Scatter
Plots
A
Scatter Plot is a ____________ with points
plotted that shows a _____________________
between two sets of data.
This is considered __________________ __________
because there are two variables.
Write an Equation
Use the scatter plot above to write an equation
for the trend line.
Step 1: Find the slope.
Step 2: Find the y-intercept.
Predictions & Trend Lines
A
Trend Line is a ______________ line that
comes as close as possible to the points on a
scatter plot. There are approximately the same
number of points ____________ & ____________ the
line. Ignore any _______________.
Make Predictions
a)
Draw a trend line.
b)
Predict how much you
should expect to have
to pay in repairs for an
8 year old car.
Create a scatter plot using the information from the table.
Creating a Scatter Plot
Association describes how sets of data are related.
A
Cluster is a set of closely grouped data. The data
can cluster around a ____________ or a _____________.
An
Outlier is a data point that is very
___________________ from the rest of the data in the set.
a) Describe any clusters.
b) Identify any outliers.

__________
because there are two variables.
Write an Equation
Use the scatter plot above to write an equation
for the trend line.
Step 1: Find the slope.
(answers may vary)
Step 2: Find the y-intercept.
*Pick two points the line
appears to cross through.
*Use the slope and one of
the points from step 1, to
find the y-intercept.
(1,100) and (7,900)

m ≈ 133
(answers may vary)
y = mx + b
100 = 133(1) + b
100 = 133 + b
-33 = b
*Write your equation using
the slope and the
y-intercept that were
calculated above.
y = 133x – 33

Directions:
Print pages 1&2 and 3&4 front to back. I use the following
option on my printer: double sided, flip along the short edge.
Have students align the bottom two tabs (“Predictions & Trend
Lines” at the very bottom & “Interpreting a Scatter Plot” above
that) and fold over the top half so that “Creating a Scatter Plot”
is above Interpreting and the title is at the very top. Then,
secure with 2-3 staples.
Have students cut off the extra piece on the right side. (I have
scaled the foldable down to fit inside our Interactive Math
Notebooks) If it is photocopied properly, there should not be
any problems in this section on the back side.
The final product should look like this:
