Mr. Dick, Mrs. Miller, Mrs. Neitzel, Mr. McCoy Social Studies -- Mr. McCoy Welcome to History! This course is designed to help students understand how events or actions of the past help influence and shape the current and future cultures. This course involves the study of major historical events, cultural trends and advancement of thought and civilization of both Kansas and the United States. We will compare and contrast local, state of Kansas and National events as they occur throughout the 19 th Century. Students will read, write and discuss a variety of topics as we analyze primary and secondary sources. Students will need a variety of resources, everyday, as they attend class. Those resources include: pen and pencil, highlighter, paper, 1" 3-ring binder (for social studies only), and a positive attitude. I look forward to a great year as we help students develop higher level thinking and prepare them for high school and beyond. I will be the team leader for the Silver 8 team this year. If you have questions regarding team policies and/or would like to set up a meeting with teachers. I can be reached at [email protected]. Math -- Mrs. Miller Hello! I am Mrs. Miller and I am the math teacher on the Silver 8 team at Anthony Middle School. I graduated from Kansas State University and have taught math for the past 18 years between the Geary County and Manhattan School Districts. I love working with middle school students! In my spare time I enjoy watching and coaching volleyball, running and hanging out with my family and friends. Math 8 students:. We will solve multi-step equations and inequalities, work with numbers that are “radical”, graph linear equations, learn the four operations on rational numbers and study congruence and similarity. We will also work with a TI-83 Plus graphing calculator to analyze and solve equations. By the end of the year students will be ready to take Algebra I at the East Campus. Algebra I students: Welcome to the A,B,C’s of mathematics. We will learn to solve linear, quadratic, absolute value, rational and radical equations. The TI-83 graphing calculators will be used throughout the year to allow us to compare and contrast the different equations and analyze the outcomes. Students will develop a greater understanding and appreciation of all the math they have ever learned. Geometry students: Geometry is the branch of mathematics concerned with questions of shape, size, relative position of figures and the properties of space. We will cover properties of triangles, quadrilaterals, circles and polyhedrons with students applying their knowledge of Algebra. Additional topics include, transformations, congruence, similarity of polygons, trigonome- Science -- Mr. Dick Eighth grade science curriculum is Physical Science which is the study of matter and energy, what they are and how they interact and change. The fall semester covers chemistry with topics like atoms, molecules, reactions, phases, temperature, pressure, etc. The spring semester covers physics with topics like electricity, sound waves, light waves, nuclear energy and radiation, motion, machines, etc. The nature of science and scientific thinking are major themes that run throughout the class. Our goal is to be observant and curious and learn a lot about the amazing universe we live in. Students will need a 3-ring binder (1 inch is good), paper, pencils/ pens, highlighters and a calculator (does not need to be a “scientific calculator”) If you have any questions or comments , I can be reached at [email protected]. Language Arts -- Mrs. Neitzel Welcome back students of AMS! I am thrilled to begin this new year with you and want to welcome you to Silver 8 Language Arts. My name is Mrs. Beth Neitzel and this year will mark my 15 th year teaching middle school students. I am currently a KSU student as well as your teacher as I work toward licensure to become a building administrator. I also serve at the building and district level on the Professional Development team. We will have a very busy 8th grade year as there is so much to cover before you move on to high school. 8 th grade ELA focuses on five essential questions as we explore a variety of texts and write for different purposes. The five questions that will guide our lessons are: ~ How does one impact change? ~How do our experience help define who we are and who we will become? ~How can choices impact an outcome? ~How does a deeper understanding of ourselves and others influence choices? ~How does one use knowledge/power to impact those around them? In an effort to explore these essential questions, we will read several novels as well as current event news articles and you can expect to see an increase in writing as I help prepare you for the rigors of high school. Some of the novels we plan to cover could include; The Pearl by Steinbeck, The Giver by Lowry, A Christmas Carol by Dickens, The Boy in the Striped Pajamas by Boyne, and a novel focused on the Civil War. Please note that for both the regular and advanced language arts classes, students will need the following supplies: a three-ring binder (1" will be fine), five divider tabs for the binder, loose leaf notebook paper, highlighters of different colors, pencils or pens. In addition, students should bring to class everyday something to read for enjoyment. You may find daily agenda updates and links to classroom materials on my Edmodo page. Additionally, I have a Twitter account where I will tweet updates and notices. Follow me at @mrs_neitzel where I will use #Silver8ELA for anything related to class. I welcome any questions and am open to meeting with any of you throughout the year. The best way to reach me is through email at [email protected]. Welcome to the team! Page 6 Purple Seven Welcome to AMS Mrs. Barten! Mrs. Burton, Mr. Pickler and Mrs. Green We would like to welcome you and your student to Anthony Middle School. We expect