FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S OFFICE:
SBAC Testing Schedule
The SBAC testing window is comprised of three small windows open from March 27 – May 23 .
In order to test all students across testing windows, we have developed a schedule that will test
one grade-level at a time, during testing windows. Our schedule provides two-hour testing blocks
for each grade-level. While individual subtests are not expected to take two hours, we have
included extra time to account for test set-up. In addition, students will be permitted to test
longer than the allotted time if needed. Individual grade-levels will be tested during their
designated two-hour block. While one grade-level is testing, the other two grade-levels will run
on a normal schedule. We anticipate that during testing windows, approximately three classes at
a time will be administered the SBAC on a computer.
While Tolland Public Schools is not participating in the Connecticut Mastery Language Arts and
Math Tests, fifth grade students across the state are required to take the Connecticut Mastery
Science Test,
Our goal in developing an SBAC testing schedule has been to minimize disruption to our typical
school day. Minimizing disruption will entail students attending all specials, inclusive of
technology integration, keyboarding and multi-media research within the library time block.

ELA CAT – English Language Arts Computer Adaptive Test
Math CAT – Math Computer Adaptive Test

A core feature of Smarter Balanced assessments is that they are customized for each student
for a more accurate measurement for every student. To accomplish this, the computer-based
test adjusts the difficulty of questions throughout the assessment based on the student’s
response. If a student answers a question correctly, the next question will be harder; if a
student answers incorrectly, the next question will be easier. This system is called computer
adaptive testing, and it is part of the summative (end-of-year) assessments.
http://www.smarterbalanced.org/assessments/testing-technology/
Math PT – Math Performance Task

Performance tasks measure a student’s ability to demonstrate critical-thinking and problemsolving skills. Performance tasks challenge students to apply their knowledge and skills to
respond to complex real-world problems. They can be best described as collections of
questions and activities that are coherently connected to a single theme or scenario. These
activities are meant to measure capacities such as depth of understanding, writing and
research skills, and complex analysis, which cannot be adequately assessed with traditional
assessment questions. The performance tasks are taken on a computer (but are not computer
adaptive) and will take one to two class periods to complete.

