It's not very far from here. You take 7th Street to Hill Street. Turn left on Hill Street. Stay on Hill Street until you get to Chinatown. Let's park the car here. We are only a block from the center of Chinatown. L.A.'s Chinatown is the cultural center for many Chinese-Americans. There are many restaurants and interesting shops here. Notice the mural on that building. There are a number of banks on Broadway, too. Broadway is a very busy street. It is 5:00 p.m. now. The traffic is getting heavy. People are leaving work. It's time to go home. There's City Hall to the south. Here's a family on vacation in Los Angeles. They are all wearing shorts because it is a warm day. There are both old and new buildings along Broadway. The Chinatown Plaza is one of the newest shopping centers in Chinatown. There are also many grocery stores and herb pharmacies here. That is Elysian Park up Broadway to the north. We are going to go there in a few minutes and watch the sun go down. This little restaurant is open. The boy is eating with chopsticks. Let's go back to the car and go north on the Pasadena Freeway to Elysian Park. It isn't far. It's only about a mile from Chinatown. Now we are in the hills of Elysian Park. The sun is beginning to set in the west. There's downtown to the south. Just north of downtown below us is Dodger Stadium. The Dodger baseball team plays here from April to September. The sky is becoming orange. There's going to be a beautiful sunset this evening. It's time to rest and relax now. Tomorrow morning we are going to start our tour again. 37 Library License #115L Licensed by Video Language for duplication and site use by patrons. Please see License for name and address of licensed library site/s. The sun is coming up in the east. It's another beautiful day in Los Angeles. This is Elysian Park in the early morning. You see that many people drive through the park on their way to work downtown. Those are the San Gabriel mountains behind the park in the distance. There's Dodger Stadium again at the eastern end of the park. There are many kinds of trees in the park. There are eucalyptus, pines and palms. People like to jog and hike on the roads in the park. That mountain is the highest mountain in the San Gabriel's. It is over 10,000 feet high. People ski there when it snows a lot. There is a lot of snow in the mountains this winter. The skiers are happy! Well, let's get back in the car and continue our tour. On the other side of Elysian Park, just a few miles from downtown, is Lawry's California Center. It is one of the most beautiful places in L.A. to have lunch or dinner. Let's take a quick look around. The fountains, flowers, and plants in the garden make this a wonderful place to relax during a break from work, or anytime. Let's come back here for lunch soon. How about dinner too? From May to December they serve dinner outside. There is Mexican music, too. Let's just listen to the fountains and relax for a few seconds. That's a cactus plant. What a variety of plants here at the California Center! We are going to come back here again for a longer tour of the gardens and buildings. Let's get back on the road. We're going to take the Golden State Freeway north to Griffith Park. This is one of the busiest freeways in the state of California. Now we are arriving at Griffith Park. This is the Los Feliz Street entrance. Griffith Park is the largest city park in the country. Griffith Park has something for everyone. It has an excellent zoo. Children love to bike and play in the park. Adults like to play here, too. Of course everyone likes to rest, relax, and sometimes sleep in the park. It's also a place for lovers. Picnics are always a lot of fun here, too. 38 Library License #115L Licensed by Video Language for duplication and site use by patrons. Please see License for name and address of licensed library site/s. These children are having a good time on their horses. They are riding their horses fast. There are over 43 miles of horse trails in the hills of Griffith Park. She's riding her horse more slowly than the others. Look at the little train! He's thirsty. He's getting a drink of water. They're buying tickets for a ride on the little train. Now they're waiting in line for the train to arrive. She's looking at the prices. Here comes the train. Both children and adults like to ride the train. There's an Olympic-size swimming pool next to this building with the red tile roof. It's open during the summer. Of course there's lots of grass to play on everywhere. Do you play tennis? We don't have the time to stop and play now, but now you know where the courts are when you want to come back. Let's move on. We have much more to see in Griffith Park. From the Observatory we're going to see all of the western and southern half of Los Angeles. Let's go there. That's the Observatory on the hill. We're going by the Greek Theater on our way to the Observatory. They have wonderful outdoor concerts here. Those men are hiking to the observatory. Here we are. What a view! Again, those are the San Gabriel mountains to the