WELCOME TO
CANTERBURY
CHRIST CHURCH
UNIVERSITY
We’re delighted you’ve chosen to visit us and find out more about
our Canterbury campus. Whether you’re here on an Open Day, or are
visiting us independently, we hope you will enjoy discovering for yourself
some of the things that have made our current community of around
20,000 students choose to study with us. As a modern university, we
pride ourselves on our friendly and welcoming atmosphere and strong
community spirit, as well as our record for academic excellence.
This guide focuses on our campus and facilities, but we hope that, if
you’re visiting from outside the area, you’ll also take time to explore our
City. Canterbury, famous of course for its Cathedral, is a European City
of world-class heritage and culture with a busy and vibrant city centre,
hidden gardens and tranquil riverside walks – and as well as being under
an hour from London, is also just a short journey from the coast.
This guide is designed to help you explore the different buildings and
facilities that make up our Canterbury Campus. Walking directions will
help you find your way around, and information and tips will help you
to get a flavour of what will be on offer to you as one of our students.
I hope you have a lovely visit.
Frances, Student Recruitment

in the 2013 National Student Survey league table!
ST GEORGE’S CENTRE
St George’s was opened in 2012 and is home to our
Students’ Union and our newest accommodation.
St George’s was designed in consultation with our own
students, right down to the fixtures and fittings, to make
sure it would provide everything they needed. The Students’
Union offers the opportunity to join many clubs and societies
as well as access to our welfare officers who are another
source of support to our students.
ST GEORGE’S STUDENT
ACCOMMODATION
On Open Day, some of our students will open
their doors to visitors so that you can view the
accommodation.
>>
Our main campus was built on land
that formed the outer precincts of
St Augustine’s Abbey (circa AD602)
and is located in a UNESCO World
Heritage Site.
ST GEORGE’S CENTRE TO THE OLD SESSIONS HOUSE | 5 minutes’ walk
Turn right leaving St George’s, cross at the pedestrian crossing and turn right, walking past
Waitrose on your left. At the corner, turn left into Lower Chantry Lane. Cross at the pedestrian
crossing, follow the road to the roundabout then round to the right. Cross at the next

Old Sessions House used
to be Canterbury’s Court
House and you can see
the old court room in one
of the lecture theatres.
Beneath the building are
the old holding cells. In
early 2014 the University
also bought the prison site
next door, and this will be
converted and opened as
University space in 2015.
THE OLD SESSIONS HOUSE
(also known as TOSH)
Old Sessions House is our main reception on campus. It is home to the Faculty of
Education, and holds two main teaching spaces – a lecture theatre to your left as you
come in through the automated doors and a hall opposite the coffee shop. On the doors
will be a timetable, if the room is free – feel free to have a look around the teaching space.
If you’re hoping to study a sports-related course, or just because keeping fit is
your thing, you could take a quick detour now to look around our Sports Centre.
CHRIST CHURCH SPORTS CENTRE
Our Sports Centre is a modern facility featuring
a fully equipped sports hall, fitness suite and
sport and exercise studio. It provides staff and
students at the University with a wide range
of fitness and wellbeing opportunities as well
as the ability to improve athletic or sports
performance.
The specialist facilities also support our
students on Physical Education and Sport and
Exercise courses, providing an ideal venue for
performance analysis and research.

Walk through the reception area and make your way through the automatic doors to the left of
the Reception desk to the outside. To your left you will see St Augustine’s Abbey and Canterbury
Cathedral. Continue down the slope and through the parking area. On your right hand you will

FISHER GREEN TO ANSELM
Follow the path past Fisher Tower and this will take you to a grassy area called Fisher
Green. Cross the green using the pathway. Follow the path round to the left and on
your right is Anselm Studios. Enter through the automatic door at the end of the path
way. Turn right and enter into Anselm building.
On this floor in Anselm
Building are; The Anselm
Studios, The Chapel, The Food
Court and Touchdown III,
Touchdown Express and
The Security Office.
ANSELM BUILDING
Anselm Studios are immediately to your right as you come into Anselm. This new facility,
opened in September 2013, is one of our main performance spaces, providing two flexible
studios perfect for theatre, dance, drama and music. One is a modern studio equipped with
theatre-standard drapes, a lighting rig and sound system. The second is a dance studio with
sprung floor, mirrors, sound system and full sound-proofing.
