Tutor: Edward Parker
Venue: Kew Gardens
This popular course is designed to explore ways of
producing stunning photographs of trees. It will include
tuition on how to photograph entire trees as well as
details of bark and leaves. In addition it will look at how
using different techniques – such as using directional

most out of your own digital equipment.
This course is designed for people who have a camera
and would like to know the basics such as how to set
the camera up to guarantee sharp, well exposed images
almost every time. It will explain some of the basic
principles of photography such as focus, exposure and

such as to how to download and store images and some
advice on basic processing. The majority of the time
will be spent practicing techniques by actually using the
cameras out in the beautiful gardens at Kew. There will
be many opportunities to ask questions and review your
own images, and those taken by the group, as well an
opportunity to learn a host of top tips.

the camera’s limitations or how to use them as part of
the image making process.
During the course basic instruction will be given as to
how to download, store and enhance the digital images

Kew
Wakehurst
Awarded World Heritage site status in 2003, the Royal
Botanic Gardens, Kew is one of the most beautiful and
historic gardens in the country. Its 300 acres contain a
wealth of living plant material as well as comprehensive
collections of preserved plant specimens,
ethnobotanical products and artefacts, botanical
paintings and books. It is situated 10 miles from the
centre of London and is served by mainline trains from
Waterloo or by underground (District Line).
Wakehurst is a beautiful woodland garden owned by the
National Trust but leased to and managed by Kew. It
is set in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty on the
rolling High Weald of West Sussex and is also home to
the Millennium Seed Bank which opened in summer
2000. Wakehurst is 15 minutes from junction 10 of the
M23, just north of Ardingly on the B2028. The nearest
train station is Haywards Heath.
The majority of the Kew courses are held in the
Education Centre based in Museum No. 1. This grade II
listed building, opened to the public after refurbishment
in 1998, is superbly equipped for our varying courses
and overlooks the magnificent Palm House.
The Field Study Centre is surrounded by woodland and
makes a very tranquil location for the courses held here.
Other courses are based in the Millennium Seed Bank
or in the Mansion, built from Sussex sandstone in 1590
for Edward Culpeper, distant relative of Nicholas, the
famous herbalist.