HAPPENINGS IN OUR CLASSROOMS!
GRADE 3 - Third graders are working hard in all areas as usual. Right now, in Math in
Focus we are working on fractions. Students will learn that fractions are parts of a whole, to
name fractions, about equivalent fractions, and about reducing fractions to simplest forms.
Chapter 14 also includes comparing fractions and learning that fractions can be parts of a set.
Students will learn to use bar models to help them answer word problems with fractions. After
that we will be moving on to U.S. customary length, weight, and capacity, and telling time.
Please be sure that your children are practicing their math facts, this helps them in all the areas
we are studying in Math in Focus.
Presently, our language arts unit is on poetry. Third graders are learning about various
types of poetry and will have exposure to many different authors and poetry resources. Our last
unit will focus on fairy tales, both classic and contemporary. Students will read a variety of fairy
tales and will write their own version using a classic framework with a contemporary twist.
We are wrapping up our electricity and magnetism unit. Students have really been
enjoying the hands on activities that they are doing in the science lab. They have been making
circuits, learning to use switches to make light bulbs light, and experimenting with insulators
and conductors, as well as, other self-guided investigations.
In April, we will start our social studies unit about Tolland in the 1800s. Students will
learn about Tolland and study how the town changed from the 1700s. Each third grader will
take on the role of a child who lived in Tolland in the 1800s. They will learn how that child
helped their parents, which school they attended and about where they lived. On May 11 th, third
graders will participate in Tolland Day, where they will dress as their role child from the 1800s
and visit the Hicks Stearns Museum where they will see and touch artifacts from this time
period. In addition they will visit the Tolland Jail Museum, dance to colonial songs and draw
the historic houses on the green. Please keep an eye out for volunteer forms for this event.
We’ll be visiting Old Sturbridge Village on April 21st this year. It will be an excellent
chance to extend our learning of that time period. Please look out for the field trip form that
should come home this week.
***As fieldtrip/volunteer forms start to come home, please be sure you are on the approved
volunteer list, by registering on the district’s home page.
GRADE 4 - If it’s March, it must be testing season! We have been busy practicing and getting
students ready to take the SBAC tests. These are computerized tests and we have been practicing
how to access and use all of the tools and hints that will be available to students as they complete
the assessments. In reading, we have been practicing how to read passages critically, how to
develop ideas about our reading and how to use evidence from the text to support our thinking.
This should be very good preparation for the SBAC.
In fourth grade, we have finished writing our informational essays about our research animals
and are beginning a writing unit on the Literary Essay. This correlates to the work we are doing
in reading, as we will write essays to develop our thinking about texts we have read.
Fourth graders have just completed the second benchmark in math, which covered all of the
units since January. We are beginning a new unit on measurement. We will be looking at both
customary and metric units of measure, learning how to convert measures within the systems
(e.g. inches to yards, meters to centimeters.) We will be revisiting fractions as we add measures
such as 1/2 cup plus 2/3 of a cup, as well as division as we solve word problems involving units
of measure.
Students will be completing their unit of study in Weather and will be tested soon. We also will
wrap up our unit in Economics soon, so students should be studying vocabulary in preparation
for these assessments. Heading into Spring, students will learn all about soil in Science, and in
Social Studies, we will study the Connecticut State Government.
GRADE 5 –
Students in Mr. Campbell's, Mrs. Kneeland's and Mrs. Ramans’ classes recently went
snowshoeing during our last snowstorm. As you can see, they had a blast learning to appreciate
nature and a terrific winter activity. This helped them clear their minds through exercise and
resulted in more alert thinkers in the classroom.
Fifth graders are continuing to work hard as we near a much anticipated spring vacation.
The Theatre Works Company performed “Freedom Train, the Harriet Tubman Story.” The fifth
graders were a wonderful audience and completely enjoyed the show. Thank you very much to
the PTO for sponsoring this amazing experience.
The show linked up very nicely with our reading unit of studying human rights. Students have
been reading Esperanza Rising, and they have been having terrific discussions about the book
and the interesting characters they have been learning about. Students are also wrapping up
their personal narrative unit in reading with a focus on memoirs. They have been choosing a
moment in their lives to write about and teachers are quite impressed with the progress they are
making.
Math students are pushing their way through the decimal units. They are learning how to
multiply and divide decimals and are becoming very aware of how important it is to have the
numbers in the correct place value. Some classes discussed how great it would be to go
shopping for a day and have the ability to move the decimal point one place. Imagine being able
to change the price of a video game from $59.99 to $5.99. We figured out that decimal point
placement can really change the value of a number!
Scientists are wrapping up the Light unit. One thing that has been really impressive to our
students is the speed at which light travels. Learning that sunlight takes about 8 minutes to
travel 93 million miles from the Sun to the Earth was really mind blowing. They also enjoyed
learning about the difference in speed between light and sound. Real life example to show this
difference included seeing fireworks before hearing them and of course seeing a lightning flash
before hearing the thunder.
Social studies students continue to work on the colonization of the New World. Some classes
are completing some pretty awesome slideshows about the New England, Middle, and Southern
Colonies. They are using Google Slides to create presentations to help enhance their
understanding. Good job 5th graders.
Unified Arts Update for April 2017
Art ~ Health ~ Library ~ Music ~ Physical Education ~ Technology
Mrs. Bezzina - Art
Third Grade: Can you say “Repousse’”? Third graders can. They are creating symmetrically
balanced designs on a piece of heavy foil. We work on the back side to pop out the front. We
compared this example to a license plate to see how they both indent on the back and pop out on
the front.
Fourth Grade: Math and art are intertwined. We are using this poster to help us draw
ourselves with accurate proportions. The eyes are located in the middle or center of the head
although most people typically draw them higher. If the students follow this example, they will
be well balanced.
Fifth Grade: What color scheme does this weaving follow? Your child should be able to answer
“monochromatic”. Monochromatic uses the tints and shades of one color and this one is based
on green. We are learning about a variety of weaving options such as multi-color strings, beads,
checkerboard and concentric shapes to name a few. Ask your son/daughter what he/she is
making.
Mrs. Logsdon – Health/Physical Education
Third grade: We are currently working on a nutrition unit using information from both
MyPyramid and MyPlate. While maintaining focus on the nutritional basics, this unit allows us
to work on other skills as well. Many games and activities are utilized throughout the nutrition
unit also incorporating physical activity, math skills, social skills and proper game play
etiquette. The book series, Food is Categorical by Brian P. Cleary is also embedded throughout
the unit to support English and Language Arts.
Fourth grade: Fourth graders just finished reviewing hygiene. Topics included, washing,
wearing clean cloths and oral hygiene. Fourth grade students have also had the opportunity to
work in small groups to sort out foods that are good and bad for your teeth using
manipulatives. Next, we will have the opportunity to have an active health class. After learning
about germs and our natural body defenders, fourth graders will play body defender tag.
Fifth grade: – Fifth graders have been actively working hard to complete the challenges within
the health / fitness unit. Students just finished Fitness Counts, the Ultimate Fitness Teamwork
Challenge and are currently working on fitness tasks to complete all four stations of Fitness
Cards. Next, students will participate in a fitness memory match challenge in small groups.
Please remember, sneakers are required so students can safely participate.
Mrs. Hill - Library Media
*April is National Poetry Month and we are celebrating poetry all
month long in the library!
In honor of National Poetry Month, all grades will
participate in various poetry activities in the library. Students will be encouraged to stretch
their imagination and choose from many different forms of poetry. They can choose forms
and topics for their writing. Students will create with soothing, light jazz music in the
background as they write haikus, diamanté, free verse, and acrostic poems. Then pick from
colored paper, shaped sticky notes, markers, color pencils, scissors and more from the
“craft area” to create a unique poem to leave in or around the library for the whole school
to read.
Another Poetry Month activity that will be hosted by the library will be the second annual
Poem in your Pocket Day. This will take place Thursday April 27th. Hundreds of kidfriendly poems will be given out to TIS students as they walk into school that day. Students
will be encouraged to keep, trade, or share their poems with their classmates. Students are
free to stop by the library throughout the day and pick a poem for their pocket. Fifth grade
classes that have library on Poem in your Pocket Day will make origami pockets and then
put their poems into them to carry home!
Ms. Baker - Music/Chorus
Grade 3 general music: The third grade students have been learning about the treble clef staff
using various station activities. It has been a lot of fun. They will continue to learn new folk
songs and dances which they will be performing on Tolland Green Day. We will be learning
many new songs on the recorders too.
Music Times Three concert will be Thursday, March 30th at
7:00 pm in the TIS Gymnasium. Students need to arrive to room 136 by 6:40. Please have
the children dress their best.
Grade 4 general music: The fourth graders will be continuing their studies of the music and
geography of Asia. They have also been learning about the treble clef staff using various station
activities. All students are encourage to continue working on their recorder karate music.
Grade 5 general music: The fifth graders are very excited to be learning the ukuleles. They have
been learning to play chords and sing songs using the ukulele like: Happy birthday, This Land is
Your Land , and Don’t Worry Be Happy. Next, they will be choosing a song to learn on the
ukulele and sing for the class.
Grade 5 Chorus: OUR SPRING CONCERT IS: Wednesday, April 5 at 7:00pm, in the TIS all
purpose room.

Mrs. Kirk - Technology Integration
Students have been and will continue to prepare for the SBAC (Smarter Balanced Assessment
Consortium) test. While this test provides information on student progress, it also affords
students the opportunity to continue to work and learn using digital media. Students must learn
how and when to access tools, as well as how to integrate paper and pencil resources to solve
problems and take notes in order to process information presented on the computer screen. These
21st Century skills help prepare students for College and Career choices, while learning to work
with technology to support, enhance, and enrich the academic process.

TIS MILEAGE CLUB
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
FOR THE SPRING SESSION!
Last year’s Mileage Club was a fun, successful program! We need your help to
keep their feet moving! Mileage Club provides an opportunity for 3rd-5th Grade
students to run or walk outside during recess. As students accumulate mileage,
they can earn toe tokens, carabiners, and even trophies. It’s great exercise too!
We are in need of parent volunteers to encourage the kids and help track their
mileage. It’s also a great way to see your child and their friends at school.
Their smiles are well worth it.
The Mileage Club typically goes from September to mid November and then from
mid April thru June. The recess schedule has remained the same from last year.
We are looking for people that are willing to volunteer for a recess slot (or more)
for one day a week. Younger siblings are welcome.
If you are interested in volunteering, please fill out the form below and return it
to your child’s teacher as soon as possible. Then we will contact you regarding
a start date.
If you have any questions, call Cecilia Klember at 860-729-0249 or email at
[email protected].
PLEASE FILL OUT THE SLIP ON THE NEXT PAGE AND RETURN IT TO THE SCHOOL
WE CAN’T DO IT WITHOUT YOU!

Dear Parent,
The grade 5 chorus students and I are planning on putting together a
PowerPoint presentation for our spring concert April 5, and we need your
help. The students would like to use pictures of people that are special to
them for this presentation. These pictures may or may not include your child.
That decision is entirely up to you. This presentation will be shown at the
fifth grade spring chorus concert and shared with the audience that evening.
We may also share it at one of our PBIS School –wide assemblies.
Please send digital photos only to my school email.
[email protected]
I have discussed this integration of technology and
our choral performance with Mrs. Kirk, and she gave us her full support.
Students are encouraged to send the pictures themselves via their google
email accounts. Due to some incompatibilities with our school and iPhone/
iPad it is best to send the photos through the email.
Below is the permission slip for the students to send in pictures and
participate in the email activity. Remember it is up to you if your child is
included in the pictures. The pictures will greatly add to the meaning of one
of our songs.
Sincerely,
Ms. Judith Baker
