Do you recall times in the garden when, after weeding a row of flowers, you had more energy? Or after
a walk outdoors, you felt more peaceful? If so, you
experienced the therapeutic benefits of horticulture,
and you are one of many who retreat to the garden
to relax, renew energy, create a sense of place, and
restore self-esteem.
Multiple studies show that a plant-filled environment
helps people relax, raises pain tolerance for people
with chronic disorders, and improves moods. One of
these studies found that regular exposure to natural
environments such as gardens helps people recover
from the ill effects of stress more quickly.
Why is that? "Gardens surround us with sensory
feedback very different from that of the urban scene.”
Horticultural therapists use plants to promote health,
well-being, and social contact among people recovering from disabilities, substance abuse, illness, and
other problems.
Research from Kansas State University's Department of Horticulture finds that colorful flowers work
more effectively than green foliage alone to reduce
tension. Seeing them can be a powerful distraction
from stressful thoughts.
“Gardening is an excellent mental workout because
it requires sophisticated brain activity," he explains.
"Learning a new skill, like gardening, helps plow
and nurture new neural connections in the brain."
It is the banks goal to meet your financial needs by
offering a variety of products and solutions.

Plant Day
Plant day is one of our annual customer
appreciation days. First National Bank
likes to bring a little spring inside, when
outside it seems questionable. We provide refreshments, there are drawings
and we give away a complimentary
plant to each customer. Some of our
First National offices will provide a
blood pressure clinic, along with loan
or CD specials. Join us this year for
Plant Day May 1, 2015, at all locations.

Senior Volunteers in America
Senior citizens make up an increasing proportion
of the population of this country. Currently, seniors
comprise approximately 21 percent of the residents
of the United States. This number is only going to
increase over the next twenty to thirty years as the
almost 79 million members of the “Baby-Boomer”
generation mature. With retirement coming earlier
to many in this group, senior citizens today are active, involved, and interested in helping whether it be
through charitable contributions or volunteer time.
According to a recent survey, almost 44 percent of all
people 55 and over volunteer at least once a year and
over 36 percent reported that they had volunteered
within the past month. These older volunteers give
on average 4.4 hours per week to the causes they
support. The 26.4 million senior volunteers gave approximately 5.6 billion hours of their time—a value
of $77.2 billion to nonprofit organizations and other
causes in this country.
Spring House Cleaning
I love any opportunity to de-clutter and organize my
home and life. However, if you are someone that
needs a little motivation, what better to motivate you
than “spring cleaning?” Here are some tips to help
you tackle your life and prepare for a fresh and clean
spring.
Let’s start with your closet. For most people, you can
start to put away those heavy winter clothes. I like
to keep a storage bin that contains my out-of-season
clothes. It frees up space in my closet and helps me
get dressed more quickly in the morning, as I’m only
looking at items I can actually wear.
Next, let’s look at the kitchen. You should do a quick
sweep through your refrigerator and kitchen cabinets. Check to see if you have any expired food, and
toss it.
Finally, go through each room and clear out the clutter. You probably have a stack of magazines and mail
to sort through, expired medications, or empty makeup containers in the bathroom. Sort it into piles of “to
trash” and “to donate.”
Spring cleaning your life? Yep, it’s happening. Take
a moment and browse through your calendar. What
are you spending most of your time doing? Is your
day filled with business appointments, leaving you
with a non-existent social life? Or is your social calendar brimming, but you find you have no time to
work out or spend quality time with your family?
Make a list of priorities for your life and find a way
to fit them in your calendar. You only live once, so
make sure you are spending each day doing things
that are in line with your priorities and goals for life.
I hope you are feeling motivated to do a little spring
cleaning. And have fun with it! Make a day of filling
up winter storage bins, and scheduling a little “me”
time.
