20 to seek Yam crowns Sat.
New North Carolina Yam Festival royalty are to be crowned
Saturday, with the annual pageant on track despite the massive devastation of Hurricane
Matthew in the past few days,
event chair Suzette Leonard said
Tuesday.
Power was restored to South
Columbus High School late
Monday afternoon, clearing
what would have been a major
obstacle for the scheduled 6 p.m.
pageant.
All but two of the 20 scheduled
contestants are local, Leonard
said, with one from the Nichols
area, hard hit by post hurricane
flooding this week; the other
from Wilmington, which suffered less from Matthew than
many inland areas.
“I’ll be trying to get up with
them and see how they are doing,” Leonard said.
Admission to the pageant is
$8 at the door, which covers a
program. Visiting queens, with
a crown, will be admitted free.
