BIOGRAPHICAL/HISTORICAL NOTE
Dr. D. Warren Brickell (1824-1881) of New Orleans was a nationally known gynecologist, founder
and dean of the New Orleans School of Medicine, and editor of numerous medical journals. His
interest in public affairs is reflected in his newspaper articles on political reform, published during
Reconstruction.
SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE
Papers consist principally of newspaper clippings of articles by Brickell and miscellaneous
political broadsides. Topics include the activities of the New Orleans Citizens' Association; the
Unification Movement; participation of the White League in their opposition to the Reconstruction
government in Louisiana; the disputed state elections of 1872 and 1876; the Louisiana Lottery
Company; the 1879 state constitution; and subsequent tax issues. Also present are letters of
condolence regarding the death of Brickell's brother, James N. Brickell, a New Orleans attorney;
and a reprint of a memorial obituary dedicated to D. Warren Brickell published in the New Orleans
Medical and Surgical Journal (1882). Newspaper clippings and a pamphlet related to the White
League removed from the Daniel Warren Brickell Scrapbook are included with the papers.