this year to be an exciting one filled with growth, learning and change for all of us. We have been working diligently to prepare for the school year and we look forward to its arrival. Your student will be involved with the Purple 7 interdisciplinary team. This team is made up of four core teachers from the basic subject areas of math, science, social studies and language arts. Teaming means coordinated planning. One of the primary philosophies supporting teaming is that teachers have the opportunity to coordinate their curriculum, basic learning skills and effective teaching techniques. During our common planning time the team will meet to deal with curricular issues, scheduling difficulties, but most importantly, to deal with students and their individual needs. One of the most positive aspects of the team is when students understand that their teachers know and care about them as a person and are aware of an individual’s progress in all areas. We, as teachers, enjoy being on a team where we can work together, plan together and see results together. We also consider you an important member of our team, and we look forward to working with you to help your child be as successful as possible this year. During team plan time, we will be available for conferences or phone calls. The school phone number is 785-587-2890. Please feel free to call us! We look forward to working with both you and your child. The middle school is very different from the elementary school. Here students must learn to be more organized and take responsibility for themselves and for their own learning. Even though your child will have many different teachers throughout the day, the core teachers will provide an environment that, although different, will be the same with respect to classroom expectations and guidelines. The following are a few guidelines of which you should be aware of. It will be the student’s responsibility to be in his/her seat when the bell rings and to have the appropriate materials needed for class. At this age, 7th graders should not need to return to their lockers for forgotten books or paper. Additionally, students are expected to complete and turn in assignments on time. Every effort is made by us to help guide that process, but ultimately the student must step up to make that occur. In order to help students become organized, we expect them to use the daily planner provided by the school. Please help us help your child take responsibility for his/her own learning. Please look at the Supply List on page 3 for the rest of supplies your student will need. These items are used frequently. Current grade reports will be distributed at parent/teacher conferences; however, your child will be notified of his/her grade frequently. Please ask your child about the grade he/she earned, or access the Parent Portal online to check grades frequently. The following grade scale will be used: 90-100 A 70-79 C 0-59 F 80-89 B 60-69 D Again, we look forward to a wonderful year. Thank you in advance for your help and support. Page 7 Silver Seven Mr. Snyder, Mrs. Solt, Mr. Geiber, Mr. Myers Science -- Mr. Myers Welcome to 7th Grade Science! Exploring Technology -- Mr. Eckelberry Exploring Technology (sometimes referred to as Explorations in Technology) is an elective class that is available to all 7 th and 8th grade students at Anthony Middle School. This class is all about students exploring technology in a “hands-on” manner. This is accomplished through 17 modules from which students are given the opportunity to rank the two they would most like to experience. A module is simply a workstation set up with everything that one or two students need to explore an area of technology. Exploring Technology is truly a “learn-by-doing” class! Some of the modules offered are Computer Graphics and Animation, Meteorology, Rocketry and Space, Electricity and Electronics, Webmaster, Research & Design, and many more. The class is one quarter (9weeks) long and students can sign up for the class for as many as six quarters during their time at middle school. For more information, go to the AMS website and click around until you find the teacher websites, you will then find my website link (or go directly to http://www.usd383.org/teacherlink/jeffe.aspx.) Art -- Ms. Regier Hello! My Name is Jennifer Regier and I am the art teacher at AMS. This will be my 5th year here and I will offer Drawing, Ceramics, Painting and Crafts. In Drawing Classes, we work with colored pencils, markers, soft pastels, oil pastels and graphite. The subject matter varies from ideas such a perspective, abstract, still life, nature, collage and reference materials. We focus on different techniques with each of the materials used. We are always trying new projects in crafts. I look forward to meeting my new students! If you would like to see some of the progress and finished work, follow me on instragram at @theamsartroom. Page 10 Health -- Mrs. Fingalsen Hi, I am Erin Fingalsen and I teach 7th and 8th grade Health. This is my 27th year teaching in the Manhattan-Ogden schools; all but two of those years have been at the middle school level. My husband and I are originally natives of Iowa, but quickly found Manhattan to be a wonderful place to live and raise a family. I hope if you are new to the community you too will find this a great place to call home. When I am not teaching I enjoy golfing, walking, running, lifting weights, spending time with friends and spending time with my family. Both Health classes focus on helping students make healthy lifestyle choices. The 7 th grade curriculum has a strong emphasis on drug education, while in 8th grade the students will be learning about Human Sexuality issues and responsibly taking care of themselves. In both classes we also spend time understanding the importance of overall fitness and nutrition and how to integrate it into our daily lives. I feel I