COMPETITION DETAILS:
 Entrants must attend opening day at the Fair Wednesday, July 27.
 Awards will be mailed to winning contestants after the Fair via the entry
department.
 Photos must be taken via a phone and emailed via phone to:
[email protected] by 5p. Photos received after 5p will not be
accepted. Winners will be announced at 7p. Winners need not be present
to win.
 Each contestant will receive a Fair theme upon entering. The themes are
as follows:
-Agriculture (i.e. photos of animals, plants etc)
-Entertainment (i.e. roaming, music, All Ohio State Fair Band and
Youth Choir, etc.)
-Rides
-Food
-Arts (i.e. Cox Fine Arts, Creative/Youth Arts located in Cardinal Hall
and all other handcrafted items seen throughout the Fair)

Important Dates:
 June 20 – Entry deadline (all entry information, payment and uploaded images must be received).
 June 20-24 (9-11a & 1-3p no exceptions) The Brillo Pads and Bowling Pins will be available for pick up at the Ohio Expo
Center/State Fair storeroom. See division notes for 4401 and 4402 for details.
 July 11-16 – Shipped entries received. Shipped entries received after July 16 will not be accepted.
 July 15 (4p-8p) and July 16 (11a-7p) Delivery Dates. Please refer to specific division notes for important information.
 July 27 – August 6 Creative Arts hours of operation, 9a-9p daily.
 August 7 – Creative Arts hours of operation 9a-6p.
 August 7 – Artwork pick-up 7p-9p (carry-out only; entrance on grounds not permitted after 7p).
 August 8 – Artwork pick-up 10a-8p.
Basic Entry Guidelines







ONLINE ENTRY ONLY.
Refer to specific divisions for a list of items that may be entered.
Items entered in the wrong class may be changed at judges discretion.
Best of Show winners are selected from 1 st place winners (unless division states otherwise). Judges may choose not
to award a BOS.
Judging competitions are closed to the public unless otherwise stated in the specific divisions as open judging.
Items previously exhibited in the Creative Arts Center will not be accepted.
Disqualified items need to be picked up before July 27, 2016.
Eligibility






Fees



You are not required to win at a county fair in order to enter at the Ohio State Fair.
Only one artist’s name is permitted per entry, with artist meeting entry criteria (i.e. if an age bracket is stated, the artist
must meet the requirements).
Entries must have been created in the last two years (unless division states otherwise).
Artists must be 11 years of age or older as of January 1 of the current year (unless division states otherwise).
Artists must reside in the state of Ohio to be eligible to compete.
Professionals are prohibited from entering (unless division states otherwise) and are defined as follows: A person who makes
their general salary from the arts & crafts industry.
The online entry fee for Creative Arts is $10 plus $1 per class entry.
Artist fees and entry fees will not be refunded for cancelled/non-exhibiting entries.
Overpayments of less than $5 will not be refunded.
Entry Registration
 Artists are encouraged to enter multiple classes and may enter two entries per class (unless division notes
otherwise).

 Entry Information (i.e. tags, tickets, info) will be mailed to you in July. Upon receipt, double check all information.

Delivery of Entries:




Entries will only be accepted on the designated date and hours listed in the specific Information Packets.
Please bring any forms required for the competitions entered.
ALL FORMS MUST BE TYPED. Entries will not be accepted if the required forms are not typed. All forms are
available
online and can be filled out (typed) online, and then printed.
Upon arrival, your entry will be measured according to your competition size rules (if applicable). Entries will not be
accepted if over maximum measurements.
Pre-fair Delivery to Creative Arts Center located in Cardinal Hall:
 Friday July 15 from 4p-8p and Saturday July 16 from 11a-7p.
 Exit I-71 at 17th Avenue and go west. You will pass the Ohio State Highway Patrol Academy. At Velma Avenue; turn right.
Cardinal Hall will be on your left. Follow Delivery Signs.