11
The Chapel is immediately to your left as you come into
Anselm. The Chapel is led by our team of Chaplains who
support our staff and students of all faiths. They in turn
are supported by our Inter Faith Council, and manage a
range of other facilities including quiet rooms, Muslim
prayer rooms and a Buddhist meditation room. They can
also advise Hindi, Sikh, Jewish and students of other faiths
where to find their nearest place of worship.
The Food Court, Touchdown III and Touchdown
Express – The Food court is at the far end
of Anselm with doors either side of the lift.
Freshly cooked hot and cold food is served here
throughout the day. Touchdown III is set within the
Food Court and Touchdown Express is next to the
Security office for cold drinks and snacks.
The Security Office. Our Security team monitors the
campus 24 hours a day and is available at all times
should there be an emergency on campus. There
are also security staff based in Augustine House, St
George’s and in all off-campus accommodation.
>>
All food and drink served
in the Food Court and
the Touchdown Cafés is
subsidised.
ANSELM TO THE DUCK POND
To access the lower ground floor you can walk down the spiral staircase which is accessible
via the automatic door opposite the Security Office. Alternatively, you can take the lift located
outside the Food Court. When you come out of the lifts turn right through the automated doors.
If you visit in the summer you may well spot some
of our resident ducks and ducklings.
12
This grassy area is a popular
place for students to study and
socialise in the warmer weather.
It is also used for social events
and a marquee is located here for
the summer ball. Acts in recent
years include Labrynth, The
Hoosiers and Professor Green.
Our Students’ Union works hard
each year to organise a great
event with popular acts.
Canterbury Christ Church
students automatically receive
a 10% discount on all books.
BOOKSHOP
The University Bookshop stocks all
books that are on the approved
reading list as well as stationery,
computer accessories and Christ
Church gifts.
Make your way through into Laud Building
via the automatic doors. On your left is the
entrance to the University Bookshop.
Opposite the entrance to the Bookshop you
enter the Touchdown Café. To your left there’s
also an additional i-zone point that is staffed
Monday to Friday.
Continue straight on through the automatic
doors. On your left is the Erasmus building
which is home to the Vice-Chancellor’s
office, the Graduate School and academic
departments including English and Language
Studies. Continue down the path and on your
left you’ll see the Maxwell Davies Building.
MAXWELL DAVIES
LAUD
The Maxwell Davies Building is
named after Sir Peter Maxwell
Davies, Master of the Queen’s
Music and Patron of St Gregory’s
Centre for Music. This is a
performing and rehearsal space
dedicated to our Music and
Performing Arts Students. In
front of Maxwell Davies building
is an outside performing space.
Before we built St George’s Centre, Maxwell
Davies building was our Student Union
Building for 25 years!
Opposite Maxwell Davies is the Powell Building.
13
POWELL
The Powell Building is essential
for our Film, Radio and Television
and Media students. Located
here are a multi TV Studio,
Control Room, Film Editing
Facilities and Radio Studios. It also
holds the BBC Radio Kent Suite.
And C3U radio, our own radio
station, broadcasts from here.
The Powell Building is named after the late director Michael Powell. The
building was opened by his wife, Thelma Schoonmaker, the Oscar-winning
editor, and honorary graduate of the University.
We’re committed to promoting sustainability and have invested
in improving our facilities for sustainable travel. So you’ll find
bike racks and shower facilities around the campus.
>>
Keeping the Powell Building on your right,
take the road that runs along the left side of
the building.
To your left is Coleridge. This historic
building is home to the Department
of Music and Performing Arts. Its
beautifully kept gardens provide a
peaceful spot on campus.
>>>
Next to Coleridge, as you continue along the road, is the Johnson building. This
houses many of our Health and Social Care courses.
To visit the St Gregory’s Centre for Music, continue straight on, exit the campus
through Gate 1 and cross the road. You will see the entrance to St Gregory’s to
your left.
To continue the campus tour without visiting St Gregory’s, turn right at the end of
the Powell building.
14
St Gregory’s Centre for Music is
an historic former church, which
now provides a beautiful space to
enjoy live music. Sympathetically
refurbished in 2012, with superb
acoustics and professional lighting
rig, it seats 150.
ST GREGORY’S
CENTRE FOR MUSIC
Our students, staff, and members of
the public enjoy a regular programme
of lunchtime and evening concerts here
during term time. The performances on
offer range from student-led ensembles to
internationally acclaimed artists. The worldrenowned Maggini Quartet is our quartet
in residence.
>>
Return to the campus via Gate 1. The first building on your left is the Ramsey
Building. Keeping it on your left, walk to the end of the building, then take the path
to your left, between the Ramsey and Powell buildings.
