Young General of Military Might
BY DAVID WU
EPOCH TIMES STAFF
U
nder the reign of
Emperor Wu (㬎) of
Han, the Han Dynasty
(㻊㛅) saw a vast territorial
expansion as well as a strong
and centralized government.
Although the XiƎngnú (⊰

⤜) were a constant threat
from the north, with the
help of many capable generals, Emperor Wu did not have
to retreat from their attacks.
Instead, he defended against
the Xiongnu many times.
While in the service of Emperor
Wu, Huò Qùbìng (暵⍣䕭)
stood out as the general with
the most glorious military
achievements during decades
of war against the Xiongnu,
A Young, Accomplished
General
Huo Qubing lived a simple,
though somewhat privileged,
childhood and he was always
very eager to learn. Huo’s
uncle, Wèi Qîng (堃曺), was a
famous general, and he taught
Huo all kinds of martial arts,
especially horseback-riding
and archery. At the time, the
Xiongnu were far better at the
latter two skills than the Han
Chinese.
Later, Huo’s family gradually
rose in status when his mother’s sister became empress to
Emperor Wu. By the age of 17,
Huo Qubing demonstrated
outstanding military talent
and wisdom, and thus gained
the favor of the Emperor who
appointed Huo Qubing as his
bodyguard.
In 124 B.C., the emperor
ordered Wei Qing and his
troops to fight the Xiongnu in
what became one of the greatest Han victories against their
northern enemy.
Huo Qubing, was only 19
years old, but he asked the
Emperor to allow him to join
the war. Wei Qing selected a
cavalry of 800 for Huo Qubing to lead. Although this was
his first war, Huo showed no
fear. He out-maneuvered the
enemy and successfully raided
the Xiongnu camps, killing
over 2,000 Xiongnu soldiers.
In this campaign, he ranked
as the top victor and Emperor
Wu rewarded him with the
title “champion duke.” His
name became well known and
Huo Qubing received his own
command.
After engagement in two
major battles with Huo Qub-
ing, the Xiongnu suffered
severe losses in soldiers and
territories, and their morale
slumped. By then, Huo Qubing was as well-regarded as
his uncle, General Wei Qing.
Emperor Wu commissioned
the construction of a luxurious mansion for him as the
reward.
When the mansion was
completed, Emperor Wu sent
for Huo Qubing and presented him with this gift of
honor. However, Huo refused
to accept the Emperor’s gift,
telling him: “How can I settle
down at home while the Xiongnu still attack our country?”
This well-known saying was
passed on through thousands
of years of history, and it summarized Huo Qubing’s dedication to the state and his passion for national defense.
Under such successful Han
campaigns, the military power
of the Xiongnu collapsed, and
the Han Dynasty successfully
gained full control over the
route to the western regions,
developing the “Silk Road,”

which facilitated cultural
and commercial exchanges
between the east and the west.
Sharing Triumph
With His Soldiers
According to legend, once, when
Huo Qubing defeated the Xiongnu with great success, Emperor
Wu rewarded Huo with a jar of
precious wine and had it sent
from the capital city, Cháng 'qn
(qq), to Huo Qubing’s military
camp.
Huo poured the jar of wine
into a creek near the camp so
that all of his soldiers were able
to taste and enjoy it. The valley was full of the wine’s flavor and, thus, the name of the
place was changed to JiȞquán
(惺㱱), meaning “wine spring.”
Huo Qubing was not a very
talkative person, but he was
very brave and wise in battle. He was deemed a military
genius. During the six major
attacks he led against the Xiongnu, hundreds of thousands
of enemy soldiers were killed
or injured.
Honoring a National Hero
Huo Qubing died at the early
age of 24 of a plague-like illness. His life was like a meteor—
short, but glorious.
Emperor Wu held a grand
funeral for him, and buried
him beside the imperial tombs.
In addition, his tomb was decorated with a variety of giant
stone statues in commemoration of his glorious military
achievements.