northeast. Pasadena is just below the mountains. This is the Roosevelt golf course. It's just one of five golf courses in the park. Here's another view of Mount Baldy, the highest mountain in the San Gabriels. There are many miles of roads throughout the park with excellent views of Los Angeles. This is the Observatory and Planetarium. There are science exhibits inside. In the Planetarium theater, there are laser shows every day of the week. John C. Austin designed this building in 1935. Let's see L.A. from the Observatory. That's downtown to the east. That's the Los Feliz area right in front of us. That hill about 35 miles to the south is the Palos Verdes Peninsula. We are now looking at Hollywood just below the hills in front of us. Do you see the blue Pacific beyond the buildings? 39 Library License #115L Licensed by Video Language for duplication and site use by patrons. Please see License for name and address of licensed library site/s. Let's look closer at West Los Angeles. Here we see Beverly Hills and Century City. Beyond Century City you see Santa Monica. Do you see the ocean now? It's a darker blue than the sky. There's Marina Del Rey along the coast. The tall office buildings are along Wilshire Boulevard. Wilshire Boulevard goes 20 miles from downtown L.A. to the beach at Santa Monica. The streets, buildings, ocean, hills, and mountains are all part of Los Angeles. Look at the variety of houses in the hills. That's the San Fernando Valley on the other side of the hill to the north. The Valley is Los Angeles, too. Over 1,000,000 people live in the Valley. That's Universal Studios behind the houses. Many people try to build their own "castles" in the Hollywood Hills. Hollywood!! Is it real or is it just fantasy? We know that the Hollywood sign is real. That is the Western Canyon road. It's about three miles long. It takes you from the Observatory to Hollywood. Let's take a closer look at Century City. It is one of Los Angeles' "new" downtowns. There are really many "centers" in L.A. On our way to Hollywood, let's stop first for a short hike in Ferndell. The morning is an especially nice time to walk in Ferndell. Listen! What do you hear? Do you hear the birds? Do you hear the water? Do you hear footsteps? Do you hear the city? Let's come back here for a picnic soon. 40 Library License #115L Licensed by Video Language for duplication and site use by patrons. Well, it isn't bad going down, but coming up isn't any fun. It's good for you. You need the exercise, Richard. You're getting a little fat. Are you kidding? I think that he's a little too thin. Well, not too thin, but certainly not too fat, Ann. I remember when Richard was a lot heavier than he is now. When? About three years ago, right after his divorce. That's right. Before I learned how to cook, I lost 35 pounds. Did your wife cook all your meals? Almost all. Well, you certainly weren't a very liberated husband, were you? Well, I am very liberated now. I'm completely free. And he knows how to cook. He even cooks for me from time to time. Really? Yes. When I was in Chicago last summer he cooked for me many times. That's right. Well, Richard, if you decide to stay in Los Angeles I want you to invite me over for dinner. O.K. Let's talk about this again after I decide to stay. Don't let me forget about it. Don't worry. I'm going to remind you. (At Susan's car. Susan opens the car door for Richard.) Susan: Richard: Susan: Richard: Get in. I see you are quite liberated, Susan. What do you mean? When did you get it? Last year, in February. Where did you buy it? At a used car lot downtown. What year is it? It's a '79. How many miles does it have on it? It has about 65,000 miles. Check the speedometer. Yep. That's right. 65,278 miles. It's in great condition. You take good care of your car. I try to. I wash it once a week and usually check the oil every month. How often do you change the oil? I try to change it every 3,000 miles. Do you change the oil yourself? Usually, if I have the time. You L.A. women really are liberated! Do you change your oil, Richard? Are you kidding? I never have enough time. What are you talking about, not enough time? Do you think that Susan has more time than you do? Well, I guess not. I just don't like to change the oil. Do you know how to change it? Well, ... Ah ha! O.K., O.K. So we all like to do different things, so what? That's right, Susan, but it bothers me when men think that they have less time than women do. Ann, don't worry what men think. Richard, do you worry what women think about men? Park over there. It's cheaper than this lot. How much cheaper? Well, this lot is $1.00 an hour and that one over there is only $.75 an hour. But it's farther away from the restaurant, isn't it? Not very. Are you afraid of a little exercise? I just don't want all of you to complain when we walk a mile to the center of Chinatown. Come on, Richard. You really are getting used to Los Angeles. What do you mean? You like to drive and don't like to walk. (All laugh) Susan: Ann: Susan: Ann: Susan: Ann: Susan: Ann: Richard: Ann: I don't agree