We have a new computer system at
the Temple. We are now using IBM
compatible compu ters, and have
purchased a special software system
designed specifically for Temples.
This new system will allow us to do
your Temple bills "in-house", as well
as track all donations, gifts, and
contributions to the Temple and our
Funds. We hope you noticed the new
look of your Temple dues statement.
The new system also has an
extensive data base program. This
will be extremely helpful for all of our
Committeess in their work, and help
our Religious School as well. It will
also allow us to do both our accounts
receivable and accounts payable,
payroll, and provide detailed financial
reports for our Temple Board.
The new system will also be used
for Yarzheits, the Temple Calendar,
all word processing, and more.
Of course, learning any new system
takes time. Please bear with us if we
make a mistake.
A special thanks to Laura and
Jimmy Reiser for all their time and
efforts in setting up our new system,
and to all who have helped: Jeff
Passis, Dick Brenner, Steve Cickay.
And a extra special thanks to those .
who have donated to the Temple the
computers and printers we are now
using: Frank Dottore, Jeff Passis, Paul
Levy, Mort Goldstein, Michael Kaplan.
We could still use an IBM
compatible 386 or higher with a color
monitor. If you have such a machine,
and are no longer using it, we should
be most grateful for your tax
deductible donation.

Ushers Needed for High Holidays
Our ushers, all volunteer members of our congregation, perform a
wonderful service during our High Holidays. They offer a warm and friendly
welcome to all who came to worship with us for the Holidays. They also help
us find seats, and are there in care of emergency.
We invite everyone in our congregation to help usher during the holidays.
If you would like to volunteer to join our usher corps, please call the Temple
Office, or Herb Levin, chair of our Usher Committee, (215) 493-0544.

In cooperation with Mercer Medical Center, we have installed a new
electronic gate at the entrance to our parking lot on Bellevue Avenue. The
lot is used by the Hospital weekdays; we anticipate using it during weekday
hours. The gate will automatically open when you pull into the right side of
the driveway. There is no need to rush; the gate will remain open for you to
drive into the lot.

Selichot Program & Services
Saturday, August 27th
"Memory, Teshuvah, Forgiving" is
the title of our Selichot Program,
Saturday, August 27, beginning at 8
pm at the Temple. We will view the
film The Pawnbroker and discuss how
its powerful message relates to the
themes of the Holidays.
Following our discussion, we will
move upstairs to the Sanctuary for our
brief Selichot Service.
Selichot, a Hebrew word meaning
forgiveness, refers to the special
penitential prayers recited by Jews
during the Rosh Hashanah season.
Reform congregations usually observe
Selichot on the Saturday night just
prior to Rosh Hashanah, a solemn and
fitting preparation for the ten days of
reflection and self-examination.
Because Selichot i s recited on
Saturday night, we begin with
Havdalah, the ritual that separates
the Sabbath from the six days of the
week. Selichot separates the High
Holy Days from the rest of the year in
much the same way.
Please join us for our Selichot
program.

OF HONOR ------
Throughout its history, Har Sinai has provided for the spiritual, educational and cultural needs of each
generation. Our Temple will remain strong only as long as our members continue to provide a solid base of financial
support. A significant portion of our dues income comes from the almost 60 generous Temple families who
participate in our Committee of Honor. These are the members of our Congregation who have voluntarily increased
their annual dues commitment to $1600 a family, and $900 for a single member.
The generous support of the Committee of Honor, whose names appear on a plaque found in the Tree of Life
Room outside the Social Hall, provides the additional income the Temple needs to fund Our current operating
expenses. This support also enables the Temple to assist those unable to pay our basic dues. It allows us to continue
our policy of never turning away a member from our Congregation because of financial need. In these difficult
economic times, more than ever, we depend on those members who are willing to join our Committee of Honor.
If you would like to become a member of the Committee of Honor, please contact the Temple office, the rabbi, or
the officers of the Congregation. We thank you for your support.