Fair Deliveries

July 27 – August 7 – Exit I-71 at 17th Avenue and go west. When you arrive at the Fair’s parking plaza, travel in the left lane
to the parking booth. Show the attendant your Gate 2 Unload/Load parking pass (this pass will be mailed to you by the Entry
Department in July along with your Contestant tag). Proceed to Gate 2 and show the attendant your Gate 2 Unload/Load
parking pass. You will have 15 minutes to deliver your exhibit. You will then move your vehicle and pay $5 to park in the
main parking lot. This same procedure will be used for all culinary competitions that have drop off dates during the Fair.
NOTE: Admission tickets are required for contestants to enter the gates each day they attend the Fair.
Shipments:
 Entries may be shipped prepaid and addressed to: Ohio State Fair/Creative Arts, 717 East 17 th Avenue, Columbus,
OH, 43211.
 Shipped exhibits should arrive the week of July 11-16 and should include a list of articles submitted along with
Artist’s name and address.
 A prepaid preaddressed return label (for return mailing) MUST accompany the above shipment if the Ohio State Fair is
requested to ship the item back to the artist. Items will not be shipped back without receiving a prepaid return label.
 Items being returned cannot be delivered to a PO box.
Pick-Up Procedures:
 Artists are required to pick up their entries on Sunday, August 7 from 7p-9p (carry-out only; entrance on grounds not permitted
after 7p) or Monday, August 8 from 10a-8p on a first=come basis. Follow Pick-up Signs.
 Entries not picked up by 8p on August 8 will be disposed of by Fair Management.
 If a contestant requests that someone pick up his/her items, a letter of authorization and claim tags are required.
 Contestants must enter where directed, sign in and wait until their name is called. Have your claim tags ready.
 When the contestant’s name is called a staff member will escort only the artist to designated areas to collect entered
items.
 When items are collected, the contestant is required to sign and date the release sheet (confirming that all entries
have been picked up).

Entries must be checked in at the dressing rooms of Cardinal Hall Creative Arts Center (right side of stage) from
9a-10a on Sunday, July 31, the day of the show. This time frame is necessary for the closed judging to take place prior to
the runway show. If late, your entry may not be judged or eligible for awards.
Contestants (and models) should check in at the dressing rooms at 1pm.
Single clothing item models will show at 2p, with other classes immediately following (this allows models time to change).
Pieces must be delivered on a hanger(s); with a clear, dry cleaner-like bag cover (please do not
tie or staple bottom).
Items must be delivered with entry tag (attached with a lightweight string or cord and small safety pin) and a completed
Fashion Style Show Form attached. Form must be clearly printed or typed. If you enter multiple pieces, a separate form
should be completed for each (form includes a description of the garment to be read by narrator during the fashion show).
Entries will be released following the show.
Beginner Level is defined as contestant with less than two years experience.
No wedding attire is permitted.
Entries may be modeled by the contestant or an appropriate model must be provided by contestant.
Class 1 excludes use of upcycled items.
Judging Guidelines:


Construction (50%) (closed judging held morning of the show)
Accuracy of grain line; suitability of fabric to design; coordination of trims and bindings to design and fabric; suitability
of interfacing to fabric; seams (uniformity grading, stitch quality finishes); finishes (buttonholes, collars, facings, hems,
pockets, pressing, shoulder, zippers); degree of difficulty – pattern, fabric.
Fit and Fashion (50%) (open judging at time of show)
Fit (bust, waist, hip line, sleeve length, shoulder ease, hem length); suitability to height, weight, age and coloring;
individuality; accessories; color coordination; appropriateness of garment for model.