am the luckiest teacher in the building because I get the opportunity to teach every student in the building both years. It is awesome to get to know them, develop a rapport with them and watch them grow into wonderful, amazing young adults. I look forward to meeting you all soon and if you have any questions or concerns about the health classes, please don’t hesitate to call or email me, [email protected]. Reading -- Mrs. Head Hi! I’m Mrs. Head and I teach Reading classes at Anthony Middle School. Everything students do in class is geared for their individual needs. All students start the class by taking a computerized reading test (the STAR test) to determine their current reading levels. Their level of work in READ 180 on the computer is set accordingly, as well as their written assignments and the level of books they can choose for individual reading. Reading class is both an elective and required class, depending on reading ability. Students who read below grade level are required to take the class and stay in it until they reach the reading level for their grade. Students who choose to take the class and already read at grade level will work to improve their abilities for as many quarters as they choose. Many students make multiple-year gains, with the highest improvement being ten grade levels in two years of class. Many students make three to five years’ gain. All reading levels are checked at the end of each quarter and students are moved to progressively more difficult work as they improve. Students work in small groups, with activities changing once every class period. Students have four basic activities - working on the computer, reading silently, working with me on written assignments or listening as a book is read aloud. Every other day their activities will change, so in two days they will have done all four activities. They will need to have a book in class every day. Daily reading at home is highly recommended. The READ 180 program works on reading words accurately, instant recognition of words, spelling skills, reading fluency, and comprehension. Most students enjoy working on this program. READ 180 and the other classroom activities help students make great gains in their reading skills. Physical Education -- Mr. Hess & Mrs. Ten Eyck Hello! My name is Mrs. Ten Eyck and I am the girls' physical education teacher. I graduated from Emporia State University in 2008 and this will be my 3rd year teaching girls’ P.E. at Anthony. During the course of the year you will be able to take part in a variety of team games, fitness activities and outdoor sports. Mr. Hess has taught for USD 383 for 30 years. He is the boys’ physical education teacher here at AMS and the High School Baseball Coach. All students will be expected to wear the required P.E. gray T-shirt, (Can be purchased at Central Enrollment on July 31st or at the AMS office.) shorts or sweats, tied shoes and socks. Please put student’s name on or in everything so that lost clothing may be returned to the student. Students should be prepared to go outside in cool weather by having a sweatshirt or jacket in their P.E. locker. All physical education uniforms are to be taken home to be washed every Friday and brought back clean on Monday. Students must bring a note to their teacher if, for any reason, they cannot participate in Physical Education. If the student cannot participate for more than three days, a doctor’s note is required. Sportsmanship is a high priority in our classroom. It is included in the student’s academic grade. We have students at many different levels of skill and knowledge of activities. We expect all students to be inclusive with other students and show respect for each other. Physical Education is graded according to a ten point daily grading scale. This includes dressing out, participation, effort, sportsmanship, and skill development. School and classroom rules need to be followed. Physical Education is a no gum class due to choking. We expect all students to work to the best of their ability and be highly involved in the activities and show improvement of skill level. Page 11 Vocal Music -- Mrs. Nunnenkamp-Engelman Hello All, My name is Hannah Nunnenkamp-Engelman, and I am very excited to be a part of the Anthony Middle School Family. If you are new to the Middle school, here is just a little bit about me. I am a 2011 graduate of KSU and this will be my second year in the Manhattan-Ogden district. I currently serve the Kansas Music Educators Association Board as the Tri-M Music Honor Society Chair. In my “Spare Time” I thoroughly enjoy sewing, crocheting, and playing clarinet and piano. Together my husband and I enjoy serving in our Church, watching our favorite movies and TV shows, keeping up with all things Bill Snyder and the KSU Wildcats, and hanging out with our family and friends. This upcoming year will be a very exciting year for the Anthony Middle School choir program. We will be embarking on many fun and exciting musical opportunities! There will be four concerts throughout the year, one each quarter, as well as an opportunity for your student to join after school choir, opportunity to audition for District and State Choir, as well as our annual vocal music “Choir Tour”. I am extremely excited to meet and work with the students and families at USD 383. Working with, and learning from my choir students has given me the opportunity to see music touch students lives in a way that is truly beyond words. We have many choir classes that will work on singing, music content, and working towards performances throughout the year. I am looking forward to a wonderful experience at AMS and EMS and wish you all a wonderful start to you 2015-2016 academic year! I will be at AMS for periods 1-3 at AMS. Orchestra -- Mr. Toll Middle School Orchestra: This is for 7th grade students who are progressing from two years of orchestra at the elementary school