Patriots of Color – Scholar in the Park Program One took a bullet on the Lexington Green on the first day of the American Revolution. Another acquitted himself with such bravery at Bunker Hill that no less than fourteen officers signed a petition saluting his heroism. A third fought in both historic battles, then continued his service at engagements in White Plains and Saratoga 174 LIBERTY ST. At least 21 men of color from 11 Massachusetts towns were present on the battle road, the 16-mile running battle from Concord to Boston on April 19, 1775. Less than two months later, at least an additional 103 men of color fought at Bunker Hill. This year, the Friends of Minute Man National Park Patriot’s Day Appeal will be raising funds to not only further research the stories of such patriots, but also to memorialize them in a school teaching unit that will be made available at no cost to teachers via the Park’s website. Your generous contribution will enable us to fund a “Scholar in the Park” – a Boston area teacher who will be hired to develop the teaching unit in conjunction with the Park’s interpretation staff. 100% of funds raised in this appeal will be used on this important education project Friends of Minute Man National Park is dedicated to protecting and preserving Minute Man National Historical Park and increasing the numbers of citizens exposed to the values the Minute Men fought so valiantly to preserve. You follow the news. You know of the budget cuts currently facing our National Parks. Unfortunately, one of the areas that faces cutbacks is the funding of educational outreach programs. Won’t you help us to do our small bit to reverse this trend – especially on such an important and largely untold story? If you are ready to help us educate future generations on this important slice of April 19th 1775, please support the Friends of Minute Man National Park by sending your tax-deductible contribution of $25, $50, $100 or even more today to the 2013 Patriot’s Day Appeal, knowing that every dollar you contribute to this special appeal will go directly to this education project.
