Abstract Sculpture

Abstract Sculpture
You may have seen this sculpture down by the bay. If you haven’t,
stroll down there now!
•
What did you notice first? As you walk around the sculpture,
what new things do you notice? Try sketching the sculpture
from different angles.
•
Can you tell by looking what material was used to make this
sculpture?
•
How do you think this sculpture looks as the sunlight changes
throughout the day?
•
If you were to give this sculpture a title, what would you call it?
Sculpture is artwork in real space, in 3D,
rather than painted or drawn on paper.
Not all artwork needs to represent
something you recognize – sometimes
artwork is just exploring ideas, like color,
line or space. This kind of art is called
abstract.
Some sculpture is made from forms, or
shapes being put together. This would be
called an additive sculpture.
Others may have material taken away –
for example, carving a block out of stone.
This is subtractive sculpture.
Which do you think Colossus is? Which do
you think your sculpture is?