level. It is also a great place for beginners who may not have had the opportunity to play in 5 th and 6th grade, or are switching to a different instrument. We will spend the 1 st quarter learning, reviewing, and solidifying excellent playing position, technique, note and rhythm reading, and learning the important aspects of large ensemble playing. The remaining quarters will be spent learning improved musicianship through the preparation of concert performance literature. Advanced Orchestra: This class is for 8th graders who completed 7th grade orchestra. Advanced orchestra will develop mature techniques, including shifting, vibrato and varied bow articulations. They will also prepare music at an advanced level for concert performances and festival. Band -- Mr. Freeby Students in both the Advanced and Beginning classes will receive training in music theory as well as many performance outlets. We have a Pep Band from August through October, we'll perform seasonal carols at the Manhattan Town Center Mall, and we'll have three concerts throughout the school year. Additionally, we have an annual "Grade School Tour" that takes place every May and we record a CD of our "End-of-the-Year" Concert. Every other year the band travels to a Music Festival to receive ratings on our Musical performance. There is a great deal of playing and performing and having fun associated with being in the band at AMS. When considering enrolling for band - if you've played a band instrument for at least one year prior to coming to AMS, you should enroll in the Advanced Band Class. If you have struggled a bit on your instrument and would feel more comfortable in the Beginning Class, it's OK to enroll as a beginner. Students in the Beginning class meet at the same time as the 6 th hour advanced class. Because they meet at the same time, when a student reaches a certain level of playing ability, that student just moves one room over and becomes part of the Advanced Class with no need to change their schedule. I am a travelling teacher so the best way to contact him is by e-mail: [email protected]. I will be at Anthony during 6th and 7th hours (12:39 - 2:11 P.M.). KSU Partnership -- Mrs. Getz Anthony Middle School is a Professional Development School (PDS). A PDS is a collaborative relationship between a local school and a teacher education program that is focused on the simultaneous improvement of both organizations. The ultimate goal of a Professional Development School is to help K-12 students achieve high academic standards while providing enhanced preparation of both future and practicing teachers. Through the involvement of our teachers and administrators with KSU faculty and the access to many resources available through the partnership, the quality of preparation of undergraduates in the teaching education program is greatly enhanced. Anthony students and teachers benefit as well. Through the placement of undergraduate students in AMS classrooms, additional assistance can be provided to students through one-on-one tutoring, working with small groups and general classroom assistance. Through the partnership with KSU, USD 383 and Anthony Middle School, we are all working together to educate and encourage continuous learning for students and teachers. Page 12 Library -- Mrs. Thornburrow The Anthony Middle School library mission is to give students the resources to become independent learners and information seekers. When you walk into our middle school library, you will find friendly staff to help and assist with each student’s needs. The library collection diversity will allow each student to find books and resources to match their interest and extend learning. Students have access to Computers and printer, card catalog lookup station, work areas, check in/checkout of library books, quiet space to read, to print and lastly access to digital resources. Parents will be contacted on significant injuries or illnesses. 3. 4. 5. Medication Policy 1. Prescription medication requires both professional (physician, dentist, orthodontist, nurse practitioner or physician assistant) and parental consent before it can be given at school. Consent forms will be available at enrollment and are also on the school district’s website. 2. Over-the-counter medication can be given with written parental consent only. These consent forms can also be found on the district website. You may also give consent for Ibuprofen, Acetaminophen and cough drops to be given as needed on the health information sheet that you will be completing at enrollment. Prescription and over-the-counter medication must be in the original, appropriately labeled container. The school will have a stock bottle of Ibuprofen and Acetaminophen, and a limited supply of cough drops, so it is not necessary for you to provide these medications for your student. All medication will be stored in the nurse’s office with the exception of inhalers and EpiPens which can be carried with the student (after the consent form has been left in the nurse’s office and the student has demonstrated for the nurse proper administration of medication). New medication consent forms must be filled out each school year. Immunization Information A single dose of Tdap is required for grades 7-12 regardless of interval since the last tetanus. Two doses of Varicella (chickenpox) are required for grades K-10. These requirements are set by the Kansas Department of Health and Environment. School nurses will be available at Central Enrollment to review your child’s immunization records to see if additional vaccines are needed. You can also view and print off your child’s immunization record in the Parent Portal. This information is helpful to have with you when going in for physicals. As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to email or call! Yearbook The more pictures we have, the better our AMS 2015-2016 yearbook can become.
