The zoomorphic masks have large upturned eyes elaborately patterned, each bordered in the same way as the symplified anthropomorphic masks. The drilling of the cong is similar to most Liangzhu cong, drilled from both ends and showing a slight ridge where it meets. The jade of exquisite green tones. Height: 25cm Width: 6.5cm -7cm Provenance: Important “Queensland Collection” In the history of jade carving in China, the cong is the most impressive of the ritual type jades produced. After the neolithic era the designs became more decorative, but cong were still a symbol of elitism. The original purpose of the cong has been lost with time, but there has been conjecture with regard to its use. Cong and bi are the most significant of the ritualistic jades. It is thought that the square shape of the cong represents the earth and the circular disc shape of the bi represents Heaven. The cong in fact embodies both shapes and is thought by some to be a means of directing qi energy, a means of communicating with higher forces, a spiritual passage between the living and the dead, and perhaps warding off evil. Shamanism played an important role in every facet of neolithic life, and no doubt dictated the ritual and ceremonial use of these objects. du Plessis International Fine Art Auctioneers www.duplessis.com.au 94 LATE 18TH/EARLY 19TH CENTURY FRENCH GILTWOOD AND PAINTED SALON TABLE Of oval form fitted with branco verado marble top and set on turned tapering spiral reeded legs with intricately carved stretcher 95 FINE NUDE STUDY BY CONSTANTIN ADRÉEVITCH TERECHKOVITCH “Jeune femme Nathalie” Watercolour & wax crayon Signed lower left Size: 18cm x 23cm Provenance: Lawrence Abeln Collection. Rapidly worked, plein-air and bathed in colour and light, McCubbin emphasises the fence line and the dense foliage of the thicket of trees whilst drawing the viewers eye towards the encroaching Melbourne skyline. Anne Galbally suggests “Around the turn of the century his work began to show a new emphasis, moving away from the idea of a picture as a vehicle for telling a story towards an absorbtion with the elements of picture-making for their own sake. The size of his canvases was reduced whilst the pictorial elements of colour brushwork and texture began to free themselves from a strictly representational relationship to the real world. In his late works Mc Cubbin’s art is an art of joy and a celebration of the basic fundamentals of picture -making.” Loc. cit. pg. 142-143 Galbally, A., Frederick McCubbin, Huchinson, Melbourne, 1981 Frederick McCubbin (1855-1917) Australian Impressionist Painter, Born Melbourne. Studied art at the Artisan School of Design and later with Eugene Von Guerard at the National Gallery of Victoria School. In 1885 with Tom Roberts he established an artists camp at Box Hill, the precursor to the Heidelberg School of which he was a founding father. He was inspired by the poems of Henry Lawson in much of his early work and later adopted the European Impressionist style of painting having been influenced by Tom Roberts. In 1907 he visited Europe. He was appointed to the National Gallery of Victoria School from 1886 until 1917. His work is represented in all major Australian Gallery collections.
