The first 150 years of the Tang dynasty provided fertile ground
for development of the arts with the opening of China’s
frontiers giving the capital Chang’an a cosmopolitan air. Near
Eastern and Indian influences created innovative forms of art
and the Chinese were quick to use them to produce styles and
patterns to suit their own tastes

Of hammered silver with repousse, chased and ring
punched decoration and gilding. The decoration
comprising two phoenix as well as the unusually
large proportions of the container indicates that it
would have belonged to a lady of high status. The
Chinese phoenix is a mythical bird known as
Fenghuang symbolising joy, peace and prosperity
associated with the South and Summer. The
phoenix is also the symbol of the Empress
Tang dynasty 618 - 906 C.E.
The provided information we have is that the set of
seals had been buried with other items during a time
of conflict in China.
The dark green or spinach green Nephrite jade used
for the boxes is from the Karakash River.
The Boxes are hexagonal in shape with a floral motif
carved in very fine low relief within each of the
surrounding framed panels. Inside each box is a seal
carved in a fine grained pale green jade. The pale
jade of the seals shows considerable dissolution
most likely due to being enclosed in a wet
environment. The lid of each box is deep and
recessed to fit the box perfectly, and the top is
carved in a pierce worked pattern of two birds
amongst flowers and leaves

Reliquaries were used to hold sarira, a relic of the
Buddha. A relic could be symbolised by something
precious such as a pearl.
Gold and silver deposits were rare in ancient China and the
attractive metals were used mainly for inlays and decorations
on bronzes. However, it was the prosperity of the Tang
dynasty which saw the greatest development in gold and silver
working, hence it has been dubbed the
“Golden Age” of China.
A notable example of Reliquaries was on exhibition at the
British Museum in 1999 of “Buried Treasures from China’s
Golden Ages”. Excavated in 1985 from the Qingshan temple

JADE CONG
The fine incised line work decorating this cong sets
it apart from most others produced during this
period. The lines are close together forming
intricate patterns and the cong composed of nine
layers of masks alternating between
anthropomorphic and zoomorphic patterns. The
anthropomorphic masks are crowned by two bands
horizontally engraved with a fine pattern between
them. The round eyes have a small dash engraved
at each side and the masks have a patterned border
running from the sides of the mouth up to the
crown on each side. The zoomorphic masks have
large upturned eyes elaborately patterned, each
bordered in the same way as the symplified
anthropomorphic masks. The drilling of the cong is
similar to most Liangzhu cong, drilled from both
ends and showing a slight ridge where it meets.
The jade of exquisite green tones.
Height: 25cm
Width: 6.5cm -7cm
Provenance: Important “Queensland Collection”
In the history of jade carving in China, the cong is the most
impressive of the ritual type jades produced. After the
neolithic era the designs became more decorative, but cong
were still a symbol of elitism. The original purpose of the cong
has been lost with time, but there has been conjecture with
regard to its use. Cong and bi are the most significant of the
ritualistic jades. It is thought that the square shape of the
cong represents the earth and the circular disc shape of the bi
represents Heaven. The cong in fact embodies both shapes
and is thought by some to be a means of directing qi energy, a
means of communicating with higher forces, a spiritual
passage between the living and the dead, and perhaps
warding off evil. Shamanism played an important role in every
facet of neolithic life, and no doubt dictated the ritual and
ceremonial use of these objects.

FREDERICK MCCUBBIN
AUSTRALIAN IMPRESSIONIST
LANDSCAPE OIL
‘A View of South Yarra C.1910’
Size: 19cm x 29.5cm
This work illustrates the Australian impressionist master’s
vibrant palette comprising rich rose toned pinks, yellow ochres,
deep chromatic greens, ultramarine blues and chalky opaque
creams. Rapidly worked, plein-air and bathed in colour and
light, McCubbin emphasises the fence line and the dense
foliage of the thicket of trees whilst drawing the viewers eye
towards the encroaching Melbourne skyline. Anne Galbally
suggests “Around the turn of the century his work began to
show a new emphasis, moving away from the idea of a picture
as a vehicle for telling a story towards an absorbtion with the
elements of picture-making for their own sake. The size of his
canvases was reduced whilst the pictorial elements of colour
brushwork and texture began to free themselves from a strictly
representational relationship to the real world. In his late
works Mc Cubbin’s art is an art of joy and a celebration of the
basic fundamentals of picture -making.”
Loc. cit. pg. 142-143 Galbally, A., Frederick McCubbin,
Huchinson, Melbourne, 1981
Frederick McCubbin (1855-1917) Australian Impressionist
Painter, Born Melbourne. Studied art at the Artisan School of
Design and later with Eugene Von Guerard at the National
Gallery of Victoria School. In 1885 with Tom Roberts he
established an artists camp at Box Hill, the precursor to the
Heidelberg School of which he was a founding father. He was
inspired by the poems of Henry Lawson in much of his early
work and later adopted the European Impressionist style of
painting having been influenced by Tom Roberts. In 1907 he
visited Europe. He was appointed to the National Gallery of
Victoria School from 1886 until 1917. His work is represented
in all major Australian Gallery collections.
