INTRODUCTION
EL CIVICS EDUCATION UNIT
(Beginning Levels Only)
This guide will take you through the Education Objective 13.4. The
objective is to: “Interact with educational institutions including schools for
children and schools or agencies with programs for adult learners.”
There are three tasks for this assessment.
In Task 1, using a school or agency map, BH students will respond
to the examiner’s 8 questions by giving directions orally on how to
get from place to place (e.g., Examiner question: “How do I get to
the office from the cafeteria?” Note: BL students only need to find
the location on the map and state the name.
There are several teaching activities to achieve the objective. These are
suggestions only and can be adapted to meet your students’ specific needs.
Page 4: The first page of Task 1 contains a suggested list of activities and
materials.
Page 5: School Map. To be used during the assignment.
Page 6: Location Practice. Students practice finding places on the map.
Pages 7-8: Giving Directions. Students practice giving directions to each
other. Higher level students have additional practice.
Page 9: Partner Activity. Students are put in pairs. Students ask each other
for the missing information and write the information on the map.
Page 10: Education Rubric: Task 1– For BH students, the task is worth 16
points which will be added to the Task 2 Rubric for the final score. For BL
students, the task is worth 8 points.

REMINDER - The activities in this packet are meant to be suggestions for your
use on completing the objectives. These additional assessments are not meant
to be “additional work for you and your students.” They are to be incorporated
into your regular classroom activities.
In Task 2, students will write a note to a school or agency regarding
an absence. The note will include 7 pieces of information. (2 pts.
each, 18 possible). BL students will fill in an absence note form
which lists the 7 pieces of information the student must fill in (e.g.
date, name of student, etc.). BL students will only be evaluated on
content. (1 pt. each, 7 possible)
Page 11: The first page of Task 2 contains a suggested list of activities and
materials.
Page 12: Sample Note. Students preview an example of the note they will be
writing during the lesson.
Page 13: Flashcard Template. Students practice writing a note from a
flashcard.
Page 14: Cloze Activity. Students practice completing a note to reinforce the
different components.
Pages 15: Assessment. Students are given directions to complete a note to
their instructor explaining an absence. Please note that Beginning Low
students will not be evaluated on spelling or grammar.
Page 16: Education Rubric: Task 2. The task is worth 18 points.

In Task 3, students will fill out an authentic form with a reduced
number of sections that student needs to complete. This can be
accomplished in a variety of ways such as: (1) highlighting the
sections of a completed form that students need to fill out or (2) giving
a reduced form which includes only those sections of the authentic
application that are assigned to BL-BH students.

This number should be explained to students. The scores a student
receives on Tasks 1,2, and 3 will be added together for the final score.
If a Low Beginning student gets a score of 10 on the Task 1 rubricfor
example, the student only needs to earn 5 more points on Task 2 and 5
points on Task 3 to pass the Education 13.4 O bjective.
