Dilation Project

Dilation Project
Thi~
project will have )'ou eniarging or reducing a picture of your choice.
First. you need 10 get a simple ?lcture to enlarge or reduce. This should be something
~,imple, like a cumic strip drawing. You also need a pencil and a ruler.
The first thing ~ot: will do is draw t: grid onto your original picture. This grid should
have boxes that are 1I2"Xl/2" To measure the grid on to the paper YOU MUST
MEASURE DOWN AND MA RK OFF EVERY 112" ONE SIDE AND THEN
SLIDE THE RULER ACROS~: THE PAPER AND DO THE SAME DOWN THE
OTHER SIDE. If you do this. your grid wi!l be much more accurate. Don't be afraid
to erase mistakes. Now connec: the marks Wilh pencil lines across the original. Do
this carefully, making sure to c.mnect the corresponding points. This will leave you
with a bunch of evenly spaced Jines drawn on your original. Now repeat this process
to the top and bottom of the original until you have an even grid. If you make too
many mistakes you will have t(· srart again. so work carefully. When you have the
grid done put the numbers I-I C. one each, in the boxes across the top and the letters
A-H, one each. in the boxes down the sid.:.
{\ext you need to decide how IT:uch you will eniarge your picture by: 2 times or 3
times larger.
Once you've decided this you n;:ed to put a grid on the paper you are going to enlarge
your original onto. If you do the 2X enlargement. your enlargement grid will be
1"X 1". If you do the 3X enlargement, your enlargement grid will be I.5"X 1.5".
Make these grid~: the same way you put the grid onto the original. Don't forget to put
the number labels across the tor and the letter labels down the side.
Now you have th.e gridded origi nal and the gridded copy paper. Start in the upper
left hand comer of your arigina.; and copy a:lY part of your picture's outline into the
corresponding box on the map hoard. Take extreme care here. Use the coordinate
system: copy EVERYTHING EXACTLY AS IT IS in box Al on your original
INTO box Alan the enlargement grid. Cross out boxes on the original once you are
done with them. This will mini~nize any problems with copying the same box twice.
Hand in both the original and th~~ copy.