Gourds must be predominate in all classes.
A clear finish (wax, clear varnish, etc.) is allowed in all classes.
Limited accessories allowed (bases, hangers, gourd pieces, embellishments, etc.) unless noted otherwise.
Whole gourds should have no holes or cuts that completely penetrate the shell.
Cut gourds (bowls, bottles, baskets, etc) must be cleaned inside and may be decorated inside and out.
Gourds may be whole or cut unless specifically noted in the class description.
Paint / Color may include oils, acrylics, water colors, inks, color pencils, etc.
Entries that have been exhibited at previous Ohio State Fairs are not permitted to compete for prizes.

handbags, clutch purses, etc. will be allowed as long as they are incorporated in a finished entry.
Class 1, Youth/Beginner is open to individuals that are under 18 years old or are adults that have 2 years or less

Contestants will be notified by email (a valid e-mail address is crucial for notifications) no later than July 8, on judging

Winning entries should be printed (photo quality) for wall display in the Creative Arts Center. If mailing, please mail in nonbendable envelope to protect.
Submitted photos must be 8”x10”
Photos should not be mounted or framed. To create a consistent display, CA staff will mount on acid-free mat board inhouse.
Contestant’s photo title, name, hometown and description should be provided on 3”x5” card (please print neatly) with photo.
If you would like to sell your photo please add sell amount on the 3”x5” card. The Ohio State Fair receives a 30%
commission on all sales.
Photos must be displayed for the duration of the Fair, failure to do so will result in a forfeiture of award dollars/sales dollars.
Contestants requesting the return of a photo by mail must include a self-addressed postage paid envelope.

Design contest using tabletops to express creativity and style. Dress the table space with place settings, linens, menu
and accessories to enhance the dining experience of your fictional guests and explore your theme.
One entry per contestant.
Individual or a team of two persons including contestant will be permitted on the floor during set-up time.
Competition is limited to 16 entries. Enter quickly!
A completed Tablescaping Description Form must be submitted when delivering (form online). Must include a menu
suitable for your “party” on a 5”x8” card (will be included in your display).
Delivery and live set-up on Wednesday, July 27 from 10a-1p; with judging following at 3p. The top 3-5 tables (number
determined by Creative Arts available space) will be moved after judging to the display area and may need to be partially
reassembled by the contestants.
Others must be removed by 3:45p, unless judge requests your table to be on display throughout fair.
Any materials are permissible (no perishable food/items as winning tables will remain on display throughout the Fair).
Tablescape should include place settings for 4-6, chairs will not be used in display (tabletop only).
Contestants to use a 60” round table with a white to floor cloth base, provided by OSF.

Tole and decorative painting is defined as the method of painting of designs on any object to decorate to make a picture.
It’s a diverse art form that utilizes a variety of techniques and media to decorate functional and nonfunctional surfaces.
Entries are accepted for Non-Professional and Professional.
 Non-Professional: A person who paints for “fun” and/or does not receive more than $1,000 per year from his/her
painting skill, and has never entered the professional category as of January 1, 2016. Once a person qualifies as a
professional, they may not enter the Non-Professional division.
 Professional: A person/teacher who paints and receives more than $1,000 per year from his/her painting or teaches
tole or decorative painting (regardless of the amount of money received) or is certified by The Society of
Decorative Painters as either a Certified Decorative Artist (CDA) or Master Decorative Artist (MDA).

Wraps Per Inch (WPI) are determined with relaxed yarn.
A 3”x5” index card describing yarn, fiber content, spinning technique and intended use of yarn must be attached to
each skein and items made from hand spun yarn. Including Wraps per Inch (WPI) information is optional, but helpful
for judging.
Items made from handspun yarn must be accompanied by small skein of yarn and a card with spinning technique, fiber

Skeins must be two yards in circumference with four figure eight ties.

Upon submission of your entry you agree to hold harmless and
forever discharge the State of Ohio, Ohio Expositions
Commission, its members, officers, employees, contractors and
other authorized agents from any and all claims, actions, causes of
actions, demands, costs, or damages that may arise from the loss,
theft or other damage to your property during or related to its
exhibition.
Entry tag and Quilt & Wall Hanging Description Form must be
attached with a small safety pin to each item (front right hand
bottom corner).
Quilts and wall hangings will be displayed at the risk of the
owner. Creative Arts staff will be in attendance to help monitor
exhibits and make every effort to protect them.
A National Quilting Association Certified judge will assess the
quilts pre-fair, selecting class standings, Best of Show and firsttime entrant winners.
The judge will complete a comment sheet that will be returned
with each entry. This sheet provides contestants with skill
improvement assessments and helpful comments.
If contestant’s name is sewn into the entry or is on any label, it
must be covered for judging.
Entries must be constructed, including quilting, by the contestant
(or group depending upon class) and made within the past three
years.
Classes 1-8 must be quilted (tufted or tied will not be accepted).
All construction, including quilting, must be the work of the
contestant except for Classes 2-3 (Group Project).
Miniature quilt: with overall patterns reflecting reduced scale and
miniaturization. If blocks are used they should be proportional.
Quilts may not exceed 24” on any side.