INVICTA AND RAMSEY
Canterbury Christ
Church has been
ranked 17 out of 143
universities in the
People and Planet
Green League this
year, receiving a First
Class award for the
3rd year running.
In front of you, you will see one of our blocks of on campus
accommodation. These blocks are called Thorne and Fynden. On your
left, opposite Thorne and Fynden, is our Jubilee Orchard.
The Jubilee Orchard is a conservation area that encourages
butterflies and wild plants. This area was developed to
encourage biodiversity as part of our 50th Jubilee celebrations
and was opened by David Bellamy.
>>
Next to the Jubilee Orchard is Ramsey Building, home to
our Business School. Walk along the path, keeping Ramsey
and the Orchard on your left. At the end of the Ramsey
building, follow the path round to the right. You will find
a square with a shaded seating area, and greenhouses on
your right which belong to our science courses.
The building now on your left is Invicta, the base for all of
our Computing courses, which specialise in software and
computer design.
15
>>
INVICTA TO LAUD
Walk past the greenhouses and through the automatic doors. This will take you into
the Olive Garden. If you follow the path around to the left, the next set of automatic
doors will take you back into the Laud Building with the i-zone point and Touchdown
Café, where you can rest your feet and enjoy a drink and a snack before heading off to
explore further afield!
If you’re visiting on an Open Day, you’ll be able to visit the Science labs here.
>>
If you’re hoping to study a health course and are visiting on Open Day, visit the Skills
Labs. Take the Postern gate exit from the campus (see map on page 18) and walk along
Monastery Street. Turn right into Church Street St Pauls. At the junction with Lower
Bridge Street, you’ll find the Skills Labs on your right.
Beyond the campus
you’ll find a wealth of
other places to explore.
Using the City Map on
p20 head into the town
centre to discover the
historic Cathedral
- one of the world’s
most famous buildings.
SIDNEY COOPER
GALLERY
>>
On Canterbury’s High Street, head north
towards the Westgate area of the city to find our
art gallery – the Sidney Cooper Gallery. Follow
the main street past the Beaney House of Art
and Knowledge, Canterbury’s public library and
art museum, and over the bridge where you’ll
find opportunities to take a boat ride along the
river Stour, running right through the middle of
the city. You’ll find the Sidney Cooper Gallery on
your right, about 100m past the river.
The Sidney Cooper is a fantastic
gallery space in which national
and international artists, as well
as staff and students from the
University, exhibit throughout
the year.
Exhibitions are often accompanied by
lectures and workshops inviting the
public to get involved in the creative
process and interact with the gallery.
The building was originally designed to house
an art school founded in 1882 by the famous
British cattle painter, Thomas Sidney Cooper.
Rupert Bear creator, Mary Tourtel, was one of
the school’s most famous students, receiving
lessons on landscape and animal painting there.
16
The building has been used for a variety
of purposes over the years. But it was
Sidney Cooper’s wish that the building
was used for artistic endeavour, and its
renovation by the University revitalises
that vision. As well as the gallery, the
original painting studio is now used by
our students.
There’s been a
tradition of learning
on this site for over
800 years.
CITY AND
AREA HIGHLIGHTS
If you’ve got time to explore Canterbury, there’s plenty to see as
well as the Cathedral. Next door to our campus is the historic
St Augustine’s Abbey, on whose original grounds our campus
is built.
As well as river tours, there are opportunities to take walking tours
of the City, and you can pick up information in the Visitor Centre
– you’ll find it in the Beaney House of Art and Knowledge on the
High Street.
Some of our favourite highlights are the Dane John Gardens
(why not take a picnic?), shopping in either Whitefriars (great for
high street favourites) or King’s Mile (individual and designer).
Canterbury is full of restaurants and cafés, many of them
specialising in locally-sourced food, and offering a wide range of
cuisines – lovely places to rest after your walk, and just watch the
world go by.
If you’re visiting for the weekend, you might want to head for the
beach. It’s closer than you might think!
Between them, Whitstable and Herne Bay have something for
everyone: water sports, history, shopping, walking or just relaxing
on the beach. Charming cafés, pubs, great restaurants and
independent, quaint shops all serve to provide an unspoilt charm.
They’re both easy to get to by car or bus.
Slightly further afield, enjoy the sandy beaches of Broadstairs and
Margate (don’t forget to visit the Turner Contemporary and take a
turn around the Old Town, packed with vintage shops), Ramsgate’s
marina, and maybe pay a visit to our Broadstairs campus.
