Can you believe that it is almost five weeks since our trip to the Isle of Wight in September? I hope
it’s not a too distant memory particularly with all the work the children have been doing in class!
Year 6 is an extremely busy year but I also like to include some trips that the children will look
forward to and enjoy as part of their last year at primary school.
Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre : Monday 14th January 2013
I would very much like to incorporate a visit to The Globe Theatre in London on the same day as
the Young Voices at the O2.
The Globe stands a few hundred yards from its original site. The rebuilding of the iconic building
stems from the founding of the Shakespeare's Globe Trust. This visit is relevant to our
curriculum topic on Shakespeare and the children will be given a tour of this amazing theatre.
Young Voices at O2 : Monday 14th January 2013
Last year was the second time we had taken Y6 children to the 02 London to take part in the Young Voices
Concert and we had such a fantastic time that we have booked to go again with our current Y6 children.
The school has covered the cost for the children and all we ask is your permission for your child to attend
and £11 towards the cost of a T shirt and torch for the event, plus £5 towards the coach. It will be a long
day, leaving school at 7am and not returning to Swindon until after midnight, but children may have a
lazy return to school on Tuesday morning, but we would like all children to be in class before lunchtime
to receive their morning attendance mark.
At an additional cost which is optional, families can purchase tickets at £22 each to book seats at the O 2 to
enjoy the unique and amazing experience. Anyone purchasing tickets are very welcome to join us on the
coach at a cost of £5 each (but will not have access into the O2 until the gates open) or you may choose to
make you own way to/from the O2 to watch the concert.
We do not wish to burden you with more cost at the moment but we do want to pre-book any family
tickets before the deadline. So please indicate on the reply slip and return by Tuesday 23rd October, and
we will order tickets on your behalf. We will not require payment until 10 th December 2012, or if you
prefer, you can spread the cost over the next two terms, but all payments must be in by 7th January 2013.
PGL Activity Weekend : 21st -23rd June 2013
We are delighted to confirm that we have provisionally secured an activity weekend for children in
Year 6 from Friday 21st June until the evening of Sunday 23rd June 2013. The cost of the trip will be
£120.00 which includes 2 nights/3 days at PGL and the coach. We believe this is an excellent offer,
and a fabulous way to celebrate their final year in Abbey Meads Primary School.
As a school we have always used a reputable centre for this type of adventure weekend and this year is
no different as we have again booked through PGL and reserved the same venue that we used the last
couple of years, namely Barton Hill, Torquay.
Close to Torquay and within easy reach of the M5, Barton Hall offers
accommodation in the main house and in en suite chalets. The impressive
facilities include an indoor activity zone, heated outdoor swimming pool and a
newly built lake.
The children will be split into small groups and experience a full range of activities which we will be
selecting prior to the trip. Upon leaving school on the Friday morning we travel to Lydiard Park for
activities and lunch. We then travel to Torquay arriving at the Centre on Friday afternoon where the
children will have time to settle in, meet the instructors, eat an evening meal and enjoy evening
entertainment. On Saturday and Sunday the children will participate in two full days of activities. We
are due to leave the centre at 6pm and arrive back at around 9.45pm on the Sunday evening.
This weekend has become a tradition for Year 6 and whilst we hoped every child would take part on
the Isle of Wight Residential visit to make it financially viable, we can take as many children as we
like to PGL. Therefore although we don’t need to take every child we would like to take the whole of
Year 6 if possible.
I appreciate that financially it is not a good time to request payment but I do require your confirmation
as to whether your child will or will not be going by Tuesday 23rd October in order to secure the
booking. An initial non-refundable deposit of £20 will then be required by 28th January 2013. A trip
payment card will be issued towards the end of next term. Payment must be complete by Monday 10 th
June 2013. Payment can be made by cheque, cash or online either by instalment or in full so long as it
is on a MONDAY and completed by 10th June 2013. Please can I ask that you return the Payment Card
with every cash or cheque payment made to the school.
If your child is eligible for free school meals, or you wish your child to attend but cannot meet the
payment dates given please see Mrs Kewell in the School Office to discuss alternative financial
options.
Summary
I appreciate this is a lot of information to take in, so to sum up the total cost of all trips for your child
will be £136.00 which includes all transport, Globe Theatre, T shirt and Torch plus Young Voices
entry and PGL residential. The only additional cost would be if you wish to purchase extra tickets and
coach for the 02 trip.
