While March
often calls to mind
St. Paddy’s Day,
leprechauns, and
four-leaf clovers, its
name is actually
Roman. Many
historians agree that March is
named for Mars, the Roman god
of war. Some of you may also
know that in ancient Rome, the
calendar year ended in February
and began in March. During that
period, tradition insisted that all
wars cease to celebrate the passing
of one year and the beginning of
another.
In the United States, March is
celebrated as Women’s History
Month. It is a time to reflect upon
the great women in history. We
celebrate and appreciate the
strides that they have made,
exploring our world, making great
discoveries, speaking out against
injustice, and enhancing our
country to the betterment of
mankind. It is also an opportunity
to educate ourselves on the many
women’s rights issues of the past
and those that are still relevant
today.
March is also the
meteorological beginning of
spring. As the days get longer and
warmer, we can look forward to
enjoying our reopened pool on
the 7th floor.
I would like to offer a big
“thank you” to all of our residents
for permitting us to use
Josephine’s Kitchen to host our
annual Employee Awards
Banquet. We had a great night of
Mardi Gras themed fun
recognizing the many staff
members of Belmont Village who
work hard every day to provide
care to our residents.

A Lady Who Lifts
Our Spirits
Jean Davis still lifts our spirits
despite losing her husband of 64
years in 2016.
It’s a unique gift and a tribute
to a happy marriage that might
not have revolved around LSU
football even if it sometimes
seemed that way. Jean was a
teen-aged freshman cheerleader
for the LSU Tigers, beating out a
host of competitors despite not
having a plan or taking any
rehearsal time prior to tryout day.
“I just got out there in front of
the judges, yelled something like
‘Go Tigers’ and jumped around,”
she laughs while hanging out in
the Bistro, her home-away-from
home at Belmont Village. “The
next thing I knew, I was a
cheerleader.
“The only reason I tried out was
because I’d joined a sorority (the
Tri-Delts) and they wanted us to
become involved in campus life.
The only thing I could think of
was to be a cheerleader. I liked
football, although back then LSU
was not the major power it
is today.”
Jean was four years old when
she moved with her parents Alice
and Eddie Moeller and her toddler
sister Jacqueline from St. Louis to
Lake Charles, Louisiana, during
the Depression. Jobs were hard to
come by in 1934 and her dad had
a chance to work in the export
division of a lumber company in
southern Louisiana.
“It was so important to us that
we moved right away,” Jean
recalls. “We packed up what we
could, left the rest behind and
headed to Louisiana.”

Circle of
Friends&
Neighborhood
It’s almost spring! Circle of
Friends would like to introduce
our two new Enrichment Leaders.
As our program continues to grow
we have added to our team! Annie
and Kelsey have joined us and we
are so excited for them to make
our expansion possible. February
was a lot of fun for the residents
and us. We had a Valentine’s
Dance that Circle of Friends and
the neighborhood attended.
Everyone had lots of sweets then
danced their tails off. Mardi Gras
was also last month and we had a
special guest, the Dave Washburn
Trio. His jazz music is always so
wonderful. It was a month full of
parties! In the neighborhood we
have bought two robot cats and a
dog. We had seen a wonderful
article in the New York Times
about how much of a positive
impact one senior center saw from
having these furry companions.
Our new companions purr and
bark and they have the softest fur
that you won’t want to stop
petting! The animals are great at
comforting all of our residents but
especially those who tend to be
more anxious or just need a
friend. If you would like to donate
a cat or dog for therapy for your
loved ones, feel free to contact us
to get information. Many reviews
say it is worth it after seeing their
family member so happy and
engaged. In the neighborhood we
are also working on a new sensory
program. Check back next month
to see the success of our program.
Jean recalls a happy childhood,
swimming and water-skiing in
Lake Charles. “But I don’t fish,”
she says haughtily and pausing for
a few seconds before breaking out
in a smile that makes you laugh.
That’s her style of speaking. Sort
of a female Jack Benny.
At LSU, she met Jack Davis
from Monroe, Louisiana. A
chemical engineering major, Jack
would eventually manage plants
for such firms as DuPont and
Uniroyal, but he first had to serve
at Lackland Air Force Base in San
Antonio. One evening he called
his 20-year-old girlfriend, who by
then was a junior at LSU.
“Are we gonna get married or
what?” Jack barked, as Jean recalls.
“That’s the way he proposed to
me, if you could call it that.”
Nevertheless, Jean acquiesced.
It was the beginning of a
64-year-marriage that produced
five children, 14 grandchildren
and, so far, four
great-grandchildren. After
managing huge chemical plants,
Jack switched careers, and with his
middle son Bert, opened Davis
Sales, which sold parts to cabinet
makers throughout Louisiana.
Jean had her own career, too. She
was the longtime director of the
Children’s Day School at
Broadmoor Methodist Church in
Baton Rouge. She was responsible
for pretty much everything at the
school, including its expansion
from kindergarten-only classes to
high school classes and a Mother’s
Day Out program. When she
retired after building up the
church school for 38 years she
held the title of Director of
Weekday Ministries. A statue was
erected to honor her which
contains Jesus’ invitation to “Let
the children come to me.”
