If you know you have a rootknot-nematode problem or
suspect they are setting up
shop on your farm, November
is a good time to soil-sample
for these yield-robbing pests.
The root-knot nematode gets
its name from galls that form
as a result of feeding on the
cotton plants’ roots. These galls
cannot be removed and can
diminish the roots’ ability to
absorb water and nutrients
from the soil.
PhytoGen® cottonseed is
offering assistance through
the new Nematode Awareness
Program with free soil sampling
for root-knot nematodes. We
will pay to analyze up to 20
composite samples per grower.

“I saw a racehorse in PHY 499 WRF, and I just gave it heck,” says Levi Burns, Primera, Texas.
Push It to the Limit
For Levi Burns, growing cotton is in his blood. It’s a lifestyle he looks forward
to sharing with his son.
“I cut my teeth on learning how to farm from my family and now I’m the fourthgeneration farmer on this ground,” Burns says. “My wife, Brooke, and I have a
5-year-old son, Bo, who is just like me. He’s always riding around the fields with
me ready to help. Pretty soon it will be his turn to farm this ground.”
The Primera, Texas, grower worked with his father, Richard, throughout his
childhood. His dad, uncle and both grandfathers farmed, so he has been
immersed in farming since he was a little boy.
“I farmed land back when I was in high school, and I would come back and farm
about 150 acres while I was in college,” Burns says. “I’m the sole owner of my
operation, but I do share a little a bit of land with my dad.”
Seedling vigor plays a big part when Burns is selecting a particular cotton
variety. He’s been growing PhytoGen® cottonseed for several years now and
planted most of his cotton acreage to PhytoGen brand PHY 367 WRF and
PHY 499 WRF this year.
“PhytoGen brand varieties are tremendous when it comes to seedling vigor,” he
says. “These varieties come busting out of the ground screaming. PHY 499 WRF
had a stand within five days. Every seed came up, while some of my other
varieties took up to two weeks to get a stand.
“I want a variety that will turn out and responds to being pushed to the limit.
I saw a racehorse in PHY 499 WRF, and I just gave it heck.”
(continued on next page)
Harvest results proved Burns’ first impressions correct. His PHY 499 WRF yielded
4 bales per acre on his irrigated land and more than 2½ bales on his dryland.

If root-knot nematodes are present on your farm,
we recommend planting a variety that provides
tolerance to the pest. PhytoGen brand PHY 367 WRF
has strong root-knot-nematode tolerance and
performs well in fields with verticillium wilt.

This time of year also provides an opportunity to
evaluate variety performance and begin thinking
about variety selection for next year. Take into
consideration which varieties exhibited good
seedling vigor and early season growth along with
consistent yields and fiber qualities when making
buying decisions for the 2013 crop year.

The consistent performance of these products
along with the excellent fiber properties have
made growers big fans of PhytoGen.
If you didn’t have an opportunity to plant
PhytoGen cottonseed on your farm this year,
I encourage you to consider PHY 367 WRF
and PhytoGen brand PHY 499 WRF for 2013.

PhytoGen Says: Thank You, Growers!
Growers across the Cotton Belt planted PhytoGen® brand
PHY 499 WRF on more acres than any other variety on
the market this year. PhytoGen brand PHY 375 WRF, the
most-planted variety in 2011, stayed at the top of the list,
coming in as the third-most-planted variety in 2012.
The only thing PhytoGen can say is: Thank you!
“We are very proud and humbled to once again grow in
market share from 2011 to 2012,” says Duane Canfield,
portfolio marketing leader and general manager for
PhytoGen at Dow AgroSciences.
In some ways, Canfield notes, 2012 is a repeat of last
year’s U.S. Department of Agriculture Cotton Varieties
Planted U.S. 2012 Crop report. The numbers changed
a bit, but the preface — PHY — is the same.
“As in 2011, PhytoGen has the No. 1 planted Pima variety in
PHY 805 RF, the No. 1 planted Acala variety in PHY 725 RF
and the No. 1 planted Upland variety in PHY 499 WRF,”
Canfield notes.
According to the varieties planted report, Upland growers
planted PHY 499 WRF on 9.65 percent of the acres in the
United States and PHY 375 WRF on 5.44 percent. By region,
those numbers are markedly higher in the Southeast and
far West, where growers chose PhytoGen® cottonseed
41.84 percent and 33.67 percent of the time, respectively.
All told, growers planted PhytoGen brand varieties on
18.4 percent of their acreage. It’s a sign that PhytoGen
cottonseed is offering growers the characteristics they
need to make a profit.

PhytoGen® brand PHY 499 WRF, the most-planted variety in 2012.

Thank you!
Thank you for choosing PhytoGen® cottonseed to be a part of your farming
operation. Thank you for helping us achieve the feat of having the No. 1 and
No. 3 planted varieties across the Cotton Belt!
We are very proud to once again grow in market share from 2011 to 2012. In fact,
this is the 10th year in a row in which PhytoGen has had year-over-year market
share gains. Each year, more farmers are making the right choice and becoming
big fans of PhytoGen cottonseed due to high and consistent yields, strong vigor,
excellent fiber quality and traits they need.
In 2012, PhytoGen brand PHY 499 WRF became the No. 1 planted variety in
the United States in its first full launch year. PhytoGen brand PHY 375 WRF
came in as the No. 3 planted variety after being the No. 1 variety in 2011.
As you begin to think about which varieties to plant in 2013, we hope you
choose PhytoGen® brand varieties, and we would be honored to have one
of our folks help you in any way we can.
Thanks again and good luck in 2013!