with you, Ann, about people from L.A. Well, it's true, isn't it? Nobody wants to walk anywhere here. Everyone wants to drive. Without a car people in L.A. go crazy. Well, not exactly. Lots of people bike, skate, and jog along the beach. People hike in the mountains nearby and swim in the ocean. That's right, but how many people really jog or even walk nowadays? A lot of people. They get up early, go to the gym, jog, exercise, take a shower and then go to work. How do they get to the gym? Sometimes they bike to the gym. Rarely, usually they drive. O.K., O.K. Stop the argument. I like the lifestyle in L.A. You do whatever you want to do. Well, maybe. (All get out of the car) 61 Library License #115L Licensed by Video Language for duplication and site use by patrons. Please see License for name and address of licensed library site/s. Susan: Ann: Richard: Are you getting hungry? Yeah, I am. So am I. Richard: Ann: So, where's a good restaurant? The best restaurant in Chinatown is a couple of blocks from here. Let's go there. Richard: (Joe comes up from behind Susan and covers her eyes with his hands.) Joe: Susan: Joe: Susan: Guess who? Who is it? Guess. I don't know. (Joe takes his hands away from her eyes.) Susan: Joe: Susan: Joe: Susan: Richard: Joe: Susan: Joe: Ann: Joe: Susan: Joe: Richard: Joe: 62 Joe! How are you? What are you doing here? I just got off work and was hungry and wanted some Chinese food, so I came here. I hear that there's a great place not far from here called Mandarin Place. Yeah. In fact, we're going there right now. Would you like to go with us? Yeah, I would. Joe, I'm sorry I didn't introduce you to my friends. I want you to meet Richard. Richard, this is Joe. Good to meet you. Nice to meet you, too. And, Joe, this is Ann. Good to meet you. Nice to meet you. Susan, I called you yesterday, but you weren't home. Where were you? I was with Richard and Ann all yesterday. Richard arrived from Chicago yesterday morning. Did you show him all around L.A.? She showed me a lot of downtown L.A., the Music Center, etc. Well, Richard, how do you like L.A. so far? Library License #115L Licensed by Video Language for duplication and site use by patrons. Please see License for name and address of licensed library site/s. Richard: Joe: Richard: Joe: Richard: I love it. Susan and Ann are showing me some very interesting spots. Is this your first time in L.A.? No, it isn't. I was here when I was five years old. I doubt that you remember very much from that visit. I only remember the beach, the mountains, and Disneyland. We don't have many mountains near Chicago. (All laugh) Ann: Richard: Joe: Richard: Joe: Susan: Ann: Susan: Richard: Susan: Ann: Susan: Richard: Susan: But you do have the tallest building and some of the most beautiful architecture in the world there in Chicago. That's right. But it's a lot warmer here in the winter than there. I don't miss Chicago at all in the winter. It's pretty hot here in the summer, isn't it? Sometimes, but with air conditioning in all the buildings, it's no problem. If you live near the beach, that's the best. It's much cooler there in the summer than downtown. But it's more expensive to live right on the beach. Let's go! O.K., Joe, I want you to go over there by that fountain. I want to take your picture with Ann. What about me? Oh yeah, you too, of course. Richard, don't stand next to Ann. Stand on Joe's left. Is this all right? Stand a little closer to Joe. How do we look? Fine. All right, everybody smile! (She takes the picture.) Richard: Susan: O.K. Where's that restaurant? How long does it take to get there from here? About two minutes. Let's go! (On the way to the restaurant, Ann is walking with Joe and Susan and Richard are walking together.) 63 Library License #115L Licensed by Video Language for duplication and site use by patrons. Please see License for name and address of licensed library site/s. Richard: Susan: Richard: Susan: Richard: Susan: Did you say that Bill was in New York? Yes, he's in New York now. How long is he going to stay there? For another two months. He has a lot of business there now. Are Ann and Bill still seeing each other? Not really. They're just friends now. (Now Richard and Joe are walking together and Ann is walking with Susan.) Ann: Susan: Ann: Susan: Ann: Susan: Is Joe married? No. He's single. Does he have a girlfriend? Not right now. Joe and I went out together a few times last year, but we're just good friends now. How often do you get together? About twice a month. (Everyone is back together.) Susan: Joe: Richard: Joe: Ann: Richard: Well, here's the restaurant. This seems a little expensive, doesn't it? Yes, but I'm on vacation. It's O.K. with me. I don't think I have enough money with me for this place. That's O.K. I have enough money for you. Pay me back some other time. Yeah, don't worry about it. I have extra money, too. Let's go in. (All go into the restaurant.) 64 Library License #115L Licensed by Video Language for duplication and site use by patrons. Please see License for name and address of licensed library site/s.
