The Caste System in India Xavier Erickson Nebraska College Preparatory Academy Omaha North High Magnet SChool 2014 University of Nebraska-Lincoln Abstract The caste system is an age old system used to class people into specific social groups. It is important because it is a system that has been used in India for years. There are 4 main castes and then thousands of sub castes. People are classed upon birth and do not have the option to move around in their caste. Conclusion I do agree with what I found researching. The next logical step toward helping India for the greater good is getting rid of the caste system once and for all. It negatively impacts India in many ways that are apparent. Further Research Key Points -It is one of the biggest obstacles in social mobility. (Fitzgerald, 1) -It is still rooted into the culture of India although it was legally abolished in 1949. -Discrimination against lower castes persists not because India’s government condones it, but because poorly enforced laws have failed to move society. (Datta – Ray, 1) -How does the caste system negatively affect their economy? - The role religion plays in the caste system. Works cited -Chopra, Anuj. India Unable to do Away with Caste System.
