Dear Parents/Carers
The Art Department and a group of Key Stage 4 students are organising an exhibition called ‘The
Elizabethan Open’. This year we will give Year 7 and 8 pupils the opportunity to create a piece of
artwork to be displayed in the exhibition and we would also like to give the opportunity to you as
well.
Every year we have students telling us what talented parents, grandparents, relatives and carers
they have and we felt it was about time we got to see some of this artistic talent.
The event is totally voluntary, so anyone from Year 7 or Year 8 can enter and any of their
parents/grandparents or carers. Both the pupil and the adult in the family can enter together and
support each other as they work or if there is just one of you entering you could monitor the
progress of the artist – for example if the parent/carer is the artist this time round, the pupil could
check they are doing their homework!
We are aiming to hold the exhibition at the same time as the Christmas concert, Wednesday 14
December; opening it up maybe half an hour before the concert starts so you will get chance to
look around the work. We hope you will then join us for the concert to make for a lovely evening
with a short presentation of small prizes for ‘Best of Show’ for each category – Student and Adult.
The KS4 students in charge have devised the themes of MUSIC or LANDSCAPE and the deadline
for entries is Wednesday 7 December (1.00pm).
Examples:
MUSIC
- You could illustrate some favourite lyrics from a song
- Create a picture that you feel represents a particular piece of music
- Draw/Paint a still life of musical instruments.
LANDSCAPE - Can be Urban such as cityscape, street scene etc
- Rural, rolling hills, lonely cottages, farmland and animals.
- Realistic or Abstract.
You might even want to combine the two! Let your creativity and imagination flow!
The artwork can be any medium for 2D work – this can include any drawing and painting media as
well as collage, photography and digital art as long as it is your own. It will need to be on paper or
canvas no larger than A3 size (approximately 30x42cm). Unfortunately, due to the nature of the
display boards, we would prefer the work is not framed. If you wish to window mount or back the
work on card this is fine. Canvases will have string stapled to their back (on the wood frame), but
again, if you want to attach the string yourself, just make it long enough for us to be able to attach it
to the display boards.
We really hope you will enjoy the challenge, both pupils and adults alike. Please fill in and return
the entry slip to give the organisers an idea of numbers. The last slip(s) should be filled in and
delivered with your entry. (Adult entries can be delivered with your child or left in reception for one
of the organisers to collect).
Yours sincerely
Chris Draper
