Visible Light One Section of the Electromagnetic Spectrum What is Visible Light? ● ● ● Electromagnetic waves that you can see Made up of the colors red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and violet When all the colors are combined the waves appear white in color Where is it found on the Electromagnetic Spectrum? ● ● Visible light waves are found between infrared waves and ultraviolet waves. They have shorter wavelengths and higher frequencies that infrared waves, but longer wavelengths and lower frequencies than ultraviolet waves. Other Facts/Uses ● ● ● ● Red visible light waves have the longest wavelength and lowest frequency Violet visible light waves have the shortest wavelength and highest frequency Prisms can refract visible white light and separate it into its individual colors Objects look a certain color because that wavelength of light is reflected back to us. All other colors are absorbed. Examples/Where Visible Light is Found ● ● ● Rays from the sun Incandescent, CFL, and LED lightbulbs Colors reflecting off an object ○ ○ Ex: a red apple reflects red visible light waves Ex: a green shirt reflects green visible light waves Now It’s Your Turn ● ● ● ● You will get into groups of 2 or 3 You will be assigned a section of the electromagnetic spectrum (radio waves, microwaves, infrared Rays, ultraviolet rays, x-rays, gamma rays) You and your group will create a presentation similar to the one you just saw--DUE Friday All groups will present to the class on Friday