Sleeves - Preparing Your Piece:
All entries (except classes 9-10) must have
a sleeve attached securely to the top edge
of the quilt to facilitate its hanging on a
metal rod.
The sleeve must have a 4” wide opening to
accommodate the metal rod and should
extend the quilt width to allow the quilt to
hang smoothly. Small items (wall
hangings, baby and miniature quilts) may
have
smaller
sleeves
that
can
accommodate a dowel or smaller hanging
device.
The sleeve may be of a muslin fabric sewn
or safety pinned to the back of the quilt
(much like a rod heading on a curtain) –
absolutely no straight pins. Safety pins
should not show through on the front of
the quilt.
Entries over 90” long must have a sleeve
attached to the back at 90” from the
bottom for display.
Quilts with scalloped or irregular edge
should have the sleeve positioned in such a
way as to have the entire face of the quilt
displayed.

its original use and remade into an object.

The project may use many different materials.
New materials may be used for up to 25% of the item.
No poisonous or hazardous materials may be used or displayed.
Entries must include a 5”x8” card (typed or legibly printed; front only) with the following information: short
description of items, list of materials used & item’s use (if functional).
Class 6 - FREE Bowling Pins (up to 4), to be used in your creation, will be provided by Columbus Bowling Palace on a
first come basis while supplies last to registered entrants to pick up. The Bowling Pins will be available for pick up at
the Ohio Expo Center/State Fair storeroom during the week of June 20-24 from 9-11a & 1-3p (no exceptions).
The storeroom is located near the Grounds Office. You must present a copy of your entry form to pick up your Bowling
Pin.
Class 5 (any standard door approx. 30”w x 80”h). Door must stand alone and must not exceed 24” deep (including
stand).

FREE Brillo Pads will be provided by the sponsor on a first come basis to the first 24 registered entrants to pick up
product. Up to 720 Brillo Pads (float-class 1) and 360 Brillo Pads (classes 2-4). The Brillo Pads will be available for
pick up at the Ohio Expo Center/State Fair storeroom during the week of June 20-24 from 9-11a & 1-3p (no
exceptions). The storeroom is located near the Grounds Office. You must present a copy of your entry form to pick up
your Brillo Pads. The boxes also include a helpful do/don’t sheet for working with Brillo Pads.
Free Brillo Pads are limited to a total of 720 (float-class 1) and 360 (classes 2-4).
Float contestants are invited to pull their creations in July 27 parade following judging.
Place winning floats will participate in the Fair’s daily parade (based on CA staff availability).
Entries will be displayed in the Creative Arts Center throughout the Fair.
Float dimensions may not exceed 5’hx4’wx4’l (height measured from the ground up). Float must be securely attached to a
wagon that can easily be pulled by a walking adult.
Winners selected by a panel of judges that may include representatives from Armaly Brands and the Ohio Expositions
Commission.
Sponsor/Commissioner’s Choice will be chosen from all participating entries – entries do not need to place in the top three
of the classes to be eligible for Sponsor/Commissioner’s Choice.
Floats can be made by an individual, group or family; with one person serving as “entrant” and fair contact.
To maintain proper and fair judging, creations may not include identifying names (contestant’s name, organization’s

Sponsor/Commissioner’s Choice will be chosen from all participating entries. Entries do not need to place in the top
three to be eligible for this special prize.
To maintain proper and fair judging, creations may not include identifying names (contestant’s name, organization’s
name, etc.).
