READING NOTES 33
Your teacher will assign your group
to read one of Sections 33.3 to 33.6.
For your assigned section, you will
take notes on two topics—key
explorers and the impact of the Age
of Exploration—by completing two
world maps.
Key Explorers of the
Age of Exploration
Follow these steps to complete the
map:
1. Identify at least two explorers
who played an important role in
explorations by the country or
countries you read about.
2. Accurately trace the route of each
explorer’s voyage. Label each route
with the explorer’s name.
3. Near each route, add a short
explanation of why the explorer
was important by completing this
sentence: ______________ was
important to exploration by (name
of country) because….

PROCESSING 33
You have been commissioned by a historical society to design a mural
on the Age of Exploration. The outline for the mural, on the opposite
page, is divided into eight sections. The sections represent five continents
(Europe, Africa, Asia, North America, and South America) and three
oceans (Atlantic, Indian, and Pacific).
1. In each section, draw a simple illustration or symbol that represents a
key point about one of these topics:
• important explorers and their routes
• items explorers brought back to Europe from Asia, Africa, or the
Americas, or items they took to these places
• effects of the Age of Exploration on the people of Europe or of
Asia, Africa, or the Americas
Create at least one drawing or symbol for each topic. Put each drawing
in an appropriate section of the mural. For example, you might draw
a horse in North America as an example of something Europeans
brought to the Americas.
2. Complete the mural key by briefly explaining how each drawing or
symbol represents one of the three topics. For example, you might
write, Horse: Spaniards and then other Europeans brought horses to
North America.
