From our beginnings as a grassroots movement established by a partnership between volunteers and local McDonald’s, the growth and success locally, nationally and internationally is miraculous. The reality of having a child sick and in the hospital can be incredibly overwhelming to parents and siblings. Ronald McDonald House is able to provide these families a bit of stability in the midst of unthinkable circumstances. Every night, hundreds of moms, dads, brothers and sisters stay with us in the House, only steps away from the hospital. Families can make the House their home-away-from-home for as long as their child is being treated in the hospital. When a child is hospitalized, the healing power of having family nearby is beyond measure. It is this heartfelt purpose that both drives and defines RMHC of Denver, the charity has served thousands of families in their deepest times of need. We know our success and growth would not have been possible without the vision of our Founders, the involvement of our community and each gift that has been so lovingly given. For that, we offer heartfelt thanks for the confidence in our mission, programs and services and for helping to support our mission of keeping families close all year long. The impetus for my involvement is Sky High Hope Camp, a RMHC program that supports children with cancer and their siblings. My daughters, Allison and Emily, have been faithful and active attendees of the camp since 2008. As the camp motto goes, “Until there’s a cure – THERE’S CAMP!” This also accurately captures my involvement with RMHC. The staff, at both Sky High Hope Camp and the houses, are incredibly dedicated to their mission which is reflected in a well-run and fiscally responsible nonprofit organization. Fortunately, my office is directly next to the Denver House, so I see daily the need for these houses to support the families in our community. I can promise no family wants to use the services of RMHC, but its presence fills a critical gap for families in a time of great stress. A great way to get involved in the house is by simply volunteering; an example would be kitchen or front desk help. As the nephew of the Chair Emertia of the Dallas Ronald McDonald House, the charity has always been a part of my family and close to my heart. When my wife and I started giving of our time, talent and treasure here in Denver, we of course chose to support Ronald McDonald House Charities of Denver. That was nearly 30 years ago and I’ve loved every minute of it. As an active Board Member, I spend many days in the House volunteering my time and have seen first-hand the love, comfort and support that we provide to families at a very difficult time in their lives. One never knows if they might need our services, but all are relieved to find us when they do. There are so many ways to be involved here. During my time, I’ve helped in many areas including providing handyman services, chairing the House Operations Committee, helping to set-up and clean up our annual fundraising gala and working the grill at a barbeque cook-off. I’d encourage you to visit our website or give a House Manager a call to learn more about how you can be involved. Like me, I’m sure you won’t regret it! DENNIS HU I became involved with Ronald McDonald House in 2000 when I went into the House in Georgia to make a donation on behalf of a friend for their birthday. A staff member asked me if I’d like to learn more and the next thing I knew, I was helping with house maintenance and then cooking meals and then spending time with families and other events. I was hooked! Since then, I have stayed involved with the charity as I have moved around the country in New York and now in Denver, mainly because the House’s objectives match with my personal affinity to help families and children. In addition, all of the people that I have met and work with associated with the charity are wonderful people who will be lifelong friends. A great way to get involved in the House is to volunteer any amount of time that works for you. You can cook dinners, help clean up play areas or just spend some time with families listening to their stories and providing an outlet for them to share. At Ronald McDonald House, there are multiple ways to get involved at various levels of commitment. Start out small, think big and tell others. PEGGI HUNT Whether they are here for a day or a year, our Houses provide vital services to families for whom Denver’s world-class children’s hospitals are a godsend. That’s why I have given time to Ronald McDonald House for more than 20 years. It is an honor and a thrill to see how my work with our Houses support families when they need it the most. While our Houses support families who travel to our world-class hospitals, Ronald McDonald House Charities of Denver also serves local children through our medical and dental CareMobiles, by providing scholarships to area teens, and by conducting a summer camp for cancer patients and their siblings. As guests arrived at the Sheraton Denver Downtown, they were transported into the pages of the well-known storybook with a silent auction staged in an area reminiscent of an outdoor market in Italy. They shopped and sipped on cocktails courtesy of Tito’s Handmade Vodka, beer from Lagunitas Brewing Co. and wine donated by Magnolia Hotel. A delicious Italian dinner was served in the ballroom which had been transformed into Tony’s Restaurant, a replica of the favorite dining spot of Lady and The Tramp. After, a live auction full of hard-toget items like a Los Angeles trip featuring tickets to The Ellen DeGeneres show and seats in a luxury box for a Denver Broncos game, helped raise over $170,000. Denver (303) 832-2667 Aurora (720) 324-2400 www.rmhc-denver.org Radiothon & Light The Houses The Denver Ronald McDonald House was hoppin’ on December 1 as we took to the airwaves to share our message for 12-hours during our annual Ronald McDonald House/KOSI 101.1 radiothon. This fundraising event provided the opportunity for listeners across the metro area to learn about the House straight from our families (the group that tells our story best) and to call in and pledge their support. The day, filled with laughter, tears, wonder and amazement, raised $363,000 for the families of Ronald McDonald House. Many thanks to dedicated staff of on-air and behind the scenes workers from KOSI, the cadre of volunteers who worked that day, and to these sponsors, without whom the day couldn’t have been a success: Children’s Hospital Colorado Kuni Honda Rocky Mountain Hospital for Children Longmont Dairy Eggland’s Best EZ Money Fortrust Data Nelnet Polidori Sausage Tolin Mechanical DECEMBER S M 31 S M 5 6 T NOVEMBER T W T F 7 S 1 2 3 8 9 10 11 NEW YEAR’S EVE JANUARY 2018 S M T W T F 4 12 13 14 15 16 17 18 W 7 3 4 5 F 1 2 8 9 10 11 12 13 S 1 S 6 Host a new toy drive for Santa’s Workshop at the House 2 14 15 16 17 18 19 20 19 20 21 22 23 24 25 21 22 23 24 25 26 27 26 27 28 29 30 28 29 30 31 3 4 10 11 12 18 19 17 T Colorado Gives Day – make your donation at coloradogives.org Fun Fact: Santa has visited our Houses every year since we opened in 1979 5 6 7 8 9 13 14 15 16 20 21 22 23 Wishlist Wednesday: bring laundry detergent to the House FIRST DAY OF WINTER 24 CHRISTMAS EVE 25 26 27 28 29 30 Help Light The Houses by sending in your contribution today CHRISTMAS DAY RONALD MCDONALD HOUSE CHARITIES OF DENVER, INC. Denver (303) 832-2667 Aurora (720) 324-2400 www.rmhc-denver.org Neighborly Love Whether traveling across mountains or plains, nearly half of the families who stay with us are from outlying area of Colorado. Whatever their prognosis, these families are forever bonded by the reality of being away from home with a hospitalized child. Home may look very different to them – a cottage in a ski town versus a ranch home in a rural area – but, within our walls, these families often discover true friendship. They are neighbors now and forever. And, as the saying goes, a good neighbor is a priceless treasure.
