FAST TIGER
FACTS
Team Taronga is passionate about
the wild. We know our fundraising
efforts at City2Surf can make a real
difference for critical species on
the brink of extinction both in the
jungles and savannahs, overseas and
closer to home in our own backyards.
Name
Sumatran Tiger
Scientific Name
Panthera tigris sumatrae
THREATS
Habitat destruction for
unsustainable palm oil
& poaching
Conservation
Status
Critically Endangered
Less than 400 wild tigers
As sunlight filters through the
canopy, down to the forest floor it
creates stripes of shadows much
like the tigers coat and markings.
Each tiger’s patterns are unique
like a fingerprint. The perfect
camouflage!
Super
Swimmers
Tigers LOVE water and are fantastic
swimmers, sometimes even
ambushing prey towards water to
shorten the run required!
King of the Jungle
Tigers are the only apex predator
for their region, playing a vital role in
keeping the food chain in check.
Tigers are a symbol of all that is
powerful about nature. Their ROAR
can be heard as far as 3km away!

WILD
THREATS
The Sumatran Tiger is considered
critically endangered due to habitat
loss for unsustainable palm oil
plantations and poaching for the
domestic and international market.
LOSS OF HABITAT
The rapid growth of agricultural
land has
obliterated
97%
 tigers’
original forest habitat,
increasing tiger conflict with villages
and opening the remaining habitat
to poachers. There is no forest left for
Tigers to hide in.
POACHING

Due to the tiger’s reputation as fierce
hunters and powerful creatures,
many tiger body parts are considered
medicinal (no scientific evidence
supports these claims) and their pelts
fetch a high price as trophy items.

TIGERS at
Taronga
Taronga is fortunate to have 5
resident Sumatran Tigers – a trio
of fast-growing cubs called Sakti
(invincible), Kartika (the great) and
Kembali (return) and their majestic
parents Jumilah and Satu.
You can visit the tigers in their brand
new enclosure, set to open in June
2017, for an up-close and immersive
experience about Sumatran Tigers
and the threats they are facing in
the wild.
Other things you can do:
££ Bring reusable shopping bags and refuse plastic bags
when shopping
££ Reduce single-use plastic items in your home and
workplace like plastic cutlery, plastic wrap and packaging
££ Reduce the amount of paper and forest products you
use at home and work (e.g. read on the screen, print double
sided or switch to paperless bills)

FUNDRAISING
 TIGERS
Your fundraising efforts are vital in the fight for a wild future for Sumatran Tigers. Taronga is working
collaboratively with organisations in Sumatra such as Wildlife Protection Units and Wildlife Conflict and Crime
Response Teams to preserve the remaining habitat for tigers and reduce human/animal conflict. The Wildlife
Witness app created in partnership with TRAFFIC also allows on-the-spot reporting of illegal wildlife and wildlife
products trade by any tourist or member of the public to help break the supply chain for tiger products.
Encouraging sustainable palm oil is also critical to preserving tiger habitat and Taronga supports “Don’t Palm Us Off” a campaign to have sustainable palm oil listed as an ingredient on labels so consumers can make informed purchases.
FUNDRAISINg TIPS & TRICKS NEED
HELP?
• Personalise your fundraising page with information about why you are
passionate about tigers and Team Taronga.
• The first donation sets the marker for the rest. Donate to your own
page to show friends you are engaged in the cause and want them to be
too. Your friends and family will give a similar amount to your personal
donation as they care about what you care about!
• Share your fundraising page online through social media. Some of the
facts in this guide will help to engage your friends and family with the cause.
Give us a call or drop us
an email. We’d love to
help you and have
some very experienced
fundraisers on board.
• Consider holding a raffle (get in touch for potential prizes) or tiger movie
night (e.g. Life of Pi, Winnie the Pooh, Tiger Spy in the Jungle).
