This slideshow will show you why we should have George Washington on the Mount Rushmore National Memorial. Where and when was he born? George Washington was born in the state of Virginia on February 22, 1732. Where and when did he die? • He died at his Mount Vernon home on December 14, 1799. What was his family like? • His father’s name was Augustine Washington and his mother’s name was Mary Ball Washington. • He had nine brothers and sisters. His Personal Life At 26, George married Martha Dandridge Custis, a widow who already had two children, Jackie and Patsy. Washington never had any children of his own. Washington appointed the First Cabinet, which had four members. Washington appointed the first 10 justices of the Supreme Court. He served 2 four year terms as President and would not serve more even when the public wanted him to. He spent 50 years in public service. His vice president was John Adams. Jobs he had before he was president • He was a surveyor at 15 because his mom could not afford to send him to college. • He bred dogs. • He was a delegate from Virginia. • He was the Commander in Chief of the Continental Army. Fun Facts • At 6 ft. 2 in. tall, he was one of the tallest presidents. • He had on-going tooth problems his whole life and at 57 had all his teeth pulled. fun facts about George Washington The Washington Monument is 555 feet tall and is the tallest stone structure (obelisk). It was built in memory of the many things George Washington did for the United States. Closing • George Washington led a new country in the Revolutionary War, helped make laws for the new country to follow and built a new nation on freedom and a right for independence.