RELIGIOUS SCHOOL REPORTS
-------
by Ann Kanarek
------
Make Reading A Part Of Your Summer!
Now that school activities are winding down and you are vacationing and
relaxing a little, I would like to suggest that reading be part of your summer.
KIDS: Why don't you get a head start on our author for Jewish Book Month
in November... ESTHER HAU TZIG. Among Ms. Hautzig's books is her award
winning autobiography, The Endless Steppe. Also highly recommended for the
entire family is A Gift For Mama and her latest book, highly acclaimed in a full
page article in the New York Times Book Review is Riches, a beautiful story of
life, love and spirituality.
ADULTS: Looking for some good things to read over the summer? May I
Suggest 40 Things You Can Do To Save The Jewish People. The author, Joel
Grishaver, offers some really practical ideas for parents who want to raise "good
enough" Jewish kids to ensure that the Jewish People continue and thrive...and
The Kosher Pig And Other Curiosities Of Modern Jewish Life by Richard J.
Israel. This is a collection of essays focusing on the inherent contradiction of
being both a traditional Jew and a liberal, modem human being.
Religious School Registration
Even as we are all enjoying this relaxing season, work at the Temple goes on
as Religious School programs are being planned and registration is
underway. You have already received your registration forms. In an effort
to keep the class sizes equal in both early and late sessions, registration will
be taken on a first-come, first-served basis. Please fill out and return the
registration form and emergency form as soon as possible. A complete
Religious School packet containing class assignments, class lists, the
Re l i g i o u s Sc h o l Cale n d a r , and o t h e r i n f o r ma t i o n w i l l b e sent to
REGISTERED STUDEN TS later in the summer.
Pre-School
Holiday
Programming
We are busy planning a series of
four or five special holiday workshops
and programs for pre-schoolers and
their parents and/or grandparents.
These programs will be open to both
Temple members and their friends.
We also want to invite non-Temple
members who have children of pre
school age. We believe that this first
introduction to Har Sinai for non
members may be just the experience
they need to consider affiliating.
If you have a pre-schooler at home,
please be sure we know it! An
invitation describing our upcoming
year of pre-school programming will
be in the mail in late July. To help us
plan effic iently for the upcoming
season, we will be asking that you pre
register for all classes at a nominal fee
of $15 per family for the year. And if
you have unaffiliated friends who
have pre-schoolers, please send us
their names so we can be sure to
invite them also.
Great Books
Reading Group
Do you like to read? Do you like
discussing the book you are reading
with others? Then you would be a
perfect member of our now forming
Great Books Reading Group. Led by
May Medoff and the Rabbi, our group
will meet approximately monthly and
discuss books of common interest or
current concern, fiction and non
fiction. Members of the group will
decide what we will read.
To join, or learn more about our
group, please call May at 609-7710816, or Rabbi Straus. Happy reading!

SISTERHOOD NEWS AND VIEWS
------ Why Sisterhood Dues Are Important
Thanks to all the Sisterhood members for their 1993-94
dues. Your continued support helps Har Sinai in so many
ways. Once again, Sisterhood dues appears on your
Temple dues statement. There are some women who
believe that, because they don't have the time to be active
in Sisterhood activities, there is no point in joining. They
see Sisterhood as just another auxiliary group within the
Temple, one from which they would derive little benefit.
The truth is that Sisterhood membership dues benefit
every one of us at Har Sinai by enhancing the quality of
synagogue life.
What do Sisterhood dues provide within the Har Sinai
community? They pay for the upkeep of the kitchen,
flowers on the pulpit, and help sponsor our Oneg on
Shabbat. They pay for special treats for the Religious
School students during all our holidays and milk for the
Social Action dinners for the homeless. They provide High
Holy Day prayerbooks for our Confirmation class. These
are but a few examples of Sisterhood's contributions.
There's more! Through our Sisterhood dues and fund
raising efforts, we contribute to the greater community.
---- Kol Nidre Appeal
.
Internationally, our dues support the Jewish Braille
Institute and the World Union for Progressive Judaism. A
portion of our dues is used to purchase uniongrams, which
support scholarships for rabbinical students all over the
world. Sisterhood members can and should take great
pride in knowing that they have contributed to all of these
worthy causes.
Sisterhood exists at the very center of our Jewish lives,
contributing quietly and generously to every facet of our
Har Sinai community. And, it is your Sisterhood dues that
make it possible. So, when your Temple dues statement
arrives this summer, please remember that your support is
a reflection of your commitment to the quality of life at
Har Sinai Temple, whether you are "active" or not.
New Years Cards Now Available From Sisterhood
Sisterhood is now selling beautiful collections of New
Years cards with a variety of reproductions of lovely and
meaningful works o f a r t on the front c o v e r for the
incredible price of 10 cards for $5.00. They may be
purchased at the Temple or, to order, call the Temple office
at (609) 392-7143.

Again this year, the Board of Trustees of Har Sinai Hebrew Congregation
has approved an annual appeal to raise funds for needed capital improvements
and to increase substantially the growth of our Endowment Fund.
The 1993 Appeal generated the income to underwrite the cost of the
installation of our new security gate.
Contributions made in response to this Appeal will be divided equally
between capital improvement projects approved by the Board and the
Endowment Fund. The allocation to the Endowment Fund reflects our
commitment to the future financial well-being of Har Sinai as a vital,
progressive Reform congregation.
Read the Bulletin for future updates.
Help Our Summer Membership Drive
Har Sinai is very proud of its programs, services and Religious School.
Please tell people you know and love, relatives and friends, that Har Sinai
would be a wonderful congregation for them to join. The Membership
Committee, with your cooperation, would appreciate the opportunity to talk to
these people. We want to tell them about our exciting Temple and everything
we have to ofTer. PLEASE CONTACT THE TEMPLE OFFICE WITH THEIR
NAMES AND TELEPHONE NUMBERS.
