is the leading U.S. organization committed to
deepening mutual understanding between the
United States and Japan in a global context.
Now in its second century, the Society serves
audiences across the United States and abroad
through innovative programs in arts and culture,
public policy, business, language and education.
The Mary Livingston Griggs and Mary Griggs Burke Foundation awarded Japan
Society Gallery a $2 million grant, followed by an additional gift of $2.5 million in
fall 2016. Both grants will be used to establish the Mary Griggs Burke Endowment
Fund for exhibition development as well as public and educational programming
for audiences of all ages. In fall 2015, Japan Society Gallery showcased For a New
World to Come: Experiments in Japanese Art and Photography, 1968-1979, which
Ken Johnson of The New York Times called “fascinating and illuminating.” The
spring exhibition, In the Wake: Japanese Photographers Respond to 3/11 , opened
on the fifth anniversary of the Great East Japan Earthquake.
Film programming significantly increased this past year with 66 screenings
and events. The 10th anniversary of the JAPAN CUTS film festival had an
unprecedented lineup of guest filmmakers and stars— Lily Franky and Atsuko
Maeda, among others—with 29 feature films and dozens of shorts, almost all
screening in NYC for the first time.
The Business & Policy Program hosted 27 corporate lectures and events,
welcoming high-level officials from Bank of Japan, including Governor Haruhiko
Kuroda and Deputy Governor Hiroshi Nakaso, who talked about Japan’s economy
under quantitative and qualitative monetary easing. Women on the Rise , a new
series, focused on the advancement of women in the public and private sectors.
The Talks+ Program held 19 diverse lectures and hands-on workshops, receiving
mentions in major media including C-SPAN, The New York Times, InStyle
Magazine, The New Yorker and Architectural Digest . Among the notable guests
were actor George Takei, kabuki star Ebizo Ichikawa XI and architect Sou
Fujimoto. One of the most exciting accomplishments was the Okinawa series,
co-organized with Okinawa Prefectural Government.
In the 20th anniversary year of the Education & Family Program, 10 U.S. students
were selected to travel to Japan, and 10 Japanese students traveled to New York,
to participate in the Japan Society Junior Fellows Leadership Program. They
met with leading professionals, including former Senator John “Jay” Rockefeller
IV, stayed with a host family, visited historical sites and completed a research
project. Ten U.S. educators traveled on the three-week Educators’ Study Tour to
