Friday 25 September 2015 Dear Parents and Carers, Most students (and staff) seem to have settled into the routine of the term now, after the long summer break. It has been terrific to see high levels of engagement in lessons across the school and students are already producing work of a very high standard. It was a pleasure to introduce the Sixth Form to the work of Professor Steve Peters this week, who believes life would be so much easier for us all, if we learn how to ‘manage our Chimp’ that is the limbic part of our brain that causes us to feel unnecessary anxiety, guilt, and fear that prevent our more logical and rational side coming to the fore. As a staff we have devoted some time to examining the strategies outlined in Peters’ book, The Chimp Paradox, in the hope that we can help all of our students cope with the inevitable pressures and vicissitudes of life. Many thanks to parents who joined us for our Year 8 and Year 10 Information Evenings this week. A reminder that all materials and presentations from all our Information Evenings are on our website under the Parents tab. At the Year 10 evening, Mr Lach explained our new approach to target setting, which the Year 10 students took part in on Thursday afternoon. For the first time, the students themselves have engaged in their own target setting, having been presented with the statistical probabilities of their achievement at each GCSE grade. We hope in doing this that they will feel much greater ownership over their targets, which are designed to encourage and inspire. I am pleased to say that, from October half term, students will have a choice to wear navy trousers as an alternative to the kilt. These will be available only from Lester Bowden and will be priced from £18-£22. They look very smart with the new blazer and jumper and we know from our consultation with numerous groups of students that they will welcome having an additional choice for the colder months of the year. As soon as they are in stock, I will let you know. Finally this week, many thanks to those of you who have responded to the Sixth Form consultation on admitting boys into the Sixth Form. A reminder that we intend to hold a consultation meeting on Thursday 8 October. So that we can ensure we have the capacity for everyone who wishes to attend, I would be grateful if you could email my PA, Jill Doh [email protected], if you would like to come to that meeting. Have a lovely weekend. Netball Success for Rosebery Students Last weekend, AAS (Ashtead All Stars Netball Club) went on their annual netball tour to JCA Shrewsbury. We travelled by double decker coach setting off midday Friday. AAS is a team made up of girls from several local schools - including Rosebery. At JCA the girls played netball matches with many different schools and clubs from all over the UK. They also had the opportunity to do other sporting activities, eg rock climbing and trapeze. AAS U15 won their division and the U13 As came third. It was a great weekend with some lovely netball played and lots of fun outdoor activities for the girls to enjoy. Millie Jones, Natasha Murphy and Charlie Derwant-Smith should get a special mention as they won the U15 section in a thrilling final game. This will have an impact on the timing of school and Education Welfare Service interventions, which are put in place if there are concerns about the attendance of individual students. Given the threshold has risen, we will be expected to intervene with more students than in previous years. If you have any queries regarding how this may impact on your daughter, please contact Mrs Day, our Attendance Office on 01372 845469. In the meantime, please can I ask you to ensure that non-emergency appointments, such as dental check-ups and optician’s appointments, continue to be made out of school hours and that any emergency appointments are supported by appointment cards/school excuse slips. Applications for absence due to exceptional circumstances will need to be supported by official documentation. Holidays during term time continue to remain unauthorised and subject to a Penalty Notice in accordance with our Attendance Policy. Thank you for your continued support in minimising your daughter’s absence from school. Students will need two texts only; one play and one novel. We will shortly begin to study the novel component of the course and your daughter will study either Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen, The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson or A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens. Your daughter’s English teacher will let her know which text she will be studying. These texts will be provided in class. However, if your daughter wishes to annotate them, and we strongly advise this as examination preparation, she will need to pay for them. As you will appreciate, once the books have been written in, they are unusable for other students; we often find that students are proud to keep their annotated copies as reminders of their hard work. We will be using the English and Media Centre editions of The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde and A Christmas Carol, which include the full version of the text together with extremely helpful study guides and activities on each of the chapters. These are available to purchase from school at the discounted price of £8.00 each. A Christmas Carol The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll ISBN: 9781906101381 ISBN: 9781906101374 Students studying Pride and Prejudice will use the Penguin Classics version but we also recommend they purchase the CGP Text Study Guide, which provides notes on the context of the novel, the plot and the characters and includes exam style questions. Both these books are also available to purchase from school as a set at the discounted price of £8.00. CGP GCSE English Text Guide - Pride and Prejudice Pride and Prejudice ISBN: 9780141439518 ISBN: 978-1847624857 If you wish to purchase these texts yourself, please make sure that you buy the above editions only (the ISBN numbers have been given as a reference). It is extremely difficult for students to use different versions of the same text in the classroom.
