Turn L, alongside wall, then
cutting across pasture at any
indents. Aim to R of some trees
to attain wall again, continuing
straight on when wall turns back
on itself. Follow faint track along
edge, passing several cairns and
enjoying great views of earlier
route. Opposite the disused
quarry across the valley, pick up a
wall, keeping it on your L. Follow
this wall which curves round. As it
starts to drop, head for prominent
path ahead. Turn L along this and
L at a fork, before descending
steeply down to the ‘Waterfalls
Walk’ track.

Because of its
organic origins,
limestone is a
special rock – and the north
east of England, and the
Dales in particular, boast
some of the finest limestone
scenery in Europe.
The foundations for this
extraordinary landscape
were laid down 300 million
years ago, when this part of
the world was a shallow
tropical sea. Over time, shell
debris was compressed and
recrystallised to form
limestone up to 200m deep,
which in turn was covered
later by deposits from a river
delta. Eventually, glaciers
carved out the landscape we
see today, creating the
classic U-shaped valley of
Chapel-le-Dale and the
differing beds of rock that
give Ingleborough its
stepped profile.
The story didn’t end there,
of course, because once the
beds of Great Scar limestone
were revealed, acidic
rainwater seeped into
fractures, slowly eroding
away fissures to leave the
classic limestone pavement,
which consists of clints
(blocks of flat-topped rock)
and grikes (the deep fissures
between them).
The grikes form a unique
habitat, as plants take
advantage of the sheltered
conditions, and here you will
find wood anemones,
bluebells and ramsons,
together with fascinating
ferns such as limestone fern
and rigid buckler fern.
The international
importance of the geology
and wildlife in this area has
led to parts of it becoming a
National Nature Reserve.
