.
Turning caused the outside tube to cross the wake and
collide with the other 2 tubes causing them to abruptly
swing towards shore and collide with a wooden raft.
We’ve also seen inexperienced boat operators swing a
person on a tube wide in a “donut.” If done too close
to onshore or floating objects, the towed person can
swing out and strike these causing severe internal
injuries, multiple abrasions, facial lacerations, and
severe head trauma. Save your child or friend, drive
carefully—be smart.
Local History
For those new to the area, there is a great book that
addresses the history of the Sister Lakes area which
includes Magician Lake. It is made up of age-old
postcards that show area resorts and many personal
properties. What fun to see the way it all looked way back
when farm fields came down to the lake in many places
and people from surrounding towns, Indiana and Illinois

The Boater’s 100 ft Rule
According to the Michigan Handbook on boater safety
Improper Distance is not maintaining a proper
distance while operating a vessel or towing a person.
To maintain a proper distance when you are operating
at greater than "slow, no wake speed" (except in
channels that are not posted), the vessel or persons
being towed must not be within 100 feet of:
